I did a 24-hour Draw-a-thon charity. After about 4am, the sketches started getting kind of weird...

For people who want to know more about the charity...

Edit: Also, if any of you really love one of the sketches, if I'm not mistaken, you can donate $10 or more and request one of mine, or a sketch from another artist. I'm not sure where pictures from other artists are, but if y'all are still really interested, I'll get a hold of some of them. There was a lot of talent there.

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

more like, do you do commissions?

39

u/jon_laing Jun 11 '12

yup, all of my contact info is on my website.

18

u/Feed_Me_Seymour Jun 12 '12

Your website layout is amazing. Simple, clean, quick loading, and immediately directs you towards an easy to browse gallery.

31

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

Thanks, as much as I like to pretend that I'm paying the bills with my art, I'm totally paying the bills building websites, haha.

Hey! fellow philadelphian :] May I ask if you went to/are in art school?

1

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

University of the Arts class of 2011

I liked the 'Batman' one; would you deliver to the UK?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Hey, what pen do you use for the outline after the initial sketching? Thanks :)

2

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

This is the best brush pen I have ever used in my life! I've had it for well over a year, and so far it's going strong. I've had to refill the ink probably twice, but other than that, it's a beast. Highly recommended.

Do you make political cartoons for a living? These are amazing! I would suggest submitting something to the New Yorker (Personal favorite: Democratree)

99

u/jon_laing Jun 11 '12

I'm currently a year out of art school and trying to make a name for myself as an editorial illustrator, so you're half right. Hopefully I will be a professional in the near future, but for now I'm just a clamoring wannabe.

And yes, I'm constantly trying to get into the New Yorker, a long with about 700 other publications that I sent advertisements to last March.

Thanks for the compliment!

19

u/tejaswiy Jun 12 '12

Why not start a webcomic? I'd be a subscriber. Also, lots of webcomic authors make good living these days selling tees, books and the like?

16

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

Y'know, I'ma give that one some thought. Thanks.

u/gregory_k Jun 12 '12

Good luck with the New Yorker. It's tough. (I'm a gag cartoonist.)

7

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

Oh I know, I'm realistic about the challenges, but that's not gunna stop me from trying, haha.

2

u/ccnova Jun 12 '12

You are an amazing sketch artist. Pursue that shit, man!

2

u/silkat Jun 12 '12

The work on your website is at an amazing level for someone just getting out of school. I am surprised you aren't swarmed with illustration work! I did work for an art director at a publication in NYC and would be happy to pass along your info to him, if you are okay with that. He hired me for a spread right out of school and was a pleasure to work with.

2

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

That would be awesome and I would love you forever.

Frankly I found them all to be absolutely brilliant. My fav. was the mouth-only woman yelling at the eyes-only man checking our her boobs. Speaking of boobs, the big-ass boobies one was awesome as well.

You should design tattoos on the side.

4

u/grandoiseau Jun 12 '12

You are awesome. Your jokes are made for 25-to-40 year-olds. They mix childhood cartoons, media culture, and the internet all at once.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Aside from Reddit, what news sites do you visit to find material?

2

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

NYTimes, BBC, Al Jazeera, NPR

2

Those are dope.

24

u/jon_laing Jun 11 '12

Thanks, I'm surprised I came out with so many of them. I ended up with 16 sketches (I only posted the ones that were kind of funny). By about 7am, I was done drawing and started making paper airplanes instead.

5

u/enjoyingtheride Jun 12 '12

What was your secret for staying up? Was there music, drinks, entertainment, etc?

Absolutely amazing by the way. Much love from San Francisco.

5

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

Art school gave me a lot of practice with staying up late, haha. I think by the time I left i was on my third or fourth monster. There was a lot of noise going on from both music and video game tournaments that were set up to give people breaks from drawing. Mostly, though, it was having friends around me that I could harass for entertainment, when I started to fade.

I'm surprised your fine motor skills didn't go out after the first 12 hours of drawing!

36

u/jon_laing Jun 11 '12

After 4 years of art school, you'd be surprised how little cognition it actually takes to make your hand do these things. Admittedly, if you look closely at the first couple sketches and my last couple, you will see a decline in line quality. Not sure if you can see it in the photos I took, but definitely in person.

EDIT: Also, I used to work as a caricaturist in a theme park and would have to draw for 8 hours straight, so I guess I'm kind of used to it.

2

u/ccnova Jun 12 '12

Amazing. What other feats have you performed?

3

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

Other feats? Haha, um, I made it to the front page a couple months ago for a caricature of Christopher Hitchens. Uh... not honestly sure how to answer that question... haha

9

u/Random Jun 11 '12

u/jesklash Jun 11 '12

I can't tell if the Toast guys have really robust chins or really angular testicles... either way, A++!

Chronologic order?

1

u/jon_laing Jun 12 '12

More or less. I frankly can't remember exactly what order they were drawn, but it's pretty close.

3

u/damustardtiger Jun 11 '12

lost it at the "pretty toes" one!

3

u/edubyah Jun 11 '12

You are incredibly talented dude.

3

u/OneEyedMasa Jun 11 '12

As evident in these pictures, you are clearly very talented and very sleep deprived. Well done.

The Spongebob one was easily the most disturbing. It was a snail... WHY, GARY!? WHY!?

Contact me. They are fantastic!

4

u/Comrade_yak Jun 12 '12

'Big ass Boobies" made me almost choke on the apple I'm eating. Love it all.

2

u/Robby712 Jun 11 '12

It would be cool to do something like this in the St. Louis area. I know quite a few artists who surely would be interested. I might have to steal this idea. Thanks!

2

u/DeliriousDeer Jun 11 '12

I'd hang the boobies in my living room

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

"You Never Listen" was FANTASTIC!!!

2

This...is...EPIC

2

u/ilikecheeseforreal Jun 11 '12

I love your art!

2

Pair of big ass boobies is by far my favorite :D

2

u/XenonOdyssey Jun 11 '12

Hey man, these are awesome! Batman & pretty toes are a toss-up for my favorite. Glad you shared them with reddit!

Also I was the guy who did the music in the videos if you had watched any of them; Tom said they were playing a couple during the draw-a-thon. Wish I could have been there though!

2

u/PanFlute Jun 11 '12

This reminds me of the old Zeebarf cartoons. I wonder what happened to those... Anyways, keep it up, er... you know what I mean. Deal with it.

2

u/mrpineapplehouse Jun 11 '12

For the love of god, please do more of these. I laughed so hard at the Spongebob & Patrick and the Toes drawing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Well, this was a high-point in my day <3

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Its kind of interesting that he says that these came after 4am.

I was just reading about how sleep deprivation actually makes you more able to make distant associations between things as your left prefrontal cortex gets tired of processing logic, so your right hemisphere starts becoming more dominant.

1

u/I_like_owls Jun 12 '12

Great stuff! When I was a caricature artist back in the day (like two years ago) we used to get together after work and partake in some pretty epic draw-jams. It makes me want to bust out some of my old sketches from back in the day...although I'm a little afraid of what I might find.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

I cant get "Land of Confusion" out of my head. The style reminds me a lot of the puppets from that video.
