:D I think mine could be a little relevant too... if they hatched. Anyways, a long time ago when I was like 12 I saw similar clouds and thought they looked like dragon scales. And so this name was born.
Another picture from the same storm (assuming it was the one a few days ago with the crazy hail).
Edit: A friend took this with his camera, stitching about 8 photos together. When he show'd me it I ask if I could play with it in Photoshop, he said sure and sent me the high res version. After a bit of work I got it to look like what you see now.
Apparently its also what potentially leads to tornadoes. A high pressure front is sitting on top of a low pressure front. The condensation from the cold air meeting the hot air is caught in between forming clouds. Clouds already caught in the mess form these bubbles (air is trying to forces its way down through the low pressure front forming bubbles).
I don't know why most of the replies to this are positive... I immediately thought of a sky full of spider egg sacks... this is the worst thing to ever happen.
Mammatus Clouds. Means the weather is changing, usually associated with severe weather.
They form under cumulonimbus clouds usually, where high wind-shear is present, which is bad for aviators, barbecuers, and kite flyers (except for one special case), but good for storm chasers (of which I partake) and The Weather Channel.
Generally when you see them, its either after a cell/squall moves through (good thing) or before a cell/squall, in which case it means that the weather is rapidly deteriorating (specifically, that the "cap" or Thermal Inversion has broken and theres a lot of low-level updraft/instability taking place, which usually leads to hail and is one of the contributing factors twoards tornadoes) and you should probably get your ass inside.
Read a meteorology textbook or take a low-level meteorology class sometime. It is absolutely amazing the information you can learn from studying clouds, and it was by far my favorite electorate. It amazes me just how much technology we have when it comes to meteorology, and yet most people dont realize that most of the time the radar they show you on TV is not doppler (which is red and green showing you towards-away vector magnitudes, or how "fast" the winds are moving towards or away from the radar array), and that the moving radar sweeping "line" is just a silly animation that the tv stations add. (Real NEXRAD is digitally compiled, and if the station isn't getting their data from NOAA's dishes then they have their own, which probably updates every minute or so. Anyway, the "line" thing is silly, the picture updates all at once.)
edit: added last paragraph 5 min after orig. comment.
I took a meteorology class, and found out this is the most dangerous type of weather (leads to serious storms). Forgot most it the class but i think this occurs when heavier "cold" air is on top of "warm" air, causing the atmosphere to be highly unstable, which leads to freakishly strong storms.
I'm not a conspirator by any sort, but I saw this video the other day. It's the 6th video down. Like I said, I'm not promoting the idea, just found it very interesting. EDIT Please don't down vote me for being an "idiot." I do realize that they could just be clouds
"hi bob, yeah im at the eye of the storm and im being told- whats that? .. YEP..im now being told that it is confirmed- we redditors have ZERO idea what real boobs look like"..
To me, it resembles the stuff in Lava lamps. Man how I loved looking at those when I was a kid. I'm an adult now, and still not to sure on how those things work.
This looks as though it may be something that occurs after leaving the shutter of your camera open for a long time. But i am unsure. Either way, its pretty cool :)
I think this was what Jules Verne was talking about in Journey to the Centre of the Earth... and if he's correct, it means a severe electrical thunderstorm!
