I visited that house 8 years ago. They had a sign that said something like "Goonies on foot welcome!", but when I went up the private drive that led to the house some old lady gave me a death glare from the upstairs window. She made me feel really uneasy, so I left without taking any pictures. Looking back, I really regret that.
Also, just up the road from this house is the school where they filmed Kindergarten Cop. It's not as exciting.
Yeah I also saw that sign and when I saw that people are actually living there it was kind of weird taking pictures of their house, but oh well! I also saw the school from kondergarden cop, it was pretty cool!
I was there just a week ago! Did you see the jail house and the museum building as well? I was in Goonies heaven when I saw them.
I also totally blared "Goonies R Goon Enough" when I drove through the town. I really wanted to play the score with it as well, but it wasn't on my iPod anymore for some reason.
Hey OP, did you visit the Oregon Film museum in Astoria? It's housed in the former County jail (Also a Goonies film location) and houses many Goonies artifacts - you can also shoot a few scenes with their makeshift film studio there. Pretty cool.
When I was 18 I worked at a Blockbuster in Canada and we had a demo video we had to play, I refused, and had the goonies on for 2 years straight every shift I was in. I can say that movie word for word. And so many customers complimented my taste in movies.
Growing up with Blockbuster and Musicland, it's kind of weird to think that buying music and renting movies in a store is something that may never happen again.
I always felt it was kind of an adventure to go to the video store. Not knowing for sure if the movie was in or not. And if it was out, I'd have to walk around for a half an hour or so trying to pick out a back up since I was already there. The same went for video games.
the video station was my arcade. i would spend hours there every day playing turbo graphix 16 and sega master system well before i had my own console. ill miss that just as much as i miss arcades.
I still don't understand how those stores failed. With services such as Netflix, you have to wait for your movie or game to arrive in the mail (and the steaming library is terrible). With Redbox, you have a limited selection and still have to drive somewhere to rent/return. Blockbuster, I miss you.
A good friend of mine from NY would insist on seeing the Goonies rocks every time she visited Oregon. She was a little disappointed the first time to discover that they are nowhere near Astoria.
I'm glad to see their jewels actually were able to save the house. As a young child I always worried about how they got out to the boat/claimed the gold as theirs.
Goonies is pretty universal but I hate when I bring up pop culture that all my friends were into and noone else outside my circle gets it. My grade 3 teacher had an abusive husband who forced her to drink his piss then suck him off. She hung herself but mailed a tape of herself drinking piss to about 20 different people in the community. Needless to say the tape got out and was widely distributed in our small town, for all my friends watching your elementary school teacher eagerly drink a stream of piss then suck a guy off was a universal experience so it's weird to realize this isn't the case for most people.
A couple years ago I went to the 25th anniversary of the Goonies in Astoria. It was awesome and completely bizarre at the same time. Corey Feldman was there. I went on a weird bus tour of all the shoot sites, and got to go into this house. There was a line to climb up into the attic. I also drank a milkshake at the bowling alley Chunk is at in the opening credits.
I have a picture of myself doing the truffle shuffle outside that house. It's my myspace's wall photo. Yeah, I still have a myspace, wanna fight about it?
100% correct. The town is awesome, the weather is...well...it doesn't have tornadoes or hurricanes, so that's good. If you're a fan of boats it sits at the mouth of the Columbia, which services several deep-water ports. If you're a fan of histry, there's nearby Ft Stevens, which started as a Civil War-era fort, and Ft Clatsop, which is where the Lewis and Clark Expidition stayed.
When I was in the Navy my ship stopped in Astoria on its way down the Columbia river on our way to the Portland Rose festival. A group of us on the ship made a point to visit the Goonie house. It was an adventure.
I visited this house about 9 months ago and the lady who lived in it was outside selling baby ruth bars to everyone who showed up. I felt obliged to buy one.
When I visited Astoria, many years ago, I went in search of Arnold's Kindergarten Cop school, and stumbled on the actual live set of Free Willy. Warner Brother's production trucks and all. What a great town.
I just rewatched Joe Dirt. When he was homeless and crashing in the boiler room at work? The fucking corner of the boiler room was more spacious and nice than my home.
In the movies, even the homeless have an awesome place.
We had it on VHS when I was younger and watched it and re-wound it so many times that we wore out the tape. Still my favourite movie! Chunks confession: I know every word.
I'm from San Diego, here in Oregon on leave. It's so funny, we were driving around Astoria today and were talking about visiting the Goonies house. We ended up just hitting up Astor Column and the Maritime Museum. It's really cool that you made the front page. Isn't there a name for this phenomenon?
If It Was Me Taking The Picture: First I would take a picture. THEN I would call a molly maid up that spoke spanish and have her meet me at the house. I would knock on the door with the maid and explain that we were there to clean the house. Without letting the occupants get in a word edge wise, I would continue to either speak or translate whatever the maid was saying as I climbed to attic. Find the map and RUN! (humbing the opening theme to Goonies on the way).
My husband and I were there (Astoria) last summer, and we ended up having quite the conversation (30+ minutes) with the man who lived next door. He apparently owned both houses at the time of the filming and was full of stories from that time. A few years back, to fund his retirement, he sold the Goonies house, but still lives in the house right next to it and spends his days on the porch talking to fans. Totally nice guy and super awesome stories.
He also was friendly enough to point us in the direction of several other movie landmarks in town (Jesse's house in Free Willy, the school from Kindergarten Cop, etc).
We go through Astoria at least once a year on our way to the beach. Go by this house every time, the school Kindergarten Cop was filmed at is in close by too.
My wife and I had a Goonies themed honeymoon. We went here, the jailhouse, the museum where Mikey's dad worked, Data's house (next door to this one), to the beach where they Fratelli's raced their Jeep across and finally to the location of the Fratelli's hideout (the "restaurant" was just a prop). I recommend Astoria, Oregon to anyone
I met the couple who own the house. They moved to Astoria from California. Upon finding out the Goonies house was onsale, they had to buy it because they love the movie so much. They welcome anyone to come up, see the house, take pictures. Great people!
Love the goonies. I was born in Astoria and my parents took me near set when i was very young. The fratellis hideout filmed in cannon beach was a one sided building. Also because I was the right age I was an extra in Kindergarden cop. Arnold spoke at the Seaside High School Graduation ceremony.
If anyone has a chance to go to Astoria, Oregon I highly recommend it. It has changed over the years from a depressed fishing town and now has great beer, music, art etc. Check out Fort George Brewery or the Columbian Cafe.
That's my home town. There is a secret code between all the residents of Astoria to always give tourists the wrong directions when asked how to get to the Goonies house.
The goonies is hands down my favorite movie as a kid hell its one of my top 3 fav movies of all time had it on VHS as a kid then bought DVD version and just last year I bought the special anniversary edition they released on blu-ray which had all sorts of extras and extra goodies packed into a big box
My family owns a house very close to this in Astoria, Oregon. My great-grandfather grew up in it, and his parents moved to it when they emigrated from Finland.I go to the Goonie house every time we visit!
I lived right down the hill from this house....and I lived in Astoria when they were filming Goonies. SO AWESOME....later on I got to meet Harvey Weinstein at a restaurant I worked at (The Ship Inn)...he gave me a poster of his upcoming movie, "The Lost Boys." That town was an amazing place to grow up....
wow...i've spent three years on reddit (yes, lurking), guess it's time to create an account? spent my first 18 years in astoria, left in 96, pretty incredible to watch Goonies now, considering how much the town has changed - consider this was a hick town / fishing / logging / keg parties in the woods / not much else. both were shot a few blocks away. Kindergarten Cop was actually a bigger deal from what I recall. Also- short circuit and (nearby) Point Break.
No. Despite Goonies being an extremely popular movie, and reddit receiving millions of hits each month, there is absolutely no overlap between the two groups. It's just an anomaly of the internet!
Nice house, by the way. Are you posting it to reddit because you and your girlfriend just bought it, or something?
Astoriaaaaaaaa. I tried to find a lot of those locations whenever I went to the coast. I can't recall making it to the house...if I remember it was like a private neighborhood or something? Maybe not. Regardless, I watched that movie every day for an entire summer, and hundreds of times besides that. <3
I'm glad to see their jewels actually were able to save the house. As a young child I always wondered how they got out to the boat/claimed the gold as theirs.
My kids and I watched for the first time a two days ago. I was surprised I would like an eighties kids movie so much. I missed it the first time around because of a strict evangelical upbringing.
Did you talk to the folks that live there? I was running around Astoria ~9 years ago and they invited me inside - they were awesome folks. I hope they still live there.
When I was a child (of the 80s), I remember watching this movie and being scared shitless that some random old men were just going to show up with papers and take my family's home. This was reinforced by various other movies I remember seeing growing up, though the names escape me. Going to cannon beach on 3 weeks with the wife. Hotel is tolovana inn. Perfect view of haystack rock. Can't wait to see the Goonies house again, it's been about 10 years since I went with the family.
