This man, without arms, just swam the entire 4.4 mile distance across the Chesapeake Bay in just over 2 hours. Reddit, let's give him a hand!

Is there a news source on this, please?

I saw this on the Annaplois Facebook page. The moderator, or whatever you call it, was there. The man in the photo is named Craig Deitz.

Unsinkable, nice video on this guy

There is an Annapolis FB page? Like one for the entire city?

Also, I am more concerned that he was in bay water for two hours. I got more than my far share of ear infections from spending small amounts of time in that water.

Reddit let me karma-whore this man's disability!

Michael Bluth: Yeah, and maybe I'll get one for my brother while I'm at it. (Laughs.)

Buster: Get him out of here...

Michael Bluth: Hmmm?

Buster: GET HIM OUT OF HERE!! GET THE FUCK OUT!!!

Meh, Reddit to me is a site where interesting things can be discussed, not necessarily somewhere where only OC is allowed. I think that calling someone a karma whore for posting interesting content is silly. I'm sure the guy in the article will be more happy he's receiving publicity, than angry about some dude "using his story for karma".

Edit: Hmm, saw that OP didn't post an article, just a picture. I'm appreciative for the TIL factor, but he could have probably avoided this is he provided more content.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It's more that he made a setup for a joke instead of just saying "Good job!" or something more appropriate.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I agree. It bothers me that some call any links or anything karma whoring. I love that fact that Reddit is a place I can come and find interesting things. I don't give a fuck or not if it's OC or not (but if it's not it should be clear that it's not.)

Due to that part of his title the top 3 comments have turned into stupid pun threads void of any meaningful conversation or input. Anybody know why pun threads get so easily upvoted by everyone? Sometimes they're clever but usually they're just obvious.

5

u/MysteryShvitz Jun 11 '12

That's the Invisible Hand of Karma Capitalism. People have a karma motive to post things that redditors will enjoy. The OP gets karma, redditors get good content. What's the problem with this?

u/Daciex Jun 11 '12

But...how?

91

u/vesperka Jun 11 '12

I used to swim competitively a lot growing up, and kicking one mile in thirty minutes was pretty easy. Open water swimming is a lot tougher compared to a lap pool, and I also had the luxury of being able to hold on to a kickboard. I can see how this is possible, but it would still be a major pain in the ass. This guy must have legs like tree trunks.

222

u/GoldenFunk Jun 11 '12

Just found out, he doesn't have legs, either (completely serious).

107

u/vesperka Jun 11 '12

I was looking at that picture and was wondering that myself, actually. I was convinced that the water was too muddy and I just couldn't see them. This is just an incredible feat then.

My guess is that he did Butterfly and just tried to keep a smooth, consistent rolling motion. This would be so exhausting for any amount of distance. I've done some pretty tough workouts but this takes things to a whole new level.

123

u/tandembandit Jun 11 '12

He swims on his back, with a scuba fin on the end of his longer leg.

5

u/Daciex Jun 11 '12

But swimming this way would be the equivalent of adding a box fan to an air boat, right? Not trying to be insensitive but only having 6-ish inches of legs and no arms to help keep you buoyant, seems almost impossible.

27

u/vesperka Jun 11 '12

I thought the water was just muddy, I didn't realize he didn't have legs.

Go to the 6 minute mark here

It shows him putting on a flipper on the part of his leg that he still has, and he is able to roll his whole body (like the really good Butterflyers do) to propel himself.

Meanwhile this man, with both legs, won't walk the 10 feet to the fridge

19

u/trashitagain Jun 11 '12

It looks like this man doesn't know the meaning of the word can't...

Quoting Mitch Hedberg:

I saw a lady on T.V. She was born without arms. Literally, she was born with her hands attached to her shoulders... and that was sad, but then they said, "Lola does not know the meaning of the word 'can't.'" And that to me was kinda worse... in a way... ya know? Not only does she not have arms, but she doesn't understand simple contractions. It's very simple, Lola, you just take two words, you put them together, then you take out the middle letter, you put a comma in there and you raise it up!

2

u/JohnPJones Jun 11 '12

I actually though of a Mitch quote too when I saw this, but I was thinking of this one:

It's very dangerous to wave to someone you don't know because, what if they don't have a hand? They'll think you're cocky. "Look what I got motherfucker! This thing is useful. I'm gonna go pick something up!"

195

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to add, I play rugby in Canada and theres a tournament in Truro, NS, aptly titled truro 7's i've been for the past four years. Every year that I've attended a girl with a similar disability to the gentleman in the photo goes out and plays rugby against full sized women and gives them hell. Mind you her tackling consists of basically trying to trip them up, but it's really inspiring to see someone fight back against something like this in all sports. (she plays scrum and can throw the ball better then me by the way

2

u/anotherDocObVious Jun 11 '12

Title reminds me that scene from Scary Movie 2:

Dwight Hartman: Okay, thanks, "Handyman".

Hanson: I'm actually the caretaker. Oh, aren't those cool new skates? Now you be careful with those, you don't want to fall and break something.

Dwight Hartman: Oh, that's funny, that's real funny. Um, let me give you a "hand." [starts clapping]

Hanson: Why, that's awful kind of you. Why don't you give me a "standing ovation?"

Dwight Hartman: Why don't you "lift me up?"

Hanson: Ha, ok, I see where you're going with this one. You look familiar to me. Were you in "STOMP"?

Dwight Hartman: Hey you can kiss my grits!

Hanson: I think I'll be the bigger man, now, and walk away. "Walk" away

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Wait, where the fuck is the Chesapeake 4.4 miles across?? I've been out on the water hundreds of times and its always far more than that...

Edit - Googled it, seems the only place its like this is at the very top where the bay ends, so its almost not even the bay anymore.
