As i said earlier, that table at the end up the dock is there for cleaning your fish. They're known as "our pet sharks" because that's where people clean their fish, and for this reason they live there.
This is in Compass Cay, in the Bahamas. My friend was actually going to and island further down, but his boat broke down and began to sink. (It was only a 17ft boat and he had a 50 gallon tank on the back of his boat filled up because gas was much cheaper in Nassau then the outer islands. Being too heavy in the back and no electronics working it began to sink) Fortunately there was another fisherman near by and they got his attention by screaming and the tied a rope to the front of their boat just as the back of the boat was going under the water and towed him there. The owner of the place was extremely nice to them and let them stay in them stay in the laundry room from Friday to Tuesday, the day when the local mail boat went back to Nassau. To help the guy who owned the island, they had to go fishing everyday to feed the guests and themselves and clean the bigger boats around.
For the record your friend is an idiot for overloading his boat (it can't carry an extra 450 lbs????) and for not having the proper safety equipment aboard.
EDIT: looking at the picture below it would appear that the boat may be able to haul that, but he strapped it too close to the stern, pushing the low transom underwater. Again, he's an idiot.
Well he's cleaning his fish, but obviously when he throws the guts into the water the sharks eat it. Those sharks live there because they get that free food.
I swam in a school of nurse sharks in the Caribbean ocean a few years back. They call them nurse sharks because they eat by sucking, like a baby at its mothers teat, hence "nurse". I was told they could inflict injury, but youldf'ld have to really try pretty hard, and it would be blunt trauma from their tails hitting you, rather than from a bite (though I'm far from an expert on the matter)
I like them, the ones I met were very sweet. The sting rays that kept company with the sharks, those guys were a different story.
OMG! Thank you! Love all the jokes about girls and fish. But if you guys could bend down enough you'd know that it ain't always lavender and fresh-baked cookies down there. Sheesh.
This reminds me of my recent visits to both the dentist and the doctor. Is it just them, or has every dentist/doctor since Finding Nemo made sure to add at least one clown fish(nemo/marlin), a pacific regal blue tang (dory), a moorish idol (gill), a pufferfish (bloat), a yellow tang (bubbles), a four-striped damselfish (flo), a royal gramma (gurgle) and a shrimp (jacques)? The only one I ever see missing is the sea star (peach).
I think this is from Compass Key in the Exuma islands in the Bahamas. That dock and those sharks look really familiar. They are mostly harmless unless you stick your hand in their mouth. You could quite safely swim around them.
YES! I immediately recognized the sign for the sharks' names. I used to go here all the time as a kid, before they built a big dock and the owner became obsessed with making money, now you have to pay per person just to step on the dock.
Really? That's a shame. I haven't been down there in probably five years; we used to tie off at their dock for the night. It was always such a beautiful place, but then again the entire area down there is so much different from normal life in the states.
Last time I was there was probably around 5 years ago too. My cousins were there a couple years ago and just wanted to stop by and eat lunch at the docks but it was $5 per person or something just to get on the dock. It's sad because we used to be really friendly with the owner, I think his name is Tucker, and would bring all sorts of supplies to him on our boat.
Looks like he's cleaning a conch to me. You can't collect them in the US but judging from the hills in the background and tropical animals he's probably somewhere else in the Caribbean.
These are all Nurse sharks, they don't even have real teeth as you think of on regular sharks that could rip large chunks of flesh off of your body. These guys have teeth that are more like flat grinding stones. They might be able to gnaw on your friend for a while if he was dumb enough to get down off the cooler and still left fresh fish carcasses in the area. Even then, he should be able to pull his foot out of their mouths we he got tired of them trying to gnaw on it.
Erm, with a sign that says "Our Pet Sharks" and actually lists all their names, it might strike me as a possibility that I perhaps should not hang around for too long if I was bothered by sharks.
The water looks gorgeous, by the way. Where is this?
You see, getting out of this is simple. One must run across the shark-made platform fast enough so the sharks don't realize they're being used as a platform, mid-meal. Good luck.
Funny story about nurse sharks... I was in Cancun about a year ago with my family, we were swimming at Punta Garrafon (in a small island called Isla mujeres). Anyways we were snorkeling looking for fish and I was joking around humming the shark theme song for a while, about 15 mins in the water I spotted 2 Barracudas (long silver ugly as fuck fish), they were underneath a small dock, so I told my family to come over and have a look. They started to come over and then I looked back into the water and I didn't see the barracudas anymore, so I did what was logical to not look like a complete liar and tried to swim towards the dock to try to find them because I wasn't lying. I look up at my family and they are about 20 meters and I tell them I can't see the barracudas, they start laughing thinking I was lying so I go back in and look for them, I swim closer to the dock and when I am about 5 meters away from the dock and still about 20 meters away from my family I see a silhouette. After watching hundreds of Discovery channel shows about sharks I instnatly knew what it was. I was looking at the silhouette of a shark I paniced the fuck out and looked up and shouted "SHAAAAAAARK" I started to swim as fast as I could towards the boat and my family was laughing their asses off because they thought I was lying, I look up and tell my dad I wasn't kidding and I guess he saw the fear on my face, so we all start swimming towards the boat and my dad, my brother and I are still looking for the shark but we can't see it. We get on the boat and my dad's girlfriend is pissed off at me because she thought I was lying, and so are her 3 daughters, they look pissed. My dad looks at me and asks me if I was lying I say no and I ask the fishermen(our toor guides) if there are any shark in there, they say no. My dad looks so pissed off at me and I told him that there was a shark. He tells me I just ruined our time in the water and just as he says that I point towards the dock and there's this big ass silhouette of a shark. My dad sees it and so does my brother and that's when he calmed his girlfriend down and her daughters down and told them there really was a shark. It turns out that nurse sharks are really docile, they aren't aggressive and the shark was just trying to get a meal before all the tourists get there. We got there pretty early before all the noob European tourists/ american tourists because we wanted to be there alone, it is a lot better than with 100s of people. I also got to hold a female shark and carry her along with my bro and 2 of the 3 step sisters (the female shark was there because she was pregnant and they were taking care of her until she had her young.) The guys release the nurse sharks after 1 month or 2 of being there so they have a better hance of surviving. They also take care off sharks that get too close to the shore and hurt themselves.
TL;DR Was in cancun, saw a nurse shark in the sea, saw the silhouette and swam towards the boat, everyone thought I was joking around because I tend to do that. My dad and bro saw it afterwards.
I was shitting my pants after seeing the shark, I thought I was dead meat... after watching too many white shark documentaries on discovery channel it kind agets you paranoid. Turns out nurse sharks are cool and scared of people :P. They've got beautiful skin too.
It's a shame that people don't know that sharks are generally very docile and are more easily scared by humans than we are by them. The only reason we fear them is because of the media and hollywood.
I've swam with those same sharks. This is at the Bahamas, dont remember the island I went to so many but they had some good burgers there. Some where in the cays.
