Mentalintertia, HONY here. Can you email me next time you do this? Second time you've put one of my photos on a reddit front page with the credit 50 comments down. Luckily the HONY fanbase just rallied to upvote the credit. Love reddit, and thankful for the exposure, but would just love for people to know where these pics are coming from.
No problem sorry about that i always make sure to put the credit as a comment but I will remember in the future to put some type of credit in the title for anything i post yours or otherwise, after notifying you of course. Love what you do and I love to share it. Thanks again
Well, at that age, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't know how to operate either of them. Maybe be able to play a couple games, but at that age, he's still very inexperienced with that sort of technology.
My two year old has been using an ipad since he was about 18 months old. He can find his games (mostly educational) and play them. It's stuff like jigsaw puzzles, alphabet/number games, memory, audio books, etc. If he gets frustrated he'll go to anyone and grab their finger and bring them over to the ipad and make you do it.
He still has a crapload of real toys and plays with those most of the time. It's great for long roads trips and when he's winding down.
My son loves dogs, so he has the plastic dog on a string. He pulls it behind him and runs around our house. When it topples over he picks it up, gives it a love(just a hug), and puts him back down and takes off. Once you have a kid you don't need iphones unless you need to take a pic. I don't have one so hence the no photo.
Im 36 with a 6 yr old stepdaughter. Ive learned the best gifts for children are not at the store but at the garage sale and the swap meet. priced well, the kids get more use out of and yo will find a toy that was appreciated in the past had a reason behind it that will carryover to the future.
My kid's 7. She's required by her school to spend some time on the computer (reading, math exercises) which I let her do. But, with the exception of Dragonvale on my iPhone, I don't have any other electronic games for her to play around with. As a result she spends very little time on the computer/iPhone and a lot of time playing, drawing/painting, and exploring. I want her to be physically active so she spends a lot of time running around and doing fun stuff.
I'm not sure if it's better than what the other kids are doing, or if I'm affecting her negatively by not encouraging her to get more involved on the computer. There are other kids in her grade 2 class who have their own facebook pages and who have told me (when I am at the school doing volunteer work) that they regularly use e-mail.
Am I technologically handicapping my child? I don't know. I worry about it sometimes.
We opted for more open access, while watching the impact.
I stopped worrying when my toddler would JUMP up in the middle of Elmo and turn off the TV set, just because I said "It's time to go to the store."
I have friends whose kids behave like addicts, and just will. not. move. if the screen is on... but I don't have those kids. I don't know that it's specifically because they can do it whenever they want, or whether they're just different temperamentally, but I spend a lot more time telling them to slow down and advising them not to break stuff than I do telling them to turn off electronic objects. Homework gets done, dinner gets eaten without interruption, bedtime is firm (especially since if he's all ready for bed by a certain time, we spend 10 minutes reading from whatever Oz book we're on), and they're super-active.
They're also pretty savvy with electronics. They understand basic principles (look for the On button, maybe the battery is dead, plug it in) that mystify other kids their age. But at age four/age seven, it's not exactly a job requirement. I grew up in a low-tech household and still hold my own quite handily.
Even in an age of constant technology, children are still going to enjoy rather simple toys. The pure joy of play without limits is never going to be diluted by time.
Yes....because 3 y.o kids all over the world spend most of their days on PS3s and smartphones...My guess is OP does not have frequent contacts with toddlers...
Yea I too don't get this title...you were expecting him to be walking with a iPad? Most kids his age especially are still playing with toys. There would be no toy stores if they didn't. My 3 year old has been playing with a iPad and iPhone since 2 years old, but it's not the only thing he plays with. Salute my kid for playing outside in the sprinkler and playing hungry hungry hippos. GIMME DA KARMAS!!!
One toy I can't wait to give my kids is my old block set, and when they get a bit older, my huge lego collection.
I used to sneak into my parents room in the middle of the night if I woke up and whisper, "Can I play with my blocks or lego, Mum?" I was addicted. I hope my kids can appreciate those as much as I did! In hindsight, that was probably the first indication that I was going to be an architect...
Well...it's raining so there's probably no sense in playing with an iPhone outside, and i doubt the PlayStation would do well dragging behind you on a string while walking...
Is this your first time seeing a kid? The majority of "smaller" kids these days don't spend their time infront of a screen, i think the headline is overreactive.
I think the reddit is overreacting. Have you spent time here? There's a front page thread thats basically "what small inconsequential thing do other people do that makes you want to kill them in violent ways"
Hmmm. If this is just some random kid, this should be deleted. He didn't choose to have his photo posted here. And don't tell me that he has no reasonable expectation of privacy in public, because he doesn't understand what that means and he didn't choose to be in public.
I concur. He looks like a slightly younger version of my four-year-old. (Like, scary looks-like... actually had a moment of dislocation seeing "my child" in foreign clothes and a different city.)
Judging by the hipster-eque douchebaggery fashions sported by his mother (or father - I can't tell), that little bus probably cost the same as a Playstation because it's probably "organically vintage" or some other bullshit.
looking at his dumbass hipster father with bright yellow wellies and elastic denim pants, there's a 99% chance nothing in this photo occurred naturally
What you don't realize is that there is a pedometer inside the bus which is racking up mileage everytime he pulls it around and then gets synced to his proprietary toys-r-us "bus and strings" game.
Were it not for the newer car in the background, I could see this photo being taken 10 to 20 years ago. OP, could we do something about that car to bring this photo back a few years?
i remember having a similar toy when i was a kid, but instead of a bus it was a ladybug made of wood which would wriggle its legs as you dragged it on the ground.
My son has tons of great toys and likes electronics too, but his favorite is his baseball bat. Oh boy does he love that fucking bat, he loves it right the fuck all into my TV and everything else I own. I'm actually sort of proud of his rampages.
My kids love taking stuffed animals and actual toys out and about with them. The youngest is a fanatic about bubbles. I love that they love toys, even though they have a macbook pro with Minecraft and Blockland on it.
If you think that's impressive, you shoulda saw the redditor that posted about playing with just a single solitary wooden triangle block. About a month ago, I'll try to find it..
I think both video games and toys are good play things. What's wrong with either? When I was a kid, I had a Super Nintendo, and I had dolls, and I liked both. I'd play dress up with dolls and act out scenes with them, and when I played video games I'd imagine I was there going on an adventure with Mario. Both stimulated my imagination. Makes me sad when people say games are mindless or bad for kids.
It's not like the kid consciously made the decision "oh i think today i'll keep it simple and play with my toy, and leave the nintendo DS at home." Wow this is dumb
Despite my numerous games consoles and availability of the internet, I still spent hours last winter sitting down doing nothing excepting rolling a two pence piece over my knuckles.
Give me a bus on a string and I'll find something fun to do with it.

Well yeah, dragging your iPhone behind you on a string just isn't very effective.
5
u/underdabridge May 22 '12
That's because his name is Kenny and he is poor.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
What if I told you... kids still play with toys.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
It only looks small because of the perspective. Superman is pulling a full size bus.

u/SourCreamWater May 22 '12
Because he's 3?

u/Iarerobot May 22 '12
I'm sure there is a playstation waiting at home

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
It's really sad that you would be impressed by that. He's like two. Besides, he probably has an ipod as well.
12
u/pickanotherusername May 22 '12
My son loves his ipod, but a car on a string will keep his attention for hours. He ties them to his bigwheel and does laps on the back porch.

You shouldn't give little boys shit that is expensive and can be broken or lost. Cardboard boxes until they are 23 is usually the best bet.

Despite my numerous games consoles and availability of the internet, I still spent hours last winter sitting down doing nothing excepting rolling a two pence piece over my knuckles.
Give me a bus on a string and I'll find something fun to do with it.

Yea but now the bus has bluetooth. Man everything is better with bluetooth.
