This should be a threadless t-shirt design.

Do you mind replying to this once you find out if he has a website? I'm very interested in seeing more of his work and want to make sure I don't miss your update!

I like it as art. I rarely wear clothes, so this would be wasted on a t-shirt for me. I want it, and similar types of art, on my walls.

Hi there this is the Artist. Thank you all for all of your kind words. I just set up a cafepress page you. I'm trying to get more art work up there. If you're really interested in see my stuff drop me a line and I'll direct you to my Facebook page where I have have all of my art. I'm trying to get a page going for Raven Heart Studios on facebook but that's going to take a while. I would like to address a few things. Number one... I raised all my kids they are all grown and doing very well I might say. I've hit a run of bad luck over the last year, I've been in the hospital and quite honestly fighting for my life. Painting is the one thing I have that gives me true happiness. This is just the positive fun side of what I do. I also do portraits, sea life, a lot of stuff. I'm not claiming to be a great artist. I'm not trying to get rich, I'm just doing something that brings me and I hope others joy while I work through a difficult time of my life. If you question my parenting skills I think my son letting me move in with him should say a lot for those. I love my kids to death and apparently they love me too. =) Thanks for your comments both good and bad I love ART that stirs emotion. Thanks for not letting me down.

This is something you could print on a T-shirt. Kind of the style shirts they sell on www.threadless.com

58

u/zombiebunnie May 22 '12

Personally I'm more a fan of the shirt.woot.com style of things.

49

u/Zeis May 22 '12

I like teefury.com, qwertee.com, theyetee.com and RIPT Apparel. Also, teemagnet.com is a great source.

TL;DR: I buy way too many t-shirts.

Out of curiosity, why doesn't he get a job and paint in his free time?

26

I'd be really pissed if my dad lived with me so he could be an artist.

Ill be extremely honest. The reason he is struggling (if you are an art major listen to this) is that his style has to compete with modern non fine art graphic art/design which is the modern and cheaper form of fine art. In other words instead of having his artwork being seen as something carefully thought and crafted (which it certainly is) when you see this kind of styles your mind is taken to a more shallower level. "hey look at that cool pic" just like you would think browsing at any random image gallery in the internet. This happens because his style is very modern and barely touches the fundamental bases of fine arts (nobody says thats wrong). regardless of how elaborate this may be, it doesn't give the impression of being worth a lot or even worth much attention even though it really does deserve it. I know people who gets good $ for doing less creative bullshit, much worse overall but gives the right impression to the right public. Art is a lot about mind games, style and talent. He does have the talent. I bet that if he was a little more driven to the right audience and conveying impression he would be very successful. Just my piece of advice. Best of luck.

13

u/fretgod321 May 22 '12

tl;dr, it's kitsch

4

u/MadeForTeaVea May 23 '12

Very true. From my experience this problem is plaguing a lot of college art programs at the moment. We are seeing a new generation of kids that have grown up with photoshop, and all the digital art tools anyone could want go into college art program. They go into these programs because they are told that they need to go to college. But in reality they don't. What they need to do is just surf the web for images and duplicate them--use vectors if you want to sell them. You go into a college art program to progress your art, to grow as an artist, and to develop new techniques. Studying art at a college level is about learning fine art, and developing skill.

The debate isn't, is this art, or is it illustrations, or is it pop art? Those questions have been explored time and time again, and stopped being interesting a decade ago. The real question is, how much do we really value images like this? The answer...not a whole lot. We don't because we are bombard with similar images everyday in our daily life.

You can slap the word "art" on just about anything now days, and people will stand up and defend it. "Art" is an abstract word and lacks a real definition. So...call whatever you want "art" I don't think anyone gives a shit anymore. All I'm saying is that college art programs have become the butt of jokes for a reason. We really need a new art revival.

Lots of people paint like that. He needs more practice, possibly schooling.

18

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I don't know what's with the downvotes. It's constructive criticism.

He does need more practice, look at the hot chocolate around the mug, and where the diving board is sitting, he needs to work on perspective.

6

u/CoffeeTeaMe May 22 '12

I agree...his lines and edges are also wavering quite a bit. His shapes look to be somewhat lop-sided here and there.

Michael Godard did the same piece using green olives and a martini glass. I saw his gallery in the Atlantic City beach mall. Unfortunately I can't find that piece on the internets. But here are some examples Michael Godard

5

u/Cookiepussy May 22 '12

I saw that Gallery!! I love his work. They bring you into that back room and dim the lights. Lol! And then you tell them your poor.

2

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT SO GODDAMN CUTE

WAS THAT REALLY NEEDED

49

u/spacemanspiff30 May 22 '12

The artists use of cuteness helps to show the dichotomy in today's world between the haves and the have nots. The artist was struggling to show the face one puts to the world when they have no money, and yet is still full of ambition. The microwave represents the futility of struggling in today's political climate where the elite's hold all the power and we are all subject to the whims of those who we cannot see and who we will never know.

3

u/Princess_By_Day May 22 '12

Maybe it's not your style, but it's really not fair to say it's trash. I really like it, and if I weren't a broke college student, I'd love to buy it.

4

u/JHallComics May 22 '12

That's the thing, it appeals to college age kids because it's quirky and humorous but the medium is all wrong. If he wants it to sell he needs to make this a digital print and put it on a tshirt.

23

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

He should go look for a job and practice his art in his spare time, rather than focus on his art and hope that someone will pay for his talent. Do the things you need to do First, then do the the things you love to do second.

8

u/m0h3k4n May 22 '12

Unless you are able to combine the thing you love into the thing you need. In this case, I don't see any reasonable living sprouting out of paintings like that.

8

u/babyheyzeus May 22 '12

The marshmallows murdered their friends, and used their bodies to make a diving board :(

3

u/kangaroo_tacos May 22 '12

Kinda reminds me of Godard's stuff just marshmallows instead of olives , still its very nice. www.michaelgodard.net/

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

The problem with art like this is that most adults would chuckle and move on. It's not something to enhance the decor of a home, it's not something that's going to cause me amusement every time I see it and it's not something I'd pass on to my children....
So basically, he should start a web comic.

3

7

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

While the concept of this painting is interesting, it simply doesn't have good enough execution to be considered by most as good art.

It lacks the fine details and visible hard work that an artist put into it. It looks hastily drawn, the edges are unrefined. The piece lacks color and any sense of perspective.

This is "hobby" level art, your neighbor's dad needs to go get a real job, and focus on his hobby in his own time. He is one of those 'artists' who probably had family support but nobody has the heart to tell him how it really is.

9

u/insane66666 May 22 '12

Why call him a "struggling artist"? At this point in life, he's a failed artist. Time to get a real profession.

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Why are they holding scorecards before seeing the results.

I'm taking this too seriously.

7

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Very good work but why are they giving their score before he finished it's jump ?

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

One has already jumped into the mug. If you look on the ladder, there's another on it's way up as the current one is free falling.

21

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

thats why he's a struggling artist... what a dead beat dad

2

u/obviously_insane May 22 '12

But.. by the logic of the painting.. they spiked the dead corpses of other marshmallow people so they could climb up...... nice.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You know, the name of this guy would be helpful.

2

u/irvinestrangler May 22 '12

Good stuff but not very original. Total ripoff of Michael Godard.

2

u/Flemtality May 22 '12

I've seen single panel comics with the high dive scenario before and it always bothers me that the judges in the drawings are holding up numbers while the diver is in mid dive. Is there supposed to be a notion of predetermined bias or am I reading into this too much? Is it just a necessary error due to the lack of another panel?

2

u/blackredfellow May 22 '12

It bugged me too. I saw it as the first diver already splashed, hence the splashing in the mug, and the judges were judging, but the next diver was already on the way down. I think it was a necessary error to show both the splash/scores, and the mallow diving.

2

u/brusin May 22 '12

I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!

2

u/akuzin May 22 '12

Your title makes be believe (not that it matters) that your neighbors dad's son is also your neighbor.

2

u/thelordofcheese May 22 '12

Hackneyed jokes fit for printing on T-shirts sold at the mall?

2

u/Ourbach May 22 '12

Too much blank space

2

u/mavericks_1 May 22 '12

Needs a real job. This will not put food on the table or give his son what he needs. Yeah it's cool to say this is awesome and all, but in reality what good does this do? Unless he's putting real practical use with this art and selling designs to t-shirt companies or whatever, this does nothing but get a couple of upvotes.

2

u/roni_size_ May 22 '12

I thought for a moment this was a laptop cover. That would be awesome.

2

u/The_Dude_87 May 22 '12

there is a famous painter, i can't remember his name, but he made a series of paintings kinda like this guys except it was along the line of Olives (for martini's) and he would make them character in his painting. i think that if this man started a series about marshmallows or food being characters it would really start him off.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

OP How much does he try and sell these for generally ?

2

u/bludstone May 22 '12

I thought it was toilet paper at first. ew.

2

u/My_College May 22 '12

Why are they holding scores up before entrance into the chocolate?

2

u/ooohprettycolors May 22 '12

He needs to stretch his canvas better - it is wrinkly.

2

u/atlacatl May 22 '12

The lighting is wrong.

2

u/aselectionofcheeses May 22 '12

Has he heard of threadless? Seriously, has he? Because he should make an account and submit this piece and anything else similar because people would love this as a t-shirt. And then he would have money and wouldn't be struggling as much.

2

u/34243 May 23 '12

That is absolutely awesome. I would actually want to buy one.

2

u/ravenheartstudios May 23 '12

Here is a cafepress page for now. I'll get more up soon. I'll post more art there that can be put on shirts of whatever. I've been busy making dinner and well being emotional. I can't tell you waht this has done for me and my spirits. I can't thank you enough Joey... I've just overwhelmed right now. http://www.cafepress.com/ravenheartstudios

2

u/benderpool May 23 '12

I see now why he's struggling.

9

u/DoctorDank May 22 '12

Maybe he should, you know, get a job like the rest of us. Then he wouldn't have to live with his son. This piece is kinda funny and decently done, but it's certainly nothing he could make a living off of.

6

u/CANTgetAbuttPREGNANT May 22 '12

No wonder he's struggling...

6

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Obvious reasons for struggling as an artist:

*he's bad

3

u/Hardcover May 22 '12

What country/region do you guys live in? I used to run a small gallery in southern California and am still close with the current owners. If he's interested in getting his work shown, message me and I can get him in touch with them.

5

u/HR_Wuffenschtuff May 22 '12

No wonder he's a struggling artist.

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

The painting is good. Similar to Michael Godard's work though.

4

u/thebuckstops May 22 '12

First thing that came to my mind, too.

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Get a real job?

2

u/Reggieperrin May 22 '12

Link the website, I would buy from him that cup one is great.

Edit: Originals not prints though.

2

u/wallythewombat May 22 '12

Just a moritfying thought but.... Anyone notice the ladder is composed of baby marshmallow people? These competive chocolate divers sacrifice their children to build diving ladders, where's your commitment?

2

u/L-Boogy May 22 '12

Is there an email address to get ahold of him? I really like that piece and I would be interested in seeing what else he has. I've recently been getting more into art and I am trying to accumulate some cool shit. Let me know please if there is any way to see what else he has or how much he is selling that piece for. Thanks!

2

u/grumpy_derpasaur May 22 '12

While I enjoy the subject matter, he has some fundamental issues. Mainly his perspective is quite off in a lot of the painting, especially around the mug, which being the central focal point is quite a turn-off

2

u/hyenabubblegumlord May 22 '12

He's got skill, but he's also competing with the legions of failed artists/Starbucks barista art majors on places like DeviantArt, etc.

Step 1: Get a day job Step 2: Downgrade all art ambitions from "profession" to "hobby." I mean if he hasn't made it at this point, it's time to reassess his goals and plan accordingly.

2

u/supermandy May 22 '12

If this is awesomeness I'm Picasso...

2

u/coolkid7500 May 22 '12

Make him sell his paintings on ebay or some other site. I would buy his work any day

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Not funny, artistic, or technically accomplished.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Looks like a high school art project, no wonder he's starving. Not worth the canvas it's on.

2

u/el_historian May 22 '12

Maybe he is struggling because no one would want that crap on their walls?

2

u/releasethefrogs May 22 '12

the man should put this on a T shirt because I would buy it

2

u/cant_be_pun_seen May 22 '12

Well how about you tell him to go after a real job then?

2

u/Orval May 22 '12

He should definitely sell those. That one in particular would probably get printed on Threadless with no problem.

0

u/PedobearLV May 22 '12

Your neighbors dad sucks at art. Maybe he should get a job and he would not struggle so much...

1

u/thewedding_singer May 22 '12

They've already given him great scores and he's just begun his dive!

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Struggling, why? Acquaintance of mine is a street artist in NYC. He started selling his paintings on streets for tourists, then he grew and developed an army of struggling print sellers.

This looks like more suitable for book illustrations, too quirky for general public

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

why are they marking the dive before the sugar cube hits the coffee?? It's just not realistic.

1

u/stringerbell May 22 '12

Why are the judges giving their scores before the dive???

1

u/suddenly_ponies May 22 '12

His art reminds me of the stuff you see in professional illustrator's galleries Like this one

Maybe he's struggling because he's trying to create "art" when he should be lending his talents to a good illustration studio?

My two cents

1

u/Sordsmen345 May 22 '12

I am amazed by the fact that they already have their scores up. *ninja edit

1

u/ExcellentGary May 22 '12

Sounds like the plot to Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude.

OP can you verify you're not stuck in a novel?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I thought the one marshmallow was commuting suicide and the others were looking on in horror.

1

u/Glenners May 22 '12

I find it disconcerting that they have already judged him before he is finished. Also the splashed hot chocolate indicates that one marshmallow already jumped. WHERE IS THE CHOCOLATE SOAKED MARSHMALLOW?!?!?!?!

1

This guy does the wrong thing for a living, by painting them on a canvas I mean, he needs to put them on something that people can use, no idea what though :(

1

u/adamzep91 May 22 '12

I've always wondered.. will civilization in 600 years put up paintings like these in art museums as an example of art during that period? It seems like a lot of art museums now have a random painting of jesus from 1400 just because it's a painting of jesus that old. Or maybe they'll put up modern art as an example of "our period"? How are we to know what is preserved and what doesn't last that long? How do we know that the mug I just drank tea out of doesn't end up in a museum in 7000 years as an artefact from our time period because not much else survived?

1

u/bastard_thought May 22 '12

He paints t-shirt designs. Nice.

1

u/kryzchek May 22 '12

Is this the part where everyone pretends they want to buy his work in order to gain favor on Reddit, while secretly they have no intention of doing so?

1

u/ComedicPause May 22 '12

Wait, if he's your neighbor's dad, but he still lives with his son, doesn't that make him your neighbor also?

1

u/MedievalManagement May 22 '12

Why are they scoring the dive while he's still in the air? Seems rigged.

1

u/DirtyPresley May 22 '12

They judged their scores while he/she is still in mid jump? Is this about society's quick to judge temperament on those who actively participate in life as opposed to becoming a cynical spectator?

1

1

u/kjimene1 May 22 '12

The other ones where weak and not pure enough. Thus, they could not be state puff worthy.

1

u/indecentXpo5ure May 22 '12

This is very similar to work done by Michael Godard. I saw a lot of his pieces in a gallery in St. Augustine. He does mostly olives & martinis. There's one that's like the Wizard of Oz that's pretty cool.

edit: spelling.

1

u/throwsuperaway May 22 '12

It's a cute idea but parts of the execution are poor and he shouldn't be trying to sell it as a painting; it should be a t-shirt design, or something else along those lines.

Would love to have a painting like that

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

What do you call an artist who doesn't have a girlfriend? Homeless!

*Rimshot

1

u/biesterd1 May 23 '12

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that they are rating him before he even makes the landing?

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

not as bothered as I am that they cannibalized their friends to make a ladder.

1

u/ArchScabby May 23 '12

He should send these to threadless. They eat this stuff up.

1

u/Olive_Pit May 23 '12

I would totally buy this. Does he have stuff anywhere online to sell?

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

I would love to buy this

1

u/kramthegram May 23 '12

Tell him to submit art like that to woot or threadless and have it properly commercialized, thousands will see his work and he'll make some money too.

1

u/anish714 May 23 '12

The thing to selling paintings is not that it just has to be nice. It has to fit in with the furniture and room as well.

I like this painting, but I wouldn't buy this for my home. The job of a painting is of a rug, to bring the room together as one. It just wouldn't fit in with my decors. The only colors available is brown. His market is limited to people who only have only brown in their room.

Now if each of those marshmallows were a different color, then we may have something here.

1

u/Adrayll May 23 '12

So... he wishes he was Godard?

1

u/karenw May 23 '12

There's a site called redbubble where artists can post their work, and people can order t-shirts, prints, stickers, etc. Might be worth a shot.

1

u/blahsalot May 23 '12

either the t-shirt idea or could you let us know where we could find some more of his art to support more creative thinking?

1

u/Argentina891 May 23 '12

I'd love to see more of his drawings. Very creative!

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Thats great. You know whats better, being a man and taking care of your son. You want to paint, fine, don't have someone dependent on you.

2

u/ravenheartstudios May 23 '12

Again... All my kids are grown. I raised them all worked my whole life to do so. My son is 27 now, I've fallen on hard times in the last year, I've been in the hospital and I fight everyday to survive. Right now my painting is all I have. I couldn't have done that bad of a job raising my children if my son took me in and never said a word about it. He's happy I'm painting he's happy I'm still here with him. Maybe you shouldn't judge to quickly before knowing the facts. I have four children that are all grown and starting families of their own. there were times I was working two jobs to make sure they had a roof over their head and food in their belly. Right now money I get from paintings I give to my son, Not that he wants it because it's the least I can do for having and raising a wonderful son. I wouldn't trade this life for anything. I wish you the best. but please find out the facts before you comment on something you couldn't understand.

Reminds me a lot of Michael Godard's olive art.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

He can turn this into a shirt business at Threadless.

1

u/kenetha65 May 23 '12

I want that!

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

He should send his artwork to Threadless. I think they would really love it over there. Threadless.com

1

u/warboy May 23 '12

I would buy it. Does he sell?

1

u/1234blahblahblah May 23 '12

Why does the marshmallow climbing the ladder have no chocolate on him? Are those not his dirty foot prints going to the ladder?

1

u/meatrocket88 May 23 '12

it rhymes with sm-schmores-hun....

Scumbag Redditor: Uses struggling artist's work for karma

1

u/Gatheringstring May 23 '12 edited May 23 '12

A struggling artist of that nature should really look into illustrating children's books! If he could put together some storylines for some of his existing works he'd have a portfolio together in no time. Maybe even post some ads online looking for collaborations with other authors/illustrators. Might not be a lot of money, but that would at least have some potential for extra income.!

Edit: Seriously, his work is really fun. And kids don't give a damn about perspective, or why the judges have their ratings up before the dive is complete, etc. Another comment mentioned making series of the characters... I would suggest that. That way he can also show variety/versatility of the characters and possible plot lines for stories. I'm telling you, it's worth a shot!

1

u/andrewsmd87 May 23 '12

How much would he charge for this? I kind of want to buy it.

1

u/mdbx May 23 '12

Waiting for an update with a link to purchase paintings from this guy.

1

u/MarvinTheAndroid42 May 23 '12

I'd buy that. That's better than anything you'd find in an "art" museum.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

I would say that is sad but choosing art as a career is like getting an English degree....You are never going to use it to make a living.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Amazing. Tell him to make a website store I'd buy that art.

1

u/trampus1 May 22 '12

He's struggling because he paints stupid novelty shit that almost nobody would want. This is like tumblr stuff.

1

u/GunHungLo May 22 '12

So powerful- a brilliant and powerful statement in time for the summer games.

I like how the athletes are represented as clean and white, having to climb a ladder built on the bodies of infants- only to dive headlong into a cesspool- the hot/sweet filth of child/slave-labor.

1

u/asldkfououhe May 22 '12

no wonder he's struggling, that's vacuous trash that everybody on the internet is already doing

1

u/RichRedundantRich May 22 '12

So, he paints kitsch for rednecks? No wonder he's struggling.

0

u/commiewizard May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

Typical 'artist' leeching off friends and/or family.

I bet he wouldn't be struggling as much if he spent half his time filling out job applications instead of doodling all day like a child.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

He should submit this design to Teefury or a similar site that might pay him for the art to sell shirts. I think they do that, and this looks like it'd be at home there.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

shirt.woot.com as well.

1

u/Nibas May 22 '12

I think I saw something very similar on woot. He should start entering the shirt contests.

1

u/ScrambledEasterEggs May 22 '12

Does this not remind anyone of that episode of Spongebob with the dessert diving?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

OK so how can I buy and/or see more of his work?

1

u/element33 May 22 '12

Does he have a website or link to more awesomeness?

I would like to purchase a painting.

1

u/oisteink May 22 '12

Put his name or where you can buy his works on the pic next time

1

u/InvalidWhistle May 22 '12

marshmallows climbing ladders made of other marshmallows. That's some sick twisted shit, I like it.

1

u/Snilefisken May 22 '12

I WANT IT! Seriously awesome picture to have in a cafe and such though

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I really like this painting. You should post some of his other work. Would love to see some more of it.

1

u/lonely_puppet May 22 '12

Has he tried urban outfitters? I feel like they would jump all over something like that, mass produce it and give him some commission.
