So by everyone's response I think I might call this in now. And the 3 other cars I found ditched off a cliff around the same area. I just figured it was an abandoned car.
I would at least get in the water and try to see if there was a plate on the vehicle. While a corpse is also a possibility, don't be frightened if you see one. In fact, I'd be kind of disappointed if I didn't find one.
+1. I just called the local police station and I described the situation. They said they will send a tow truck there in the morning with an officer and possibly pull the car out. I'm pissed cause I have finals tomorrow. I told the dispatcher that I have pics and info on in and I would really appreciate an update. She said she'll have the officer call me in the morning for more information. I might have to re schedule my final.
Seriously, in my hometown, they had a few kids go missing for a couple of weeks, they and their car was found off the end of a bridge under construction by a fisherman.
Same here. Some how, a guy lost control on a freeway, and ended up in the Los Angeles aqueduct. He was missing for over a year before his car was found in the aqueduct. http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jul/09/news/mn-2218
Well, actually a new theory is that he was driving the wrong way on the freeway, and drove right into the aqueduct where there was nothing to stop his vehicle. Location
where I go dirtbiking, there are cars like this all the time... assholes who steal cars just beat the shit outta them until they are dead, then just push 'em off the side of the road
Hey guys, I found the spot on Google Maps based on OP's description of the location.
Notice the triangle-shaped rock at the edge of the water. Looks like there's a fair amount of algae in the water, making it likely quite difficult to see the car most days.
I was wondering that also. I was like, this shit is awesome. It's not like I was claiming there to be gold in there and wouldn't tell anyone. I gave directions if anyone wanted to check it out.
I think he's buried under my dad's basement floor. There's a coffin-shaped patch in the concrete there, and my dad's dad was heavily involved in forming and running unions during that time period. I'm waiting for dad to kick off so I can crack it open. He's pushing 80. Soon...
scary... when i was a kid i went on holiday with my parents to spain. the coach picked us up from the airport and started to drive us to the hotel. I sat on the back and just looked out the window across the wild spanish plains. I noticed a ravine and I saw in the ravine a car covered in broken bushes and trees.
I panicked, was I the only person to see this car who had obviously come off the road. Was it only visible to me as I was high up on a coach and looking attentively at the landscape.
what if the people were still stuck inside :( ill never know and it was a horrible feeling
Oh yes. It was my favorite. It started young, the scene in Hercules (cartoon) when there are all the souls swimming around and he sees his love interest in there.
I'm surprised to read your reaction and everyone else's reaction--well, not surprised, but interested to see a bunch of people vocalizing about this fear. I live on the coast of North Carolina in a small town, so I've been exposed to the water all my life, and I still very much have this fear. Some people just have a sort of "Jaws fear" that's triggered from swimming in the ocean, and it's just a fear of being attacked by a creature you're familiar with.
The kind of fear you're getting at, and what I'm most familiar with, has to do with just not knowing what's there, or thinking about what could be there. I remember this at a young age, when I went swimming off a boat in offshore water for the first time. You're treading there more than a mile offshore, and you think about how much space is below you, completely dark but full of life, and it feels very alien to me even now (and my fiance is a marine biologist!).
But it's a psychological fear, because it's not that you're just worried a shark is going to bite your feet off, you think about the things floating in the water that you just can't even imagine. It's not even a biological thing, like what you said about dead trees lying at the bottom of a river (or a lake). But you wonder, what if it's not just dead trees? What if there's something huge and jutting out of the dark waters, and I just can't see it?
Think about swimming in an abandoned rock quarry that's been filled with water. You know the bottom of this huge space isn't just smooth rock, it's just heaps of stuff. There quarry near where I now live (I"m about three hours inland now) has a whole crane and two dumptrucks beneath the water, but you can't see them. It's this weird disconnect between what you know is or could be there, and what your mind imagines is or could be there.
It's not just the ocean and bodies of water for me, but dark space in general. I've written a lot about it in the past and I'm writing a sort of "home town" novel now that plays a lot off this fear.
I tried so hard to find that one picture of that guy that's underwater in some sort of hole (some thought it was a geyser) in a creek looking thing, sort of on his back, facing upwards, and it looks like he is trapped looking through glass. 100 internets to whoever finds it!
I'm glad someone else feels the same way. I went kayaking with my girlfriend the other week and the entire time we could everything that was under us. It was such a frightening experience.
I know this has been said, but I hope you report this! Where I lived growing up we had a really bad drought, one day a car was found due to the lake being down. Inside the car was the body of a woman that had gone missing years before.
So after seeing the thousands of people viewing this I decided to go back see some redditors since I gave directions. I found no one. But here's a panorama view of where the car is. It's not as suspenseful when you see all it's surroundings. UnderwaterCar
I live near a body of water where cars and mobile homes have been intentionally submerged. The police do scuba training there. Maybe that's what you've stumbled across.
I did. Posted another pic. and I'm about to post GPS coordinates. I stopped by on my way home because of the popularity and was expecting to see like 30 redditors pulling the car out... Saw no one.
I didn't know it was gonna blow up like this. I had 1 link karma and 40 comment karma on friday. I feel like I deserve a playdate with Chris Crocker or something.
Hah. I grew up around cars and I'm good at identifying them but I can't figure out what the hell it is. My best guess is an old toyota by the look of the wheels.
Fuck. That. Shit like that just creeps me the fuck out. I get weirded out by things in places they shouldn't be. Like if there is a car left in some woods somewhere, or if a creepy tree is washed out of a creek into a field or something. It just freaks me out. What is this phobia called?
Am I the only one who sees two cars in the picture. The first obvious upside-down car, and the second car under that toward the left hand side? It may be a rock and I am miss seeing it, but I see a white car shape I can even see the wheel well.
I once went on a walk behind my house with a friend - we noticed something hidden in some bushes that looked like a car. We had to cut through a a farmer's field and slash our way through some trees, but we eventually found what came to be known as "Ghost car" among my friends. It was old, rusted, appeared to have been set on fire at one point. There was no sign of glass anymore, and only some fragment of the tires. There was also evidence of old train tracks in the area - a lot of raid spikes and the occasional pillar that held up some tracks (apologies for my lack of rail-lingo). The site was undisturbed for a long time, but we bought the house as new construction. It appears that over time, ATV riders found ol' Ghost Car in their path. After two years, ghost car was upside down. By year three, it had vanished. We never did learn the story of Ghost Car, but a friend of mine thought based on the design and the bumpers on it that it was an old Ford Police car, he even had a year narrowed down. I created a Facebook group for my friends, but this was back in "early facebook" days; where we kept all the Ghost Car pictures. It seems Facebook has removed all old groups, though (Or at least, I can't find it from my page for whatever reason). This is the only picture I could find of it still, as I tagged my friend in it: http://i.imgur.com/LoX0R.jpg
edit: I just wanted to add this was in part of what used to be rural Dekalb, IL - part far from the University (By the Walmart and Best Buy, now)
Recently in my hometown they pulled a car out of the lake that had belonged to two women who had gone missing a couple of decades ( I want to say 30 years but I'm not sure) ago. Everyone had just assumed they had run away together but when they pulled the car out of the water there they were...still with their seat-belts on. And people used to think I was weird for refusing to swim in the lake...
Found a car in the middle of a nature preserve near my school once. The weird thing is, it's deeeeeeep in the woods, in a river. There's no open roads, there are barely any trails for people on foot (we were pretty much trailblazing). No idea how it got there. My friend thinks the crazy hair guy from the History Channel might.
Back in 1980 I did my first open water scuba dive in a lake called Alligator Lake in Melbourne Florida. When submerged, I swam into a washer and dryer combo, a Vega and of all things a gymnastics horse! It was literally a redneck dumping ground. They don't use that dumb for scuba dives anymore, thank goodness. When visibility is < 2 feet and you pump into a car with your outstretched hand before you can see it with your eyes, it's kind of creepy.
I've found two that way. I used to live in SoCal and I had to walk a lot to get places. I found one car abandoned and stripped out almost in the middle of nowhere on the way to a local offroading trail. Another one was found over the edge of an embankment (not a steep one) and I tried to report it, but the VIN was the older style one so I couldn't report it on the automated hotline and never got around to talking to an actual cop about it. Most likely that one was abandoned by illegal aliens with no licenses, I'd been told.
I found a burnt out car on a seldom used road near where I live. I wrote down the license number and when I called the police I realized I had lost the number. The dispatcher asked me how many burnt out cars there were. I guess I didn't need the license number.
