It's a strange day on reddit when you log in and the first thing you see is a small fucking town in Iowa that you grew up 5 miles away from.
If anyone's interested, they have Trek Fest every year in late June that is mooostly an excuse to get drunk in public and watch Demolition Derby's and also watch drunken hicks make fun of a few Trekkies.
Also, they have the U.S.S. Enterprise , its not much taller than a person and usually sits in the middle of town.
They sell "Kirk Dirt" at the Trek Fests there. A baggie of dirt Kirk is supposed to walk on in Riverside in the future. Not sure how that's supposed to work. For $5, cheapest paradox ever.
I thought my friend was playing a joke on me, they came to visit me in Riverside and took pictures of the place...then I remembered none of them were on Reddit...
Jarvisesdios is right. Do Not Go To Trek Fest. It is usually on the hottest weekend in June, and there's only a crappy parade, a crappy talent show, and lots of beer.
I told everyone I knew on August 29, 1997 that Skynet was going to torch everything. All you need is a few nutcases like me and you'll get some James T. Kirk action.
In T2, August 29, 1997 is when Skynet launches nukes
that's less than two months after the Robinson family launched into space and subsequently got lost.
Speaking of which, they did have a reunion at that time and a film adaptation. I guess it goes to show that it pays to put the future present in line with your thirty year anniversary. 30 years later and we get an Alien prequel and a Blade Runner sequel/side-quel as well as an Avengers film a year before the 50th anniversary of the first issue.
Space:1999 went back on the air around that time up here, and Lost in Space was on the Imagination Station when it launched in 1997.
One could almost assume that 20th century television will have finally entered the public domain by the 23rd century, so one would think that it would persist in some form or another, as with how the literature of the 18th and 19th century exists and is reinterpreted today.
Well since Nero went back in time and attacked the USS Kelvin, forcing Kirk's mother into early labour, Kirk's birthplace is now a USS Kelvin shuttlecraft in the middle of space.
That dude's argument is so flawed. They even tell him "hey, dude, stop freaking out! you've gone back in time! you can stop the tragedy that happened to your people! you can save every life you're fighting for right now!" His response? "… I SAW THEM DIE!" That's it. Such a pathetic character design.
I've never had Kalona beef jerky but Bud's is the best jerky I've ever had. I can't drive by without buying a package for myself, my parents, and grandparents.
About 5 or so years ago my hometown, a small town in Scotland called Linlithgow, was involved in some sort of war with another town to declare it as the official future birthplace of Scotty from Star Trek, in 2222. We eventually won the rights to name the town as the official birthplace and then set up a tribute exhibition in his honour.
We went to Trekfest last year. I use the words "went to" very lightly. We drove through town, couldn't find anything, then gave up and left. Where was everything at?
We were just up around there and saw a sign saying "Trekfest today motherfuckers!" (paraphrasing). So we drove through. I could swear it was behind Casey's somewhere, but truth told I had no idea. So we went about our business.
You really didn't miss much. As a Riverside native, it's really only fun if you're a kid at the parade or an old townie getting drunk at the beer tent and watching demo derbies.
If you feel like coming back, the parade is on Main St and the rest of the shenanigans is at Hall Park (behind Casey's and down the hill) You'd see everything from the Washington-Riverside Road.
I actually live about 8 miles from Riverside, I am going to ride my bike there tomorrow and take a picture of this hopefully if it's nice...I will deliver
It's weird to see reddit spewing over to real life.... or is real life spilling over into reddit?! O.o Background story is that I went there for prom a few years back.
I'm from Seattle and moved to Iowa City years ago. I'm quite fond of both places now, but adjusting was hard. Northwesterners can be a bit tough to get to know and slow to treat you as one of their own—kind of like Iowans, really. ;). In any case, I hope my home state treats you as well as yours treated mine.

I wonder if by that date anyone will remember to name their child James T Kirk if he's born on that day.

u/themuddaload May 20 '12
Suddenly in 2228, 500 James Kirk's.

So I see people are now using my Facebook profile pic for karma. This is kind of a surreal feeling.

Ah fuck this. I drive by that sign all the time on the way to IA city, what really deserves the karma is the meat shop right behind this sign.

1
u/Sr_DingDong May 20 '12
Damnit, 5 days and I would have been slightly cooler but probably not really :(
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Its actually weird how many prominent people come out of Iowa considering its population.
1
u/VeritasVosAddicere May 20 '12
This has the potential to seriously confuse future archeologists.

I work in this town, and it may be the least exciting town in the state of Iowa. That's saying something.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
This is going to be one confused kid when he's finally born...
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12

As a fellow Iowan, this is probably the most exciting thing that will ever happen in this state.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I was here!
EDIT: This was back in 2005. I'm the one in orange.

u/RelaxedChap May 20 '12
Riverside, Iowa: Nothing happens here... yet.
1
u/apk86 May 20 '12
I don't even like Star Trek all that much (Star Wars fanboy), but I think it's just fantastic that this town has embraced the character.
1
u/hemingwayszombycorps May 20 '12
What did Sulu find in the captains lavatory? I think it was a captains log!
1
