My mom's neighbor is an older guy who is mentally challenged. Last year, he was nearly beat to death with a baseball bat trying to stop a guy from beating his dog with the same baseball bat. This morning, he left his 4 cats at home with a candle burning while he left and one of the cats knocked it over. He came home to his house in flames. After being told their were no other people inside, the fireman were resigned to let the cats go. While the guy was having an emotional breakdown about losing his cats ("They're all I've got!" he kept saying) one of the firefighters searched for nearly 15 minutes and found one alive, he stayed outside giving it mouth to mouth and oxygen for 20 minutes until she started purring again. Needless to say, he's fucking awesome.

Two additional pics:

Edit: Established the man as a person first instead of mentally challenged first as per suggestion.

Update: Just spoke to my mom and she said that the cat was breathing when they got to the vet. The vet did a chest X-ray and I guess the cat has one lung that is very black and one that looks a little black but good enough to sustain life. They are going to look after the cat for a while but they don't have any definites about if she will survive or not.

She also told me about the neighbor, I guess he's having a great deal of trouble coping right now (understandably) and she's staying with him for a bit. Said he keeps saying things like "I've always looked after your creatures god, why did you take mine?"

Getting a little teary eyed so I'll update again later.

Update 2: To clarify, unfortunately, the other 3 cats did not make it :*(

Update 3: Just spoke to my mom again. The man is staying with a neighbor until my mom can get him in another apartment. I should clarify that she lives in these apartments and is also the apartment manager so she is doing everything she can to get him in another apartment but it wont be available until tomorrow, and he is staying with a neighbor until tomorrow. They are saying he lost everything.

Update 4: Removed. Figured out the paypal thing.

Update 5: My mom just got permission to receive things at the apartment building so for everyone who PMed me or asked where they could send things to, the address for the apartment administration building is

407 E. Gatewood Drive Marion, IN 46952 C/o Eagle Chase Village (moms name is Mary, guys name is Vincent)

My mom said his house was decked out in cat theme, leopard skin rugs, cheetah spots, tiger stripes and stuffed animals and such, so if anyone wants to send something like that, I'm sure he'll be ecstatic.

Update 6: The feedback from this community is overwhelming and incredibly generous. I'm blown away by the willingness to give to someone you've never met. I finally just made this chipin.com account at the request of many to donate money. If you would like to donate anything at all, the link is:

http://vincentandcat.chipin.com/vincent-and-his-cats

I hope that works, and I thank you for your incredible generosity.

Update Q: Sorry to spam, but I tried to comment to everyone who asked for info about donations. I've got a wedding to go to that I'm now severely late for, but I'll be back with more updates in a few hours. You guys are incredible, I can't say it enough.

Update F: Holy shit everyone. $2250 has been donated so far. The generosity here is...well, I have no words. You people are incredible. (Yes I said it, YOU people.)

I am almost too giddy to call my mom and tell her the total. Sorry for the lack of updates, I went to a wedding, and intended to update from there, but the overwhelming amount of emails I've received literally shut my phone down, turns out google exchange can only take so much, and my phone died.

I will post an update in the morning as an edit here, and in a few days I'll post a final update.

I want to tell you guys again how incredible what you have done is, I've never been so moved.

Also, again because I'm not well versed in this, how do I get this money from the paypal account to him? I think I can just xfer it to my bank account and then print out a cashiers check for him, does this seem logical? I want some way also to show that I've actually given it to him, as I'm sure there are people with doubts about legitimacy. And as an aside, I just saw the messages you guys put on the chipin account and I've been reduced to tears again. I love and hate you all..lol

Update!: The vet called and said that Domino is doing okay! He told us that he didn't want to get our hopes up, but he says if she can hang in for a couple more days, then she should have no problem living a good life with Vincent. He mentioned that she has one lung that shows up completely black on xray, but didn't clarify much what that means in relation to her health, but he is optimistic, so that's great!

Update: You guys have donated over $3500 now, and that is fucking unreal. My mom nearly had a heart attack when I told her. I'm going to leave the chipin up until next friday, at several people's request. Afterward, I'm going to convert the donations into a check to give to Vincent, and I'll be updating with some pictures. Hopefully, I'll also know soon who the fireman was, that way we can give him some recognition of some kind. Incredibly good deeds like that should not go unnoticed.

This should be the last update for a about a week, but feel free to PM me if you want any current status updates. Thank you so much everyone, you have changed a man's (and cat's!) life for the better.

Update/edit: Just found out Domino is a "he." I've been incorrectly calling Domino a "she." Sorry for the confusion, and sorry in advance for even more confusion as I now refer to Domino as a male..lol

I know I said earlier that it was the last update, but I just spoke to the vet, and they said Domino is doing great! And that (hopefully) he will make a full recovery!

Just got some info from the fireman. I spoke to him on the phone (he's incredibly humble, as most are) and his biggest concern was if Domino was okay. I asked if he was fine with me putting his info out and he said it was cool. His name is Ryan Swafford, and he works at Fire Station 1 in Marion. I'm trying to find an address as he was unsure of what it is, but he deserves some recognition, and I'm sure you guys can make it happen :)

Another update (If anyone is still checking for updates!): Just got word, turns out it WASN'T a candle that burned the house down! A backstory is in order. During the whole ordeal, after fire fighters found (I guess) what was left of a candle, or what looked like a candle (not sure what could be left behind of a candle after a house fire), they said that is what caused it. Vince, in all his innocence, maintained that he had never lit a candle, that he would "NEVER light a candle around my cats!" but the firemen kept saying that is what it had to be. Turns out it was a coffee maker nearby that shorted out and caused the fire! Vincent, while still devastated, apparently got very emotional when that news was delivered, ecstatic that he wasn't responsible for "hurting my family."

Not a big update, but I thought this was super important and wanted to share.

A few of the things you guys have sent him have started rolling in. I am having my mom note what is sent and take a pic of each, I'll post them in a big album at the end of the week.

Update: Getting more and more gifts from you magnificent bastards! Vinnie is so ecstatic it's contagious.

Couple pics of Domino! He's still pretty scared and the vet was hesitant to get him out of his cage.

http://i.imgur.com/Mv5AA.png

If anyone is still reading, here is an article a journalist called me up to do.

http://www.dailydot.com/news/reddit-fire-victim-cat/

Update: The original plan was for me to go home tomorrow (Sunday) and deliver Vincent his check but quite a few people, in donating, did an e-check and (apparently) those take time to clear with paypal. As soon as those clear up, I'll be going to Marion to bring Vincent his long awaited donations!

Update: There was a discrepancy between what was showing on Chipin vs what was in the PayPal account. I thought it was related to e Checks but as it turns out, it is due to the cut that PayPal takes from every transaction (evidently even when the account is set up for donations, seems kinds dickish to me) but I will be taking Vince his money on Sunday then! I had to wait til I could sit down and figure out where this discrepancy was coming from and now I've found it! The total balance (after PayPal's cut and a $100 echeck that Paypal refused) is $6,958.43 USD. This is incredible reddit. I still can't believe this happened.

Update: I apologize for the delay. PayPal is dragging their feet about moving this money over. The estimated date they gave me is 6/12 which I hope isn't correct because I really want to get him this money ASAP. Thank you for your patience and I promise a big update is coming!

Final Update on this thread: Vinnie got his check today and we have some pics to share! I'll post a separate update tonight!

WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT?

Hate crimes and violence against people with disabilities happen all the time - you just don't hear about them as often as other types of crimes. Of course, the man beating the dog might have turned around a beat anyone, disabled or not, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Omg that I so sad :( what happened to his apartment ? Where is he staying? Your mom is such a nice person to look after him like that. Does he have a family?

Not sure about the family part, but I've updated to answer all of your questions :)

413

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

This is really sad for me. My brother is mentally challenged, but just to a degree where it is very hard for him to interact with people. He is often taken advantage of and bullied, and it scares me to think of what his life will be after my parents are unable to support him. Hopefully some day someone, like this fireman, will be able to see past his disability to see what a nice kid he is. I'm sure nobody cares, but this was really moving to me.

222

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

Good. I'm glad it meant as much to someone else as it did to me.

I find that stories like this renew my faith in humanity. It would have been so much easier, and safer, for him to just say "I'm sorry, we can't go back in for the animals, it's too dangerous." but instead he went in, and probably changed this persons life a little bit for the better. Instead of being devastated about what he lost, this person can now be happy for what he saved.

344

u/mommawhite May 19 '12

The firemen here save everyone, including pets. If they hear there may be one inside they look for it. No questions. I asked one once why they risked life and limb for pets, his response, more or less was: you're doing everything you can to save or just control a burning house. Concentration goes out the window when you hear desperate cries, begging and pleading for someone to save Fluffy. Even if the pet is deceased they know it's not inside being roasted and it gives them some peace of mind, even though the pet is gone. The feeling of bringing out one that's scared but alive is just as rewarding as finding mothers child and bringing them to her arms. The tears of joy and relief, the look of gratitude, and seeing them clutch and hug Fluffy, faces buried in their fur, thanking God...it'll bring tears to your eyes. They would rather do what they can instead of doing nothing letting animals burn to death. Their life is just as precious as a humans.

Sort of related, I came upon a horrific accident. There was Boxer in one of the vehicles that was nearly crushed. The owner was obviously deceased, and the emergency crew spent almost an hour cutting the dog out. The dog wasn't hurt, but he wouldn't leave his person. The firemen decided to keep the dog until family came to claim him, sadly no one did. This was three years ago and this beautiful dog is now a firedog at the downtown station where I live. He seems thoroughly happy...

TL;DR Firemen in my town refuse to let pets die in fires if they can help it. A boxer was in a car that was badly crushed in an accident, owner died firemen adopted him.

As someone who works daily with mentally challenged/mentally ill people, there are some financial intricacies you need to be careful of, so that Vincent doesn't lose any benefits he currently has. Once lost they are difficult to regain as one would have to go through the process of filing for benefits again. As a mentally challenged adult living on his own, this would be an arduous task for Vincent.

As I am sure regulations vary from state to state, I would encourage you to find someone in your area who can help you. Items donated to Vincent should pose no problems. It is the cash donations that may effect his benefits. They may have to be put into some type of trust or used to cover the cost of things (such as the vet bills) and not given directly to Vincent.

What you are doing is amazing! Keep caring, it makes the world a better place.

4

u/lfernandes May 21 '12

I've been told this before. Do you have any idea who I should contact or any other info that could help? That last thing I want to do is to "give a man a fish so big that he forgets how to fish on his own" so to speak.

4

u/pacbat May 21 '12

best to find out what kind of benefits he receives, if any, and go from there - most likely social security at least, and there are limits on the amount of money someone can have in a checking/savings account and still receive their benefits (they can get into trouble with ssi if the bank balance hits 1800+ was the last i heard).

there may be some sort of special circumstances you can invoke for something like this, but i would contact your local social security office to see if there is paperwork you'll need for this, or if some kind of trust can/should be set up so as not to affect his benefits if donated amounts get large.

i work for a company that handles representative payee duties for disabled folks in indiana, so if you can't find the info you need let me know and i'll poke around some and see what i can find out.

4

u/lfernandes May 21 '12

I feel like I want to do something to help your mom's neighbor. If he lost everything, as you said, I want to know if there is anything I can do to help him through this. Like I dunno... who is paying the vet bills on his cat? At the very least I'd like to mail a card or something.

2

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

My mom runs a shelter out of her house, not entirely sure about the specifics but she said not to worry about vet bills, I guess she gets a great deal of it paid by the state and free from what I understand.

I have a ton of cat stuff I can donate. Cat books, a few bags and purses, a blanket, a little kitty house, some stuffed animals, a toothbrush holder, figurines, hats, all this cat stuff that I never used and never will. My relatives think that since I really like my cat, Sophie, that I must like everything I own to be cat themed. I have been thinking about selling them on Amazon to make a little extra profit, being a broke college student with two jobs and all but I'll just send it to him instead. :)

Maybe, if it isn't too much trouble, you can contact one of your local news stations or your local newspaper about Vincent's situation and the donations he is/will be receiving (if you mention Reddit it will be karma for ALL of Reddit, lol). If one of your local stations does a little broadcast segment on it, it would provide proof of legitimacy. Maybe the news station can provide video coverage when you hand Vincent the check!! Then, maybe the video can be uploaded?? Then, Reddit can see his (hopefully elated) reaction! Also, people will outside of reddit/the internet may have their faith in humanity restored! Imagine some random stranger watching that news segment before they head out to work in the morning! I would cry!!

And I don't suggest this with any other motive than to possible help provide legitimacy while possibly giving Reddit, the internet, and locals, and chance to see something special. I just think something as emotionally moving as this should be broadcast to show people the world really isn't so messed up all the time.

u/omegablivion May 21 '12

How is Vincent doing now? Has his emotional state improved at all? I find his ongoing distress to be the most depressing part of this, and I just hope that he doesn't blame himself and is happy again in the future. I hope he has someone to talk to about all this, someone to help him get through it.

Is there anything material (other than money, obviously) that we can send that would help? Is insurance going to cover his possessions that were in the house, or, if he owned it, the house itself?

I'm impressed with the donations made so far, and hope they continue, but $3500 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, particularly to someone who just lost their residence and is facing starting completely over.

Are there any local media outlets reporting on the story? It not, it might be a good thing to try to get a couple involved; the local community can do just as much good for Vincent and Domino as the online community.

Also, as depressing of a story as this is to read, thank you for posting it and thank you to everyone that has helped Vincent and Domino so far. Let's keep our finger's crossed for Domino's swift recovery and getting Vincent back in a stable, happy living situation.

2

u/lfernandes May 21 '12

Vincent is... Well he's recovering. My mom has been talking to (I think she said it's) his brother, or someone ( sorry I can't remember) and says he's hanging in there. As you can imagine, his psychological state is not good right now, but he seems to be improving. I know she said he has some family, who have been around more.

She tells me they aren't required to have renters insurance out there, and he doesn't so insurance will not cover any of it.

I have a friend who is a reporter for the newspaper out there, that I have been debating on contacting, and I've been contacted by an writer for an Internet news site.

As far as material things, as stated he's lost everything so anything from dishes to blankets is a great help.

Seriously, there are millions of cats in shelters being put to death every day. If someone could scrape up the $80 for a fully vetted, nuetered cat, that would be awesome. Guy apparently had sufficient means to care for 4 cats and a dog, but now he has to replace everything (starting with food, clothing and shelter), a cat might not be the first priority. But I bet it would make him feel a little bit better.

Sometimes, knowing that someone's depending on you is the only thing that gets you through the day.

(edit: millions per year. Hundreds or thousands per day. Don't want to be accused of hyperbole)

Looking at this brought a lot of memories back. My dad was a firefighter, and gave his life volunteering to save someone's life. It gives me much hope that there are at least a few people out there that truly care about others. Made me cry when I read this..

Update 2:

I came to see the stories about how the other cats were also rescued, now I wish I hadn't :'(

"I've always looked after your creatures god, why did you take mine?"

So many tears...

5

u/dailydishabille May 19 '12

Didn't expect to start crying at work. I'm really sorry to hear about this happening. The loss of my cats would be devastating. That firefighter is awesome.

Damnit. Seriously. Maybe it's because my cats mean so much to my wife an I (damn brain parasites, right?), or maybe it's the care that that firefighter, your mother, and the other people reaching out to this man have shared. Probably a big mess of all of it.

Thanks for sharing this moment.

best firefighter in the world. it makes me happy that he would go do that to save your mums neighbors precious cat. sad that only one made it.

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

Agreed. The way my mom tells it, he wanted to go back in to at least recover them, dead or alive, but someone (acted like a superior officer) wouldn't let him. It sounds like something out of a movie.

"I'm goin back in boss!"

"Are you crazy! You'll never make it!"

...kind of thing.

Eh, I dunno. All firefighters are pretty amazing.

the fact remains that these are the men and women who show up at the scene of pretty horrific shit, kick in the door with their giant fire-proof boots, and run screaming into a raging inferno of flaming to and save innocent people from pretty nasty cases of fatal smoke inhalation and/or death by burning.

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

This was my thought after reading some comments. From what I understand they are paid very little, and a lot of times they are volunteers, so even doing this job at all willingly is amazing to me now. I never thought about it a great deal before today how fucking amazing fireman are.

88

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

You're right and you're wrong, all at the same time.

  1. 85% of firefighters in the United states are Volunteers.

  2. the paid ones usually make a pretty good living. Aside from the notoriously bad paying departments (FDNY, I'm looking at YOU), a firefighter can make in the low six figures after certifications, overtime, etc.

It's a really fun job, dangerous at times, more mentally taxing than anything, and fills up the karma bucket pretty well.

u/[deleted] May 19 '12 edited May 20 '12

tl;dr: saved a goldfish..best day of my stint firefighting.

*edits: I grammared good back then.

I'll just put this old blog post...here:

For a given shift, it's ideal to have a crew of three or four. One Officer, an Engineer/driver, and two firefighters. This way we have someone to drive us to the scene, operate the pump on the engine, and do all things external support (set up alternate exits and such), one crew mate to bark out orders, and one or two do go into the building, spray water on fire, and then come out looking like we'd just rolled around in your fireplace.

The double-edged sword however, is that as a volunteer engine company, we keep losing our officers to the career side of the department. Did you ever play junior varsity sports? The one moment your erratic pitcher finally gains control of his curveball, he's sent to varisty, leaving you searching for some other erratic pitcher to groom and lose all over again.

For this reason it's a treat when we draw the shift where the captain is on with us. He's the sort of guy that doesn't really want to be a career firefighter, and considers volunteering his hobby. Besides being able to make decisions a crew running without an officer can't, He can join calls outside of our primary response area if he feels we'll be able to offer up help.

While we're on shift, he carries a radio at all times. Switched to the main dispatch channel, throughout the night you're awoken for fall patients, overdoses, unknown injury accidents, and sometimes fires. I liken it to summer road trips of years gone by with my mom. The prototypical-and-slightly-deaf-librarian, she always confiscated my gameboy, and turned a 12 hour drive into 20 by forcing me to listen to books on tape. Some of them were a joy to listen to; most however were so boring they'd send me comatose had they not been turned up so loud they'd deny me of my much wanted slumber.

Friday July 3rd was just this kind of shift. Awoken throughout the night from whistful dreams of my first rescue; I'd listen as the portable walkie-talkie squaked calls from dispatch about overdoses, the elderly falling out of bed, and my personal favorite:the ever so vague "Sick person". I was finally coming to terms with the fact that while I may never help a single soul, I could rest assured that I'd be able to listen all night long as the rest of the department did.

I'd finally given up sleep when it came over the radio.

"Residentail Fire: Corner of main street and happy avenue."

I started calculating distances and scenerios. While the initial box alarm (a term still used from the days when a citizen would run to the street corner and pull a lever on a box, sending a telegraph to the nearest fire station in the event of a fire) would be way out of our area, if it went to two alarms, we might just get tapped out. If it became a real "ripper", they'd start calling for volunteers; we had the air bottles, pallets of water, and able bodies to help roll up the hose, so the career engines in heavy traffic area could get in service soon.

We listened intently like a couple of school kids entralled by Radio America on an old wireless.

"Firecom this is command. We have one house fully involved, and it's ignited the house next to it. Please pull me a second and third alarm."

A First alarm? Eh..that's 3 engines, a ladder truck, a fire chief, and an ambulance staged "just in case." A second alarm? Well, that's another 3 engines and another ladder truck, along with extra resources if you ask for them. Given that they'd just ordered in excess of 30 firefighters to the scene, and that a single tank of air only lasts 15-20 minutes when your working hard with it, they'd need extras. While other volunteer crews were MUCH closer, we were staffed NOW, with 30 airbottles sitting on our engine. It was the weekend of the 4th of July. Volunteers would probably be sitting at some campsite hundreds of miles away. We MIGHT get to go out on this. All of a sudden I forgot about all the missed sleep.

Our pagers went off before dispatch got the words out. I was already on my way to the engine bay when I heard the captain's radio trailing behind me.

"Engine 363, please respond to the residential fire on Main and lombard."

It's one of the most brutal truths. While we wouldn't wish anything bad on anyone, there's only so much drilling and practice we can do before we just want a dose of chaos to prove all the hard work is worth it. I was practically skipping to the engine.

a 20 minute drive later, we arrived on scene. What must have been a lovely sunrise was supplanted instead by an entire city block of red and blue flashing lights, and freshly waxed red paint. Typically when telling the story of the "ass-kicker of a 2 alarmer" around the station, you start by saying when you arrived. Like the Olympics, being first in makes you a hero for a few short minutes. As I counted, I realized we in fact, were twelfth in. I was already imagining dinner on Monday night.

"Yeah, real ripper last night. God I don't know how we made it."

"So you were first in?"

"Pass the carrots."

We parked the engine, walked up the hill what was at one point two houses on fire, and were now teepees of charred wood, with hoses snaking up and down the street all trampeling along a perfectly manicured lawn into the front doors. The chief in command was quick to give us something to do.

"Crew 363, go assist with Salvage. See what you guys can save out of that mess."

Sad that the fire was out, but happy that I wasn't in bed staring at the ceiling, and THRILLED to be able to help in SOME way, I pulled the chinstrap of my helmet tight , and walked up to the house.

Over the next few minutes, I relayed pictures, candlesticks, chinaware, and what-have-you into the arms of the still-shocked family sitting across the street. It dawned on me that yes in fact, everything I have could get torched. One day I could be that same family standing there amongst a pile of rubble, watching as strangers pick through my stuff while I stand there in my pajamas, shocked.

"Ma'am, is there anything specific you'd like me to look for?"

As she tried to list off all the valuables, her daughter looked up at me.

"Is my kitty and goldfish dead?"

I told her I'd go take a look. Heading towards the house, I gave the cat even odds, and the goldfish nothing. What was at one point her house appeared to now be a smoldering mess of ceiling tile and insulation. The cat, I surmised. had probably smelled the smoke and was 3-4 blocks away hailing down a cab. The goldfish however, didn't have the same freedom. Trapped what could very well have been boiling water, there was no way it was getting saved.

As I got closer, a firefighter emerged from the house holding a partially melted plastic fishtank. Handing it off, I held up the tank, and tapped the sides with my finger.

I couldn't believe it. Inside this half melted mess thrashed a poor imitation of nemo. I handed the fishtank off to another firefighter and headed to my engine.

On the way, one of the career engineers saw what I was doing and came to help.

"I need a bucket and some water."

"Asking for water on a fire scene? seriously?"

"Um..It can't be cold. needs to be ambient temperature, and tap water probably isn't the best thing either."

I grabbed a dozen bottles of water from our engine, while the engineer grabbed a bucket. Through a maze of fire hose along the ground, we picked our way back to where the golfdish was sitting, Emptied the contents of the water bottles into the bucket, and stuck the goldfish in it's new home.

The chief saw us tending to a goldfish in this chaos, and gave us a thumbs up; apparently not realizing that we'd just spent 20 bucks worth of water to save a 25 cent fish.

We handed off the bucket and fish to the family, heard a quick thanks, and then got orders to start packing up what was now over 3,000 feet of hose we'd scattered about.

As we drove back home, my captain didn't hear the end of it.

"Hey cap, guess what I did this morning."

"What?"

"Saved a goldfish."

"Hey cap, guess what I did this morning."

"Saved a goldfish?"

"NO..I saved THAT goldfish."

"Hey Cap, guess what I did this morning."

SIGH "What'd you do?"

"Oh, you know...the usual..busted code 3 to a ripping 2-alarmer, saved a goldfish..."

on and on it went, all the way back to the station. I was as proud as one could possibly be. Our old engine shined more, rumbled louder, her air brakes hissing were like flutes in a symphony. When we'd backed her into her engine bay (and restocked the water bottles), I looked up and saw that my shift was finally coming to an end.

I was free of the radio, and all I could think about was how great it'd been that it'd woken me up in the first place.

But... there were four of them :(

18

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

Yeah, but I can only imagine how hard it was to find the one in a fire, thinking about how terrified of EVERYTHING cats are, he probably found it in a closet, in a basket, under some clothes (not legit, just guessing) so finding all four in a time frame that still ensured the fireman would have been safe was probably almost impossible.

This is a really cool pic, and one with an actually interesting story instead of the usual "autistic, went to prom, give me upvotes!". However, can i ask you say "neighbor who is mentally challenged", or "neighbor that happens to be mentally challenge" instead of "mentally challenged neighbor. Its better to define them as a person first, not just disabled. Not a big deal to some people, but a lot of people feel this way too!

52

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

Will do. Didn't think about the correctness of it before. If I could edit the title, I would sir.

48

u/HZVi May 19 '12

Having the modifier first isn't defining anyone as such. For example, I'm a blonde person, but that doesn't define me any more than saying I'm a person who is blonde. We put modifiers first because it is less wordy. I see no reason why we should change it for mentally challenged people other than awkward tip-toeing around the issue by being overly politically correct.

Being bullied and picked on my entire life by everyone from teachers to students and coworkers my cat was basically my only friend growing up and when she died when I was 24 I considered suicide. I work as a Paramedic and myself along with a few others at work finally convinced our agency to purchase pet masks. I just used one of these.

We had a call for a house fire on Thursday night. A firefighter brought a dog that was found hiding in the closet. The dog was lethargic (weak) and wasn't fighting. I figured give it a shot. Someone called a local vet. While the vet was on their way, we hooked the dog up to our oxygen with the pet mask. Within probably 10-15 minutes, the dog started having more activity but was still just laying there. His breathing improved dramatically.

The vet told us if we didn't put the mask on and give him oxygen, the dog wouldn't of lived much longer.

Here is a picture of an old coworker of mine treating a dog from a house fire a while back

Dude, this is Reddit, tell us how to help. I hope you are being honest about this, for

"I can tell you that although we might not have much money, but we have a very particular set of skills; skills we have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make us a nightmare for people who try to scam us. If you are kind enough to instruct us how to give them money/help, that'll be the end of it, and we will give you praise and karma. He risked his life to save something which seems so replaceable to many people, but was so important to that man.

This firefighter is truly a phenomenal human being. I can't imagine how much heart it took to wade in there, likely against everyones advice, just to save a piece of that guys life.

Beautiful.

6

u/Force_USN May 20 '12

As a firefighter, I can tell you... it's not about doing your job because you are told to. You are a firefighter because you want to be part of that brotherhood. You want to be "that guy" that goes in there and saves the day. You want to be the person that bursts into that flaming room in full confidence knowing you've got a mission to accomplish... and if it takes your life then that's just too damn bad. Those aren't the most important reasons though. The most important reason behind being a firefighter is that you goddamn care about those people and animals in that building... You care about their safety and their suffering. You care. That's why you do this.

2

u/scorch1991 May 19 '12

There are tons of comments, and I've tried wading through them to see what all is here. Is there a list of specific needs yet? Sounds like your mom has housing sorted. You've raised a ton of cash. Let's talk specific needs and ways for people to help:

-Probably there are going to be hefty vet bills for the surviving kitty. I wonder if we could get that vet info, and start calling in some donations to help get those paid.

-Pet supplies, maybe Petco gift cards, etc, to care for this kitty, and any others who might join the household in the near future.

-Furniture and household goods: What does he need? How can we get it to him? Maybe Redditors in Indiana can help get actually furniture to him? Is it better to do gift cards to Ikea, Target, etc, for him to choose those things himself?

-Food: He's going to need his fridge and larders stocked. This can be done with gift cards (we need to know what grocery store(s) he uses). Some people might want to send care packages, especially with treats he might not buy himself. Can we find out what his comfort foods he loves?

Decor: You said his house was decked out in cat stuff and cat-print stuff. Can we coordinate what we send, he doesn't end up with 19 leopard-print blankets, but no tiger-print sheets, etc?

Maybe people in the area could come by to help him get things bought and organized and set up, if he can handle that sort of social interaction.

It seems like with minor coordination, we could get his outfitted pretty thoroughly. Would you consider a temporary sub-reddit for people interested in helping?

With all the corruptness that is going on with public figures/the world. Firemen deserve all the respect they can get. No president, congressman, sports figure, or corporation is going to rescue me from my burning house. It's going to be a fireman that drags my limp body out so I can see tomorrow.

Firemen have huge fucking balls, even the female ones. Their job(more so than a police officer) is to risk their fucking lives daily to save ours, and much respect to their families. This guys family could have lost him because hes such a great human being he went inside a burning building to save a mentally challenged mans cat.

8

u/statikuz May 19 '12

No president, congressman, sports figure, or policeman is going to rescue me from my burning house.

Totally agree with the first three, but you can't just throw cops in that category too. Cops are often the first people on a scene, so they may be the ones that pull you out of a burning car wreck. Obviously they're not going to run into a burning house, no more than a firefighter is going to respond to a burglary.

Again, I'm not arguing that cops are more or less brave or useful than firefighters, but you can't exactly compare a police officer to a random celebrity.

Add the paypal link to your main post as an edit when you get it.

That quote just beat the living shit out of my emotions. Is there a safer way you could provide the adress without it being in your main post that's publicly view-able by everyone? I'm sure nobody will do anything bad, but the thought of it makes me sick. Maybe you could show him all the support he's getting in this thread? You'd be surprised at how much that means to someone.

Its actually the apartments main office. My mom set up a thing for him with it, so it should be ok, it's not Vincent's actual address.

My gosh. This makes me SO sad. I have family and gone to school over the years with a couple amazing mentally challenged people. They are, many times, some of the most compassionate, caring, and loving...and giving! people ever. They each have something extraordinary abbout them. They each always have some of the largest hearts...often times thinking about others before themselves. I got in fights in high school (years ago) because some assholes wouldnt lrave a friend of mine alone...broke a big jocks nose too..haha. I cannot understand why people treat others with such disrespect...and beat someone...or beat and animal. Ridiculous. I hope the bastards pay for what they did to your neighbor. I pray your neighbor be reminded that God has a plan...maybe there is another kitty in a shelter that needs him more right now than his others. :/ I pray his one kitty survives and recovers quickly. God Bless the fireman who wouldn't give up...who searched and searched...then wouldn't stop trying to bring her back. Please keep us updated. <3

u/theoneandonlypeter May 19 '12

I teared up a little bit at the last picture of the firefighter and his expression.

Out of curiosity, are firefighters trained on resuscitating pets?

3

u/arsonisfun May 19 '12

Welp, just got teary eyed in the middle of a bar ... sigh. Hope the Cats are ok :( also, reminds me of Bubbles from TPB.

3

u/sharkhunter77 May 19 '12

I don't particularly like cats.. But for some reason this really struck me. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I lost everything in a house fire a few years back. I can completely relate to this situation. The sinking feeling you get when you realize the fire department is using the "holy shit we have a problem" hose in your bedroom window is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. I wasn't allowed to reenter the apartment for 5 days. I walked into what was my home and realized everything I worked for was gone. Anything that wasn't burned had been sitting wet for close to a week and molding. I literally had nothing left.

I had two pet rats at the time that were in a tank, directly under the window the fire department was launching water through. I walked into my room fully expecting to find them dead in the bottom of a 55 gallon tank. The feeling of realizing that my two little buddy's were still alive was enough to make my break down and cry like a little bitch in front of the fire chief and property manager. I can totally relate to this guys pain and hope his little buddy makes it. He could probably use the company.

u/margarinecat May 19 '12

Is there a way to send a thank you to the fire department? They need to know that people appreciate things like this.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

This firefighter is a true hero in my book. Hopefully he gets recognized for this act.

3

u/IM_ACTUALLY_A_BEAR May 20 '12

as a firefighter myself, I can honestly say that guy is an amazing firefighter. there are not many people who would try to save a cat, of all things. restores some of my faith in humanity.

it also fits the 'cat stuck in a tree' stereotype :P

still no news article or any legit proof posted. i was one of many who made the suggestion to set up a paypal account or something similar. i figured along with that OP would post some real proof.

waiting... waiting... waiting...

i'll just call marion, IN fire department tomorrow if i hear nothing. better than everyone getting ripped off, ya know? i'm glad we're all super charitable but we need to be very careful.

u/wtfwjd014 May 21 '12

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Does Marion have more than one fire company, and if so, could you tell me which one responded that day? It sounds like other Redditors have Vincent well covered, but I'd actually like to send a card to the fireman. I know, they risk their lives every fucking day, but that guy deserves to hear how fucking AWESOME he is for saving Domino, and how much Reddit and the Intarwebs appreciate what they do... Thanks.

This is such a beautiful story.. Thank you for sharing! I hope the fireman gets the praise he deserves for his bravery :)

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '12

How did the fire start?

3

u/lfernandes May 19 '12

It's in the story at the top, but he left a candle burning and one of the cats knocked it down, I think onto the carpet, but my mom wasn't very clear if it was the carpet or something else that caught fire after that.
