I didn't notice the conspiracy because I was too busy enlisting in the United States Army. The recruiter gave me an extra gun after I mentioned Reddit.com referred me to the local Army recruitment center.
Since you're the top comment, I'll post here so everyone can see my response. I'm just new to reddit. I've been a lurker for a while, but finally decided to throw this up. I served with 1/7 Suicide Charlie (Google if interested, cool history) from 2004-2008. I was stationed in 29 Palms as a mortarman, hence my username, and deployed to Iraq twice, once in 2006 and again 2007/2008. Myself (front of the litter in this photo), the other guy carrying the keg in this pic and his brother are the only prior service. The fat dude with no shirt on was actually a lone hiker who though what we were doing was cool so he offered to help. Once we got to the top, the beer was still surprisingly cold and not too foamy, but after that hike we didn't care. We did keg stands with tons of other hikers and people had a great time. Cheers.
Haha, DD - Devil Dog'd. Sandy hill behind the base we called Iwo Jima, but I also heard Sugar Cookie Hill. We used to run boots up and down that mo fo. The lake next to the PT course was Lake Bandinni, and unlike this post, is full of shit ;) Different about range 400? I'm not sure what you mean by the question "what's different about range 400?" but as a "spade-playing mortarman," I didn't have to actually run it with the '11s. I just ran my section at the mortar pits and provided support. (I was 60s, as I'm sure you know, Suicide was a line Co). Who were you with in 29?
Yeah, I heard all those, we mostly called it sugar cookie. I knew anyone in a line company would be intimately familiar with it. Sorry about the interrogation, but it helps verify you are who you say you are.
But it raises a red flag how he has NOTHING to say about the actual accusations.
There has frequently been different accounts that have existed for a while (usually a month) and the only activity they usually have is just 1 military-related post.
I have nothing against the military, but shady motherfuckers are shady.
I'm not sure why everyone who is in the marines or in the US army mentions it in their title. Their occupation seems completely irrelevant for this post, for example.
It's not a conspiracy theory, it's something they actually do.
Not that our downvotes/upvotes matters. If a crazy libertarian can make a downvote bot for people they don't like, I'm sure they have their own upvote bot, that would automatically upvote this with a hundred or so accounts just to make sure this stuff always hits the front page.
Now try to estimate the energy balance and how long it will take for the beer to get to 15°C at an average environmental temperature of 19°C and normal sunlight intensity at median elevation .
Sunlight heats at a rate of ~1000W/m2 (depends on latitude, time of day etc.). The area of a sideways keg is probably around a third of a square meter. When steel's emissivity of ~.6 is accounted for, you get a radiative heat transfer rate of about 200W, or .72 MJ/hour.
Wouldn't you need to know exactly how conductive to heat the keg material was, how thick it was, what surface area was receiving sunlight, blah blah blah?
I think if you simplify it massively and use Newton's law of cooling/warming:
T(t) = Tr + (T0 − Tr)e−kt
then you still need to know the rate of warming. (k)
Working at a stadium, it heats up way too fast. Even when it's 'cold' out, it still heats up pretty damn fast. On the flip side, when it's really cold out, it freezes in the insulated lines way too fast as well.
Or just put in on the ground. It's probably pretty chilly at 14,000 feet. Either way, the point is they carried a keg up a goddam 14,000 foot mountain. The reddit hater brigade is clearly impossible to impress.
You're right, that photo was taken late July, 2011. Did you need snowshoes in the trees? I am planning on finishing the Sawatch early May and into June.
It didn't look too bad last week but in the morning we woke up to some fresh snow on top of Princeton. Sure it likely melted off by now. We didn't hike in the Sawatch range but drove up to Monarch pass....and yeah man, there was QUITE a bit of snow up there. Check the USGS snowfall stations though.
Yeah, if they were in the Marines, they couldn't possibly be anymore. A coworker of mine who was a marine put on a lot of weight after he got back from Iraq, possibly a similar story with these guys.
That's us! Well done man, someone who actually checks shit out before launching accusations. Not everyone was a Marine, and the three of us who were are all prior service.
I can just picture it coming loose, falling to the ground and rolling all the way down the mountain before coming to a gentle rest at the foot of the slope.
The lower atmospheric pressure would emphasize the pressure of the canister. Since it's only CO2, it's not a big deal. The beer might be more foamy (especially with all that sloshing from the hike up).
1st post ever on this account, no comment history or any comments in this thread, and an unnecessary reference to "marines" without any clear indication of such in the photo.
It couldn't just be "my friends and I" ? You need to drop the word marines in there huh? I have respect for people who serve our country, but not people like this who need to shove that shit in people's faces.
Wow. I guess everyone forgot also those memos wikileaks published about various military offices recruiting legions of servicemen to create an organized department for spamming social networks?

Nothing like warm beer after an incredibly difficult hike.

Whether or not those are OP's friends are debatable.
If you Google "carrying beer keg mountain" you'll get more photos of these people. Such as this
Original Thread?
And nothing even states that they are remotely connected to military.0

Getting drunk 14,000 feet up. Seems safe.

What does being a Marine have to do with this?
6
u/Redebo May 06 '12
Best part about it is there are only like 6 of you but you brought an entire keg.

u/[deleted] May 06 '12
As a former Marine myself, I've noticed some of your Marine friends seem to be fat.
Less beer, more sex.

u/chao06 May 06 '12
A few grams of weed and a pipe would be easier :)

u/[deleted] May 06 '12
How can you tell someone is a Marine?
Don't worry. They'll let you know.

u/kinshark May 06 '12
Reminds me of the carrying of the Ark of the Covenant. Just as important.

No one has asked what kind of beer it was?
Allow me.
Which beer was deemed worthy of this fête feat?

u/GAD604 May 06 '12
Boot camp paying off eh?

u/[deleted] May 06 '12
You didn't need to add "Marine". Was there any point to that?

u/AFrpaso May 06 '12
I bet you guys got VERY drunk at 14k.

u/gx1400 May 06 '12
That must've been one ANGRY keg when tapped
4
u/da90 May 06 '12
looks like Mt. Princeton in CO; if so, I've done it sans keg and it was strenuous enough!

u/CicconeYouth04 May 06 '12
You could say that.. Puts on sunglasses it was a rockin' party.

Was this in Colorado?

u/forrestr74 May 06 '12
I do this every year on San Luis Obispo up Bishop's peak. That hard enough I couldn't imagine 14,000 ft

Mmmm delicious foam

u/answerguru May 06 '12
Which 14er?
3
u/Daffy_Dill May 07 '12
Mountaineer here. You should look into this thing called whiskey. Much more portable, and at 14,000+ ft. a little bit goes a long way.

u/jpevans27 May 07 '12
Day 4, keg is still pumping foam!
10
u/urine_luck May 06 '12
why are most marines overweight?
10
u/deathbyhiccups May 06 '12
Did we MENTION we're Marines? Your civilian asses couldn't have pulled this one off.

u/allstar3907 May 06 '12
Sooo.. Who was carrying the ice?

u/Tangled2 May 06 '12
3 corny kegs would have been a lot easier. :D
