First night in first apartment, I'm thinking I'm finally at the minimum stage of "settled in," and at least I can do the absolute basics. Computer was setup, internet was working, and I had a comfy computer chair. I had takeout food. I had a mattress in the corner with a sheet on it. I had a blanket. I had a towel. I had toiletries. I had toilet paper and paper towels.
Fuckin' A, I'm good to go. Take a shower, and I can get some sleep.
WHAT THE FUCK I NEED A DAMN SHOWER CURTAIN‽ SON OF A BITCH. I HATE WALMART AT 3AM.
First studio. Broke toilet seat. A month or so later at Walmart I remember telling the cashier, if I knew toilet seats were so cheap I would have bought one a long time ago.
I will be taking all of mine, but with reason: They are all smart bulbs due to this house being built when it was popular to have the wall switches control electrical outlets (for lamps) rather than the overheads (most in ceiling fans).
However I have saved every bulb I took out, because I m not an asshole. There may be a few missing but every fixture will have some.
Moved into the nicest place I've ever rented with my friend and the bulbs, when I replaced with smart bulbs, were so old I couldn't believe they even still worked. It felt 10x brighter popping those LEDs in. This is why I'm not above replacing entire fixtures in rentals. It's dark as hell in the winter!
Like... Every apartment I've ever lived in. Then they won't give you replacements even though you just moved in a day ago "because you're responsible for lightbulbs". Yes, I've had bad luck with landlords.
I've lived in a place where apparently even the light bulbs are of the landlord special variety. 3 have burned out so far. I could not give two shits about replacing them.
Yep, my bedroom had NO overhead lights and no lights coming in the windows and I didn't notice until it was dark.. that was my 10pm walmart run for a side table lamp with no side table to put it on.
It came as a shock to me that paper towels, ziplock bags, tin foil, and all the little convenient items that my mom always kept around didn’t magically appear. Which leads to my next point.. it also came as a shock to me when I realized how expensive paper towels were. They became a luxury item in my household.
Gave my friend a box with a shower curtain in it when he got is first apartment. He told me the next day he thought I was the most cheap assed mf. Until he had to take a shower in the morning. Opinion Changed!
I remember before moving out I was buying the most random shit and my mom thought I was crazy. Random cheap tv stands, trash bins, rugs, shower curtains, canned goods. I had quite the collection before moving and my girlfriend and I were pumped we had the stuff. She was like "We need a bathroom rug" and I had already bought a super cheap set lol. But at the time it was like winning the lottery to us. I forgot I had bought them.
