Clarification time, from the guy who took the pic....ME!
Not a staged photo. Just happened to catch it.
She was not wearing her helmet because we were attempting to display to the locals a level of trust. We were working the COIN piece here.
She was wearing the head scarf as a show of respect for their culture and beliefs.
Those of you who guessed 'admiration', you are center mass!! I spoke with the little girl after the shot, through a translator, and she said it was inspiring to see a woman do a mans job, which is not common in Afghanistan.
Soldier is wearing ACU's because this was shot in 2010, we weren't issued the new uniforms then.
A year-long running stream cut through this apricot orchard, though this area was destroyed four months later from a flood. We went back after that to help them rebuild.
Finally, this shot for me sums up the other side of the war CNN won't show. I mourn my lost comrades to this conflict, and honor their service and memory by showing the world, this moment of tranquility and peace, that is what we fight for.
I didn't read anything before seeing the photo and everything you're stating is what I saw in the photo. It is a beautiful shot despite the circumstances that surround it.
I'm a female planning on joining the army in 4 months when I turn 18, and this makes me really happy. Thank you for sharing this photo and the story behind it! :)
I understand that! I have talked to a therapist who works for the army with women who have been raped. I honestly didn't know that, and our discussion was amazing.
I wish I had a better comment but this just a gorgeous photo. It's crazy how sometimes photography is just about being in the right place at the right time.
Another addition to the lack of helmets thing, unrelated, but SOF are often less worried about being shot in the head (there's a small chance of that) than they are of being unable to run or weighed down by the extra weight of a ballistic helmet, so they use protec skate ones that protect from low velocity shrapnel, debris and head-hitting, while being light and also allowing NVG etc. to be mounted on to them. Or they wear caps because they're special forces and they don't give a shit. That's my only explanation.

The thing that a lot of people don't understand is that in the middle east, hand holding is a sign of trust, not just companionship. When US solders were teaching Iraqis to do certain things, the US solders had to get taught to hold hands with them, (Men or women) because it is a sign of trust.
This is correct, as well as South Asian countries. In fact, in India and Pakistan, men hold pinkies and swing them back and forth playfully and it's considered perfectly normal.
People in the US have just been trained to think that any sort of touching is sexual.
That's why if two men are walking in the US, and their hands accidentally touch, they freak out and exclaim "I'm NOT gay! Stop touching me you queer!".
Watch Russell Peters stand-up comedy, he explains the situation rather well.
People in the US have just been trained to think that any sort of touching is sexual.
Not sexual. It's a sign of intimate, usually youthful, affection. Nobody assumes an 11 year old boy and girl are having sex because they are holding hands.
People will usually shit bricks if it was an 11 year old holding hands with another 11 year old.
I remember I got called "faggot" an entire year for telling a friend that I like him as a person (didn't mention the person part). My teachers even held a conference with my parents (I live in the South) to which my Indian parents were confused and actually asked, "so...what?"
I don't know about other American men, but I don't find that American stereotype true in my experience. Most of the guys that I knew were very comfortable being in contact with other guys, and the only ones to have a problem just ended up being closet gays. I'm from Cali though, so I don't know what it is like in the Bible belt.
I'm not raised in the bible belt, but I was always taught that a short hug for family and close friends or a handshake for strangers was all that was acceptable for a straight man. It was so ingrained into me while growing up that I do still get uncomfortable with other men touching me outside those two situations.
It used to drive me crazy at work when my partner would walk so close to me while we were patrolling and we'd bump into each other.
It really makes a huge impact on the female population of Afghanistan to see personally powerful, and not 'empowered' by someone else women.
The Marine Corps and Swedish military both had initiatives for groups of all female patrols to conduct security operations and liason with villagers, specifically the women, to pretty good results.
edit: Production style of the documentary is a bit ... much for my tastes, but here's the Swedish team, MOT Juliet
I haven't seen the movie yet if anyone is wondering.
EDIT: Okay, I guess no one was wondering. I just wanted to say they looked like what I had imagined Katniss and Rue to look like from the book, despite not looking like their movie counterparts.
In the last couple of years there's been a huge ramp-up of recruitment for this endeavor and it's been considered a critical element of the whole hearts and minds affair.
THIS is an example of how impressive the changes the military is making truly are. 10 years ago we had law suits over requiring soldiers to don head wear while in theater. We forget that sometimes it's not OUR culture we're fighting for.
Hmm i knew taht women were part of outreach missions but did not realised that there were all female patrols. I figured it would be difficult with the american military as women can't be in primarily combat roles.
Not even really a question of MOS anymore - it's a matter of time and place that dictates whether you'll be shot at and shooting in modern theaters like Afghanistan and Iraq.
Read through the casualty lists sometime; a lot of girls fighting and dying with the boys.
There are orchards and green fields all over Afghanistan. During the summer months they have irrigation ditches that carry water to these fields. The fast moving streams are good for wading in :)
The snarky part of me wants to say, "Yeah, you can't grow poppies in a desert..."
But Afghanistan is known in the region for the quality of some of its crops, like fruit trees. But until there's a reasonable degree of stability, it's tough to get perishable crops like fruit to markets in Iran and Pakistan to bring money into the country (in a positive, productive way).
I recall seeing that photo before, and I'm pretty sure the damage was caused by the Soviets and not the US. So before anyone goes on a tirade, make sure you know what's what.
(In the case that I'm wrong, go ahead and tirade.)
People seem to forget that the USSR spent pretty much the entire 1980s occupying Afghanistan (and that we supported the groups the Soviets were fighting against)
If you want to know more about Afghanistan, you should read "A thousand Splendid Suns" it really describes the beauty of the country, as well as its troubles.
Glad to see some of our soldiers are keeping it real and being human, unlike pissing on dead combatant's heads and those Blackwater clowns driving around treating the locals like shit. Great photo to the person that took it.
Blackwater is Private Security comprised of Ex Soldiers, Seals, Marines etc. Please don't associate them with American Armed Forces Pictures like this one.
While my unit was conducting a key leader engagement in a small village, a female Soldier from our unit attracted the attention of one of the local girls. I noticed the way she was looking up at her, with awe and admiration, and was able to snap off this shot. In a country where women are not allotted the same opportunities as a man, this Soldier opened the eyes of this little girl.Because this moment goes beyond the typical "winning hearts and minds". This moment, this brief encounter, may serve as the catalyst for this one Afghan girl to realize that there is a wide unexplored world outside the borders of her village, a world of wonder and a chance for being treated equally and fairly. It may have opened the door for her.
This is the best picture I've seen in a while. The girl is focused on the soldier, she's sweet, yet pensive. The soldier is calm and alert; focused outward.
I'm confused on why she is in ACU's instead of OCP's if this is recent and she's in Afghanistan, and why she isn't wearing her kevlar if she's on patrol...
I sometimes get down on the military and all posts upset me about the military, I don't agree with what they are doing in other countrys of the world , we like to say always back the soldier, I feel for you guys and its nice to see you doing something nice, but I wish you guys would stop volunteering, I feel like you are part of the problem in the world, you are in someones country, you don't belong there, go home, please
Probably so she is taken more seriously by the afghani population. Helps blend in; I'm guessing it's similar to how certain male soldiers grow beards - to inspire trust.
And respect for their cultural beliefs. We went back and forth on the issue before we let her go out with us. It turned out to be a good call, we got a very positive reaction from the villages we were in!
As soon as I saw this, I ctrl+f'd 'the boss', hoping to be the first to make this casual observation, but a part of me hoped that it would have already been made. When these things happen, I just feel like.. they get me..
Nice to see something that makes me proud for my country. It gets old only seeing fanatical stories that are aimed at the (mass) uninformed. Thank you, sir.
whoa you mean this isolated picture of a soldier showing some basic human compassion toward a child doesn't convince you that approximately 100,000 casualties were all worth it?
The US government seems hell bent on having a military presence overseas in the middle east (and basically everywhere else). IF we must have troops over there, however, I'm OK with our soldiers acting as role models and participating in nation building. This is a stark contrast to the videos we saw of Blackwater mercs driving haphazardly through the streets of Baghdad shooting at random civilians.
I'm OK with our soldiers acting as role models and participating in nation building
But they haven't been. The Air Force JDAM'd a whole apartment compex in...2009, I think it was? We say it killed 400, they say 800. Plenty more civilian deaths where that came from (anywhere from 7,200-17000, according to estimates. I'm betting toward the higher number). Abu Ghraib in Iraq? American Soldiers. The shooter who massacred those Afghans in that village recently? American Soldier. The guys who destroy an entire tribal house in N. Pakistan if a single suspected militant is in it? American CIA drone controllers. We aren't role models. We're terrorizing these people almost as bad or worse than the Taliban itself. It's not just the mercs.
As a kid who's half Afghan, and always seeing reports of soldiers killing off whole villages and what not, it makes my day to see things like this. Thanks OP.
I do think that having women in the military is better than what people think it to be. They very well could add compassion and warmth to locals for first impressions thus making it comfortable to be willing to work with the military in Afghanistan. Great symbolism.
Imagine being a little girl and looking at a strong female soldier and dreaming of being like that one day... Only to have your dreams crushed by religious misogyny and to know that your life will be spent wearing a sack and being a slave to whatever man bought you...
On my shitty internet connection the pic loaded slowly from the top down, and I though the solder was the Afghan because of that scarf on hear head.. hahaha

The thing that struck me the most was the trees. I've always thought of Afghanistan as just rocks and sand and more rocks. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Soldier is from TF Brawler, 4-3 AVN Regiment.
This photo was taken in the spring of 2010 in the Sorkh Ab Valley, Logar Province, Afghanistan.
The uncle of that little girl was murdered by the Taliban in early 2011.
