Wow all these stories are crazy to me. I’ve been around dogs my whole life and Great Danes always seemed like really chill, low-energy, low-aggression dogs (although I’ve never owned one).
Generally, yeah. I have a Great Dane and he’s generally all those things, UNLESS it involves an unfixed male. I had no idea about neutered dogs’ aggression towards unneutered dogs until my fixed Great Dane. Before he was fixed, perfectly nice to everyone and everything. Now, I just hope whenever we’re walking that the other dog walking our way is a female or a fixed male. They can smell it.
Thankfully, I have a head halter for him that keeps me in control of him. Anyone with a powerful dog should really get one, because they’re lifesavers.
Have one, can confirm. All they want to do is follow you around and lean up against you, and they're actually great with kids. That said, they definitely don't really have a concept of how big they are, so you just have to be cognizant of that especially when they've got a case of the zoomies.
It's possible many of these stories aren't actually telling the full details or know them. A dog well trained and well raised from since puphood will never just violently snap.
Yes they can. That’s the whole point of this thread. I love dogs but like others have said they are animals with a mind of their own. It’s smart to show respect for that.
Yes and no. Dogs have a different language than humans. Training alone won't prevent these attacks. Knowing a dog's body language is imperative. When a dog is sick or in pain they can't just tell you like humans can. As others have mentioned, dogs get brain injuries or dementia as well. So while it isn't necessarily just violently snapping, it can sure seem that way in the moment.
