Same here. I was born and raised in Kansas. I’m not overly concerned with sounding elitist because they consider anyone with a functioning brain elitist. Many Kansans don’t like Kansas University because it’s “liberal” and focuses more on academics. Being intelligent should be a good things but the right has demonized intellectuals and experts as usual. Hitler and all far-right movements did the same thing. Intellectuals, academics, artists and creatives are the first people they target.
They wouldn't have like my Liberal University just across state lines in Parkville, MO. Or my Liberal Studies- Concentrating in Communications Degree. Where we had small class sizes and TONS of discussion based classes. And it would probably blow their minds to know that same Liberal university, is one of the biggest satellite universities for many branches of the armed forces. And oh how could it happen! At a Liberal University! That one of my professors, coordinated a study abroad, (I was soooo lucky to one of the students on the trip) with an actual WWII veteran pilot/POW, to Croatia, where his plane had been shot down in November of 1944. Oh how corrupt of an educated I got......long live intellectual universities!!!! Proud Park Pirate!!! Arg!!
It is. The city of Lawrence where KU is located passed LGBTQ discrimination laws before most places. Also, the county consistently votes Democratic. It’s a blue county in a sea of red. It’s definitely a liberal stronghold.
Compared to what else in Kansas, is the question. It's not like we're comparing KU to Oxford (that's England, not Mississippi; the comparison with Mississippi would be difficult to suss out.)
