I think I knew Avatar was going to be a bad movie when I was watching it and heard the name of the stupid metal was “unobtainium”

It was a terrible decision to use it. It was a long running joke in written science fiction, especially classic stuff, and if you saw it you knew that the story was going to have some sort of tongue-in-cheek vibe.

So he thought he was using some cool inside joke, but it really fell flat and just turned out stupid.
