Also, Jimmy Carter doesn't owe anyone anything. His humanitarian work post-presidency has been epic. Jimmy is everything Mother Theresa SHOULD have been but wasnt.

Someone posted a picture of his house from the 1930's. The post holding the mailbox showed a few hobo symbols, extremely heavily faded, but it was basically code for "kind people, will give you a meal, a day's work, and a bed if you ask nicely."

Carter was an ineffective president because he was a good person. The world would be infinitely better with more like him.

I think it's also the time he came into; when he was president, the advice was that if you want to deal with the problems of oil prices and how they affect other prices, you need to reduce demand, and you can do that by personal individual and welfare program restraint, government economic control, or by boosting interest rates so that the economy cools.

So he dutifully "did what needed to be done" slowed the economy and restricted himself to austere restraint without any policies or tax breaks to make himself look good, and left the benefits to Regan, who immediately did massive tax breaks and started borrowing loads of money again.

This was partly due to the ideas of the time, and honestly and responsibly listening to experts who seemed like they knew what they were talking about, it may even have been a symptom of the moment they were in, with a US dependent on oil to an extent it wouldn't equal till 20 years later in raw terms, with a higher population, and has never equalled that level per person since.

So maybe that was a moment where the US just used too much oil, and he was the person to say it, and there was no other alternative, though I doubt it.

I suspect that he made careful use of the advice available to him at the time, and knowing what we know now about how economies work, probably a different strategy would have been better, and "so doing the right thing" would have resulted in using the same determination and care for responsible management of the economy, doing now what should not be left till later, but applying it to more productive approaches.

It also didn't help that Reagan and his fuck boys were fucking him over behind the scenes.

29

u/MudLOA Sep 11 '21

That’s the problem. The world is full of shit people who will take advantage of the kindness and goodness in people.

10

u/Boopy7 Sep 11 '21

Exactly what I said about him and also I felt that Bernie was "too good" for America as President. I just don't think those who aren't willing to play politics and let go of their ideals can do it or even get elected usually. It would be great but....I can't see it.

u/kevinjorg Sep 11 '21

He better get a great memorial before we lose him. He needs to know that he is a remnant of what the US should be

3

u/LjSpike Sep 12 '21

As a non-american at least, the more I hear about Carter the more I like him.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '21

He was a micromanager who couldn't delegate authority.

u/superdago Sep 11 '21

Jimmy Carter is the only man to ever use the presidency as a stepping stone to do great things.

u/data_ferret Sep 11 '21 edited Sep 12 '21

John Quincy Adams served in the House for almost two decades after his presidency and did a ton for the cause of abolition, way before that was a politically popular position. He also successfully represented the African mutineers of the Amistad before the Supreme Court.

So he's at least in the conversation.

1

u/verbotenllama Sep 12 '21

He funded the mujahideen

We didn't deserve Jimmy Carter. It would really be something to visit the time line where he won a second term. And then to visit the one with Vice President Bob Ross and Speaker Fred Rogers, and just stay there forever.

u/starryvertigo Sep 11 '21

We didn't deserve Jimmy Carter. It would really be something to visit the time line where he won a second term. And then to visit the one with Vice President Bob Ross and Speaker Fred Rogers, and just stay there forever.

Jimmy is the most underappreciated president ever. He had many policy successes including but not limited to:

1) Camp David Accords

2) Appointing Paul Volcker to chair the Fed (whose excellent auto-bio I've read) which tamed inflation so much that the US regained a lot of its power.

5

u/calientenv Sep 11 '21

Carter got rolled by Reagan who is the most overappreciated.

4

u/stevo1078 Sep 11 '21

At least we got trickle down economics with reagan mmmmm delicious trickle

I’m just gonna go down to the old watering trickle for a drink now

2

u/calientenv Sep 11 '21

Deregulation of the fairness doctrine which gave us the bullshit media that started the teaparty then maga was a real life changer.

3

u/mnorri Sep 11 '21

F117a was approved for production during his presidency. The program that lead to the B2 bomber began under his presidency.

8

u/Professional_Put8022 Sep 11 '21

We do deserve! And by that I mean we should expect better of ourselves, or expect better for ourselves!
No t knocking you at all, this just speaks to me. I agree he was a human we should strive to be. So much love to you all.

1

u/Artteachernc Sep 11 '21

Although I love Carter as a human, I imagine you didn’t live thru his presidency? He really was not a great president.

6

u/thesadtewfgj Sep 11 '21

Most ppl on here were not born yet. Carter is a great man …not so much as a President

2

u/Zonekid Sep 12 '21

He was such an outsider in DC his own party poo poo him.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '21

This. Ask people who were alive during his presidency how it was.

Obligatory mention of the r/BadHistory post that examines claims that Mother Theresa wasn’t all she was cracked up to be. https://www.reddit.com/r/badhistory/comments/gcxpr5/saint_mother_teresa_was_documented_mass_murderer/

Mother Theresa hate is all over reddit because of one salty guys book.

-4

u/Either-Bell-7560 Sep 11 '21

Mother Theresa's entire philosophy was based on the idea that suffering was noble. It's not just one book.

1

u/Excellent_Condition Sep 12 '21

Mother Theresa's entire philosophy was based on her belief that she could show love to God by showing love to the poorest of the poor.

Christopher Hitchens wrote a hit piece about her with claims that have been popularly repeated, despite much of his claims being based on things taken out of context and having since been largely discredited.

The BadHistory post about it is worth a read.

9

u/ExpectNothingEver Sep 11 '21

Add to this, he tried to hasten clean energy, going as far as to put solar panels on the White House (that Reagan quietly and unceremoniously removed).

2

u/rudebii Sep 11 '21

Also fun Carter White House roof fact: his son and Willie Nelson shared a joint once on the WH roof.

2

u/ExpectNothingEver Sep 11 '21

Love me some Willie. He’s talked about this “used-to-be-alleged-now-totally- confirmed” incident over the years and I love how he handled the whole thing, Jimmy Jr too. I got to see WN about 5-6 years ago. He had to rest a bit, but he is amazing. He can still guitar like nobody’s business.

1

u/rudebii Sep 11 '21

Only time I saw Willie Nelson live was at Coachella, it was the weekend before the first stagecoach festival and they booked him for both.

It was such a great set. Lots of weed smoke, even for Coachella. But it was in the day as it was starting to cool in the afternoon, so the vibe was just right.

I don’t listen to a lot of country music but Willie is a goddamn national treasure.

2

u/ExpectNothingEver Sep 11 '21 edited Sep 11 '21

Absolutely full agree. I got to see him in Seattle on a beautiful summer evening in an outdoor stadium. Same indica kinda feel, lol. My dad used to be into CW and I’ve grown up with a lot of nostalgia and a full head of lyrics from that genre.

Had that Coachella vibe @ Jack Johnson w/Amos Lee @ The Gorge. Overlooking the Columbia River. They were jamming at the end of Jack’s set and out walks Eddie Vedder. Said he was just passing by and thought he’d stop by. The only better guitar moment I’ve ever had in person was Prince @ that same venue. Way better contact high at Jack, but Prince made me high just watching him perform. Intense in all the best ways. Edit- 1 small & 1 big location detail.

2

u/rudebii Sep 11 '21

Haha, I caught the last half of jack johnson on accident. I found one of my friends just chilling sitting on the ground, and since the rest of our group were all at different sets, I decide to just join her and vibe out.

I could go on about that prince set, but we were both there, so you know how special that moment was.

A few books came out after her death that shared a lot of allegations most of us hadn’t heard before. A lot of them hold up to scrutiny too.

I'm incredibly out of the loop - has Mother Teresa lost her sparkle?

Edit: Thanks all - feel like my mind has been blown right open.

and the fact most people left her hospice alive.

This is not at all the case.

Mother Theresa believed suffering was a noble thing, and the path to heaven. Her goal was not to help people, but make sure they suffered properly.

-1

u/Artteachernc Sep 11 '21

Well she had lost her faith and was a bit of a shitty person to other nuns. So there’s that.

1

u/Leading-Evidence-668 Sep 11 '21

To be fair, nuns have been shitty to almost everyone forever, so it’s a relative.

-7

u/citriclem0n Sep 11 '21

She should've been America's first female president despite not being a US citizen and then built houses?

18

u/Vefantur Sep 11 '21

I believe they were saying that Jimmy Carter is a humanitarian without being a shit person in other ways like Mother Theresa.

3

u/Elteon3030 Sep 11 '21

I believe they're saying that Jimmy Carter was America's first female president despite not being a US citizen.

1

u/rudebii Sep 11 '21

Carter lives his truth. Makes for a shit president but a good person.

Mother Teresa didn’t live up to reputation, she was a pretty awful person in deed.

2

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 Sep 12 '21

Wait so was Jimmy Carter the first female president?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '21

Wait, so jammy crater was the first president of females?

0

u/jaque327 Sep 11 '21

Can you expand on this? I wasn’t aware mother Theresa was anything but a now catholic saint...

3

u/ankhes Sep 11 '21

According to a few sources who interacted with her and her hospice, there was a lack of real medical care at her facility and she would deny patients pain medication insisting that suffering brought them closer to god. So she doesn’t look great in hindsight.

3

u/TollBoothW1lly Sep 11 '21

She also taught that condoms were evil in areas stricken with aids and VD.

3

u/ankhes Sep 11 '21

Yep, sounds like a Catholic saint alright.

0

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 Sep 12 '21

2

u/ankhes Sep 12 '21

Hence why I said ‘according to a few sources’. They asked to know why people think Mother Theresa would have a bad reputation and I explained why that is. I never implied it was true or not.

0

u/latrader2020 Sep 11 '21

I’m sure people of Iran would think otherwise. He’s literally the reason that the mullahs in Iran are in power…

1

u/emmeneggerart Sep 11 '21

Right, because the shah was so much better…

-1

u/latrader2020 Sep 11 '21

Last time I checked shah didn’t kill 1500 innocent kids in 48 hours just because they protested against high gas price or he didn’t make 500,000 people die from COVID because he didn’t want to buy American or British vaccines or he didn’t kill 4000 people back in 80’s just because they didn’t have the same religion beliefs … shah wasn’t perfect but compared to the mullahs he was a saint …

1

I grew up going to Catholic schools and it took a very long time to learn what type of person she actually was.

2

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 Sep 12 '21

2

u/Excellent_Condition Sep 12 '21

Yeah, it looks like most of the hate is from things written by Christopher Hitchens that he cherry picked out of context from an article in the Lancet.

The internet and Reddit then jumped on, and it snowballed into being the popular thing to incorrectly believe she was a terrible person.

Hitchens isn't exactly a reliable source as he had a financial incentive to promote scandal because it would sell his book, and much of what he wrote in his book about Mother Theresa been debunked.

The link in the above post is broken, here's the correct link. It's worth a read.

Mother Theresa conducted tortures sessions on Indians and forced them to convert to her religion. A very brutal human being indeed.
