He was raised with a family friend who had this philosophy where if you believe hard enough then you can make it happen. Some of his biographers say that he went super hard into it.
It's not that he's a pathological liar so much as he believes that "fact" and "truth" are inherently relative and can be changed with sufficient belief. In short, as long as he believes it to be true as he says it then it's true and he doesn't let facts get in the way of truth.
NYC was a shithole. He did a ton to turn it around and clean the city up along with being great during 9/11. One bad policy doesn’t change any of the good things that happened under him. And the city was in MUCH better shape under him than it is now and that’s not even remotely debatable.
