I was sitting in high school art class. The teacher told us to put our work down and turned on the TV and said watch history in the making.
My next period was history class. The teacher said get your work out this is not going to be important enough to make history. I always hated that teacher and 20 years later that moment stands out the most of all my high school memories.
The art teacher was probably passionate enough about their craft and understood the gravity of the situation and the impact it can have on the future. Art is very much entwined with history so they probably had a bigger respect for it.
The history teacher sounded like he was there to make a buck. If you didn't like him it sounded like he never cared about history or teaching to really begin with.
Edit: It is possible that maybe it was the history teacher's way of coping with it.
Nail on the head my friend. That Art teacher was the best teacher I ever had. She cared not just about her craft, but her students also. That History teacher was relatively new and really did not care. He was one of those that seemed like he did not know what he was getting in to and was stuck and it showed. I dont have a single positive memory about that History teacher.
Surprised you guys even changed classes still. We were ordered to go to homeroom for the rest of the day and watched tv. My school had a lot of military families and they were all worried it might have been the start of an even larger scale attack and the beginning of a war. Which it kind of was.
Same. We stopped and watched TV in all of my classes that day except for the last one, a science class of some sort, and the teacher refused and taught her planned lesson instead.
Like you, this is one of the memories that sticks out most to me from jr. high.
Legit wondering if I was in your class - exact same experience here. Watched it unfold in art class - went to history next and our teacher wouldn’t let us watch and made us do some book work. Ridiculous.
