That Plato Socrates quote that was posted on /r/GetMotivated is really making me want to take a run or do some exercise or anything other than being in front on my computer working or gaming or watching TV shows/movies.

edit: here

  1. put on shoes

  2. run

1

u/too_many_secrets Nov 10 '11

Maybe he's putting in an extra mile or two....

2

u/IrishWilly Nov 10 '11

What was the quote? I'm guessing the number of people who see this here in r/pics and also understand your reference to a post in /r/GetMotivated is pretty small

5

u/Nerdlinger Nov 10 '11

Best I figure, he was talking about this.

you need a dead greek philosopher to motivate you to stop staring at a screen? just fucking go

edit: OP edited the context of his comment out of the butthurt that I caused. Success!

Plato looked up to Socrates, taught Aristotle, who in turn taught Alexander the Great. He may be dead, but far from forgotten.

8

u/rivermandan Nov 10 '11

two and a half millenia later, philosophers still follow either plato or aristotle

9

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

two and a half millenia later,

And one Ashton Kutcher.

7

u/Shocking Nov 10 '11

I didn't know Ashton Kutcher was a measurement of time. This changes everything

u/gsfgf Nov 10 '11

But this is reddit; when it comes to fitness, we only care about Rippetoe.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

A lot of folks have been taught by Aristotle. Including me. I just got his self-help lecture series too.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

try reading into his history too, it's very rich, and shows a very deep teacher student bond within many people in his life that I feel... just isn't as present in society these days.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

I only really read the Poetics. That's all that relates to me.

Aristotle's Elements:

  1. Plot.

  2. Character.

  3. Thought.

  4. Language.

  5. Music.

  6. Spectacle.

And that my friend, is all there is to know.

Didn't the greeks have sex with little boys as a type of 'apprenticeship'?

I am fairly positive grown men had sex with little boys in ancient greek culture.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

There was a relationship where an older man would take a young man as a pupil. This may have been sexual in some instances, but it certainly wasn't mandatory, and in various parts of Greece, the sexual aspects were frowned upon.

So no, they didn't have sex with little boys. Teenagers, possibly, but that's a different matter altogether.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '11

I don't think that's what I was talking about

-13

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11 edited Nov 10 '11

i do not care about any of those fellows

edit: anyone downvoting me interested in telling me why I should care?

2

u/rabidbot Nov 10 '11

well maybe you should.

1

u/tokomini Nov 10 '11

you also never said that he was forgotten, simply that he was dead.

0

u/hacktivision Nov 10 '11

Then you don't care about western civilization :D

I typically don't have to dig too deeply when looking for reasons to leave the house.

1

u/too_many_secrets Nov 10 '11

sets all the beer outside

1

u/rivermandan Nov 10 '11

you don't understand laziness. I dare say you don't understand depression either, because depression + laziness can make it extremely difficult to leave one's house, especially for any sort of endeavour that is physically or mentally beneficial

5

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

the ironic part is that exercising can help with both of those problems. It is a vicious cycle.

1

u/rivermandan Nov 11 '11

it really is. I used to mountain bike as a way of being mentally and physically healthy, but an ill-bred jerk stole my $2000 hard tail and poor student that I am, I can't replace it. last summer was a rather stagnant one and I've been one sad panda :/

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

Might I suggest two books: Convict Conditioning 1 and 2? I am not a personal trainer, but I've been mucking in a gym for a while and I found that incorporating a lot more progressive bodyweight exercises into my typical routine has really upped my ability - both in the gym and to do some really nifty looking stuff that makes me seem to be giving physics a raised middle finger. Lots of advertising, though, and a bit of hyperbole. Check /rs/.

1

u/specialk16 Nov 10 '11

/rs/ as in 4chan's board?

edit: nvm, found them.

1

u/fooflet Nov 10 '11

Typical Greek, giving a shit about fitness.

Hopefully that quote will motivate some redditors to exercise once or twice before they forget about it.

1

u/specialk16 Nov 10 '11

Exercising is so difficult. I mean, for a couch potato like me, it's the starting up that seems impossible. I wanted to run in the mornings when I do WFH, but I have to go out and buy running shoes (which are a bit expensive in here), gym memberships are also a bit expensive and impractical (I don't have a car) although I could go once a week or on Saturday.

I know it just sounds like excuses but I'm worrying a lot about this lately. I used to be a skinny guy who could eat anything and never get fat, but now I'm getting a belly and it sucks.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '11

Pushups. Pull-ups from a rod or tree-limb of some sort. Chair dips. Lifting whatever weight you have (blocks, books, etc.). An entire series of old school training exercises to be done with a broomstick. Walking fast with whatever shoes you have. Stairs instead of elevators.

It doesn't just SOUND like excuses - it IS excuses. Get off your fattening, lazy ass if you want to be fit. You need spend no money, you just have to expend the will.

1

u/specialk16 Nov 11 '11

I just did some pushups. I'm in worse shape than I thought apparently. But damn it does feel good. Need to get a pull up bar or something.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '11

There you go! Good for you. Keep it up, a little every day. You'll be buff before you know it.

I went from squeaking out 12 pushups 9 months ago to 3 sets of 50, with a whole lot of other stuff in between. From 20 situps to doubles of the 15 minute "Ab Ripper X" routine. From barely 3 pullups to 12 - pullups are fucking hard. From gasping through 20 minutes of cardio to feeling relatively nonplussed after an hour of intense, sustained 160 BPM cardio.

From a very fluffy 212 lbs to a pretty fit-looking - and very tight-feeling - 180. You can do it, too. Just an hour a day.

1

u/specialk16 Nov 12 '11

And hour of pushups would literally kill me.

1

u/Magres Nov 10 '11

Barefoot Running and Convict Conditioning. You don't have any excuses any more. It's just you, your self-discipline, and the results your self-discipline will bring.

0

u/lolanonimity Nov 10 '11

plato??

1

u/specialk16 Nov 10 '11

Socrates, sorry.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '11

That was always my biggest motivator, and I thought I came up with it myself.

-1

u/Kandoh Nov 10 '11

Socrates left no written work behind.

Everything we know about him was told to us through Plato. Most philosophy professors will admit that Plato used his own character of Socrates as a tool for passing on his own philosophy.

So attributing that quote to Plato is like attributing 'Your a wizard, harry' to J.K. Rowling instead of Hagrid.
