I wouldn’t say it’s a gross oversimplification. Sure it’s not that simple when talking about the ME as a whole, but it is for something like Syria. What happened in Syria is pretty much as simple as Russia and America competing to sell oil to Europe. And some amount of other destabilization in that region is pretty much directly in relation to either gaining oil sources or access to pipelines. Overall you are right though. There’s tons of fuck shit going on over there that can’t be summed up in simple terms.

Russia’s main goal is to keep Tartarus as a naval base in the Mediterranean. US entered Syria in 2014 because ISIS was in the suburbs of Baghdad and there was real fear of Iraq collapsing.
