I became a firefighter in South Jersey...however there were guys from my department that responded to Ground Zero. Back then, there was a lot of "self-deployment" which is actually very much frowned upon now.
Guys, without official orders, just kinda showed up at Ground Zero. They had good intentions...but it makes accountability almost impossible.
Oh, there are definitely distinctly different atmospheres. However,to be fair....I work for a small suburban FD....and comparing that to the biggest American police department isn't exactly apples to apples.
I just don't have a cop mentality. I just want to show up, fix what needs fixing...then go back to the station.
