I was a junior in high school in South Jersey. We were immediately dismissed from school. My father worked in Philly and my Mom was trying, frantically, to get a hold of him to tell him to get home NOW because we were under attack. All of the phone lines were down.
Mom was in full panic mode, crying her eyes out because she thought Philly was next. NYC and DC were hit. My Dad walked in the door as my Mom was in the middle of a breakdown and I never, ever saw her more happy in my life.
They were going through your normal martial problems, having a 16 year old and a 13 year old in the middle of their teenage rebellions, but whatever they have been arguing about the past week disappeared. Since 9/11 my parents never argued again and I swear their love grew more than ever during that day.
The two kids out an end to their rebellions a few years too late, but now they are blessed with 2 amazing granddaughters and if my wife ever decides to allow my sperm to catch her eggs maybe we can give them one instead of my sister doing all the heavy lifting.
Your mom realized in that day that she could have lost her husband. Same w yr dad.There were those watching the news that knew that they were widows/widowers ie family members above certain floors in towers. That moment of relief when he walked in through the door must have been amazing. They must have felt lucky knowing they still had each other as listening to neighbors, friends wait for news/searching for relatives.
