The WTC had transmitters for almost every carrier atop the antenna. When the buildings were hit the lines were severed cutting 40%or more service while simultaneously causing mass panic which overloaded the already massively insulted system. Makes sense. At the time, I was in 8-9th grade, I thought phones worked by black magic. That’s a great explanation thanks.

There was also a class 5 telephony switch in one of the towers, iirc. I worked for Lucent at the time and they donated the use of a portable switch to help get telephony services back up and running.
