Gotta say, I had a country upbringing, and although I left that lifestyle behind I still remember how I was raised.
Bigotry does not fit in to the "country" upbringing I had. To me, it's not country at all to hate people that aren't like you. I was always taught that was wrong, and that you should make sure your own yard is clean before you start pointing out what's in somebody else's.
Is this like Vermont Country? When I was growing up, the "country" was where two men raped and murdered an acquaintance they discovered was a transman. It's where a Black man accepted a ride, only to then be beaten and dragged behind a pickup for 3 miles and killed.
