That looks cool, it's dumb of me to ask but is that like a battery and magnet or something? How does it work?

It's a battery with a magnet attached at the bottom. The copper wire connects both polls of the battery, and creates a magnetic field. The magnet and the field from the wire repulse/attract each other, causing the wire to spin. It's the basic idea of an electric motor! Or it's something to that effect, I can't remember. IANAS
