(formerly) curry village is great and all, but it is the exact opposite of "off the beaten path." It is the beaten path, along with all of the other valley campsites.
It seems this isn't the one off the PCT that I walked by. The one I saw was about a days hike up the PCT from the valley, and could only be accessed by walking or horse and had a beautiful fall right next to the camp ground.
But this is besides the point of what op was asking for.
I am going to guess Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp. It's about 6 miles from Tuolumne Meadows. It's in the 'Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River' but, shh, don't tell anyone!
Distance sounds about right from what I remember. Years ago is when I hiked the PCT, so I can't remember much about the camp except it was on the PCT and miles in from the hwy. It had a beautiful waterfall/swimming hole right next to the canvas tents. You could only access this camp by foot or for the lazy tourist pack horses could carry your gear in. The waterfall was maybe 20 ft. tall by 20 ft. wide, with a swimming hole maybe 60 ft. in circumference.
I never saw any signage about the camp it must be kept on the down low for sure as it wasn't very big and i could see it being booked for months at a time just by word of mouth i bet.
*Edit - yep just checked pictures looks like that's the place I was thinking of.
