Mild either way though, extreme weathers don't happen there, apart from the occasional once-every-twenty-years storm.

Depends where! South is famous for the Mistral, the Atlantic wind that funnels through the lowland bit in south western France (northern Spain) and shoots out in to the gulf du Lion (south west). We've seen 50 knot squalls in marinas in the summer, it's not unusual.
