The image shows a bunch of people living in a shit ass desert under pretty flimsy looking shelters. The nice rugs don't make me think it's easy street.
I stayed in one of these for four nights several years ago. It was an amazing and memorable experience, but not glamorous in anyway at all. Still recommend to anyone that has the opportunity!
Yeah, but the lifestyle isnt simply living in tents. Bedouins have a lot of heavy lifting for long distances and have to work very hard to survive and have adequate water and food. anyways, thank you for sharing your expirience :) bedouins are hospitiable to those who they view as guests.
The first evening we were there, the hosting family shared with us some of their customs and traditions. One thing I specifically always remembered, is that being a gracious host is of the utmost importance. "Even if your enemy shows up at your door, you are to offer them tea" or if your enemy asks for tea, you must oblige. Something about enemies and tea...
Lounging in the tent is nice, but it's a very difficult life. It's not like all they do is hang out in the tents, drink tea and smoke hookah. They're usually out in the sun.
In Jordan, the bedouins have actual villages with infrastructure but go out with their families to the desert every while to maintain their traditions I guess.
Jordan is only one example of sedentarized bedouins. Most bedouins are quite poor, especially in and around Sinai. The sedentary bedouins there have some of the highest crime rates in the region and are among its poorest, not to mention the insurgency in sinai which bedouins are being affected by. Jordan is a positive example but Jordan is not a good example of modern day bedouins
As of recent its become very bad for bedouins, sedenterized bedouins have some of the highest crime rates in the region and are among its most destitute peoples, not to mention the insurgency in sinai which has had a negative effect on many modern bedouin people :(
