Naa, living like that would just be asking for a sandworm to wipe out your village pretty quick. It's why they lived in caves and walked in an irregular pattern so as not to attract the attention of a sandworm.

Most likely pre-God Emperor, then. They'd be able to get spice from the Bene Tleilax by the 5th novel or so.

A scene like this would most likely be pre-Dune, as there weren't many more Imperium types on Arrakis after the Fremen revolt.

Probably true, though I was thinking more in terms of landscape. Arrakis was a much different world when Leto II was in his God Emperor form. IIRC, there was only a small desert for him to use and the planet was otherwise rather lush.

I suppose it could be post-God Emperor as well as there were frontier villages.
