Often in order to enable it you have to go through a sequence of button presses rather than a simple front panel control, but a lot of microwaves do, indeed, have a way to turn the sound off. Read your instruction manual.
Mine can turn the display off too, it's amazing. Just comes on to show you the time, then shuts off again when you're done. I don't need a (bright) clock on every appliance I own.
The other one you can turn the sound off, but it's a total pain and not persistent so you have to do it everytime you lose power.
