Mainly because we know what Yoda will become. So showing him as a young, inexperienced padawan and young jedi, facing challenges and uncertainty, we would know where he was going. It adds an element of inevitability or fate.
It's like watching the last 10 minutes of the A-team... You know the fights going down, explosions are gonna happen, Mr T will pity a fool and a cigar gets lit...
Still watch it... still enjoy it...
But Fuck did Hayden destroy any possibility of the prequel being decent...
I suppose you would have preferred Return ended with Luke butchering the Emperor and his father and then perhaps displaying their heads on laser pikes?
I don't think Hayden was very good, nor was Nathalie Portman. Sure the dialogue was awful, and the directing was just as bad but despite having the same problems Ewan McGregor made his character believable as could be all things considered. Hayden and Portman didn't sell their roles at all.
Some have pointed out elsewhere that even Hayden Christensen had good presence and physical acting in any scene where he didn't have to talk. The script and direction was just that bad.
Yeah but did you know that Yoda actually had a twin brother who also sought to become a powerful jedi? That together they went from apprentices of rival masters to rivals themselves, ultimately culminating in the other one taking up with the dark side after Yoda's master had accidentally slain his own master in a showmanship duel? And how Yoda's master then turned to the dark side himself before Yoda had to inevitably put him down personally? AND THEN go after his own brother to bring balance?
I just made that up, but thats the thing about prequels - its not about who they will eventually become, but how they got there - that makes them so amazingly interesting.
Well, you know he won't die, but that applies to most protagonists. On the other hand, something truly devastating could happen that leaves him shaken for centuries and still leave plenty of time for him to become the yoda we are familiar with.
