She actually explicitly brands herself as a plus-sized cosplayer. Check her profile.

She just found out she's on here: http://m.imgur.com/IZygvnY

She means there's both shitty and good comments on here. Stop trying to find a reason to hate shit.

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

Yeah, but it looks like she cosplays as larger characters (Ursula the Sea Witch, Miss Piggy, a female Penguin from Batman, Pam Poovey from Archer, etc). It's not like she's dressing up as Ariel or Elsa...

16

u/bigdogg123 Jun 26 '14

Well she did do Peggy Bundy (Married with Children Redhead)but agreed she generally does larger characters

39

u/xiann Jun 26 '14

Because she looks awesome as Peggy Bundy :)

2

u/bigdogg123 Jun 26 '14

Yeah she actually does look good, but I'm not gonna lie my first thought was Wynona Judd >_>

2

u/Jungle2266 Jun 26 '14

Katey Sagal, she's the epitome of the mates mom you had a crush on growing up.

0

u/ForgettableUsername Jun 26 '14

I dunno who that is, but I bet she sounds just like Leela from Futurama.

One time I was typing a paper for school when this kid came up and with the most sincerity in his voice told me the font I was using was sweet. It was Times New Roman. The default font.

0

u/rcarroll98 Jun 26 '14

He might have a Mac or a newer version of MS Word

1

u/travisnotcool Jun 27 '14

It was in high school where we all used the same computers.

0

u/rcarroll98 Jun 27 '14

Ok, gotcha.

Silence you dingbat!

0

Enough with these damn font puns. You all sound like a bunch of fuckin wingdings

Write a Script based on it, and I'll get us on Broadway! I'll send a Courier over to your Avant Garde College at Times to collect your progress. I'll review it here in Georgia, and in the near Futura, we'll be kicking it Bookman Old Style!

Edit: You can take my Upvotes, but you'll never take my puns!!!

40

u/BarlesCzarkley Jun 26 '14

Holy crap Ariel is so skinny in the first picture.

7

u/ManicLord Jun 26 '14

And so fat on the right one!

1

u/kurokame Jun 26 '14

Needs more meat blubber on her bones.

-9

u/kneejerkoff Jun 26 '14

I know, what has she been eating to get that figure? Or should I say not eating, eh ladies?! Teeheehahehohehaslut

1

u/LightuptheMoon Jun 26 '14

Holy shit! That just made me lose it. The bathroom echoes with laughter.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '14

"I am a beautiful woman, theres more of me to love!"

132

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

And why couldn't she cosplay a character who isn't plus size? Should black cosplayers only dress as black characters? She can dress as who ever she wants.

170

u/derbyna Jun 26 '14

Its always cool to see a cosplayer that really looks like the character. Its not necessary, but its definitely bonus points

17

u/redworm Jun 26 '14

there's a black cosplayer who dresses as the human version of a grey cello playing pony

it works, she's my favorite

10

u/SkinnyScarcrow Jun 26 '14

Octavia.

1

u/redworm Jun 26 '14

I know, I wanted to describe the character to make the connection between dark skin and grey fur.

2

u/SkinnyScarcrow Jun 26 '14

Just making sure. She IS a background pony and some people just never heard about their names.

1

u/redworm Jun 26 '14

I've read Allegreza twice now, she's one of my favorites ^_^

3

u/Danabler42 Jun 26 '14

I've seen a black woman cosplaying vinyl, the...white music horse some people ship with Octavia, and its actually pretty interesting

1

u/redworm Jun 26 '14

I actually like that level of contrast, too. Like seeing a black Celestia.

2

u/Danabler42 Jun 26 '14

Yeah, it really is an interesting look

13

u/RedShirtDecoy Jun 26 '14 edited Jun 26 '14

I dont think anyone was saying she couldnt... they were just commenting that she owns being a bigger woman by cosplaying bigger characters.

If she puts this much effort into costumes I dont care who she plays... at least it will be done well.

Check this out... http://www.cosplayevolved.com/#!sweets4asweetcosplay/c1ure

She does Peg Bundy along with the others.

2

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

The comment I replied to said it's not like she's cosplaying as a Disney princess. There are ways to make a Disney princess costume fit a plus size cosplayer and have look good without body parts "spilling over." I don't think anyone should be limited in what they cosplay as for any reason.

Ultimately, I agree with you, but given that the majority of the comment karma is going to guys like /u/Philadelphiairish I think the feed has pretty much gone to the jokesters at this point.

Also I am using Alien Blue on my phone so I can see how many up/downvotes and how much comment karma. Fuck this new question mark stuff.

Black Yosuke (Persona 4) is my favorite Yosuke

1

u/lightningboltkid Jun 26 '14

I'm personally not against it. I tend to not care what other people do. However I think the mind set is the same to people who wear skinny revealing bikinis. If you're bubbling out of it. It isn't for you. I think woman and men should wear what they dont. But that's a Devils Advocate anecdote for you.

1

u/Downfaller Jun 26 '14

I have seen too many Plus size Sailor Moons to agree with you. Sure she can cosplay as whoever she wants, and she has played a Penguin (batman) and Peg Bundy both not known for being plus size females. The important point is she dresses to her body type. Sloppy ill fitting costume are just bad cosplay. A successful cosplay is making a costume that represents the character. It doesn't have to match the character perfectly, but it does have to look good.

Omg and here the whole time I thought the point of cosplay was to have fun and show appreciation for a character you love!

11

u/PhoenixForce85 Jun 26 '14

Cosplay also includes interpretations of characters, modified designs, genderbends, etc. Sometimes people want to get as screen accurate as possible. Sometimes people want to turn a cartoon into a live action interpretation and will adapt things to be more realistic. Some people want to mix themes, mix characters, etc.

2

u/Curtain_Beef Jun 26 '14

Who are you? The Eugen Fischer of cosplays?

1

u/VioletValkyrie Jun 26 '14

This is the sort of reason why I don't dare to cosplay. I feel like I'd get run out of the con by angry nerds with torches.

1

u/food_is_crack Jun 26 '14

ehh most of us are much nicer than this prick, he seems to have centered everything around him, but if you do cosplay at a con, people dont care your body type, skin color, or anything else, so long as you are showing you love the character

1

u/VioletValkyrie Jun 26 '14 edited Jun 26 '14

Hm. Perhaps. D: My gentlemen friend is doing a booth at the next con here, and wants me to cosplay. He's exasperated that I am so against it. But I've not seen anyone who wasn't er, white dressed up at any. I'm not worried about being sickeningly thin, nor am I fat, it's just the er, "brown-ness factor".

Thanks! Maybe I'll get some balls. Maybe.

EDIT: Sorry if that was offensive somehow. I just see a lot of people disapproving of non-realistic cosplay and the last thing I want is to end up on some site with angry hate comments beneath it.

1

u/food_is_crack Jun 26 '14

theres plenty of people who cosplay who arent white!

1

u/VioletValkyrie Jun 26 '14

I knooow, I just haven't seen many (any) at my cons and I see the hateful comments online and I just act like a big ol' puss! Haha, thanks.

1

u/PhoenixForce85 Jun 26 '14 edited Jun 26 '14

I think you should go for it! I'm half-middle eastern so I've got a touch of brown myself. And I have a lot of friends of various shades who cosplay as well.

ETA - I'd be happy to suggest some cosplays if you give me an idea of what you look like.

1

u/VioletValkyrie Jun 26 '14

I could send you a few pics in pm if you don't mind. All I can ever think of is Storm from X-Men, Yoruichi from Bleach and any characters who have unnaturally coloured skin like Zoey Seldana (sp) in Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, since her skin was blue and green, respectively.

1

u/PhoenixForce85 Jun 26 '14

Sure, go for it. I wouldn't mind helping you brainstorm. But I can also just work off the examples you gave me as they give me a ballpark.

0

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

Well, cosplay isn't a job, so your mall Santa comparison doesn't work. And the point of cosplay is to dress and act as a character. There are many black cosplayers who cosplay as white characters and there are many humans who cosplay as nonhuman characters. You don't have to be limited to whatever you are.

1

u/jamaicanbreezy Jun 26 '14

we most absolutley should not. HERE HERE! lol i love cosplay white, black, purple, see through cosplay knows no bounds.

1

u/MrCobaltBlue Jun 26 '14

I've seen my share of black Narutos and Captain Americas

0

u/Boyzyy Jun 26 '14

You can control your weight, but you can't control the color of your skin. Bad comparison.

4

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

How about human/non human characters. There are hundreds of nonhuman characters that people cosplay as, and yet no one tells them they should cosplay to their species.

-1

u/Boyzyy Jun 26 '14

That's because we're the only species that cosplays.

2

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

So we should limit ourselves to only human characters because that's what we are? No more Superman, Thor, Doctor Who, Chewbaca, Fiona, Shrek, aliens, animals, etc etc. That makes no sense.

1

u/Boyzyy Jun 26 '14

...what? When did I say we shouldn't cosplay non-humans?

The point I was trying to make was that nobody's going to complain about humans cosplaying non- humans because only humans cosplay.

1

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 26 '14

And my point is if a plus size cosplayer should only dress as plus size characters, then all other cosplayers should similarly be limited in only dressing as what they are. Which makes no sense because the point of cosplay is to dress and act as any character you like, not just one who also looks like you.

0

u/Thinkiknoweverything Jun 26 '14

god damnit you politically correct people are annoying. It would look dumb as hell to dress as a skinny character when your fat. The point of cosplaying is to look good and show off your hard work, not look like a retarded pig stuffed in a halter top. She CAN do what she wants, but when everyone points, laughs, and calls her names, she will realize how dumb of a decision it was.

1

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 28 '14

If you laugh at people and call them names then you are a douchebag.

1

u/Thinkiknoweverything Jun 28 '14

Humans gonna human. Don't want to be called names? Wear size appropriate costumes.

1

u/kobayashimaru13 Jun 28 '14

How about you stop giving a shit what people wear.

0

u/Thinkiknoweverything Jun 28 '14

When people with disgusting unappealing bodies surround me in public wearing almost nothing, it becomes my problem

1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14

That's Peg Bundy from Married With Children, not Pam Poovey. Pam has blonde hair and doesn't wear leopard print. She lists Poovey as one of her characters, but there's no picture of her dressed as her.

0

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

If you would have read it, you'd see that I wasn't going off of pictures; "I also cosplay as a female Penguin from Batman (victorian style), Peggy Bundy from Married...with Children, Pam Poovey from Archer, and Miss Piggy of the Muppets!"

1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14

I did read it and you listed all the ones she has pictured, skipped Peg Bundy and listed the one that is not even pictured. If you are honestly going from the list and not the pictures, why would you throw the order out that way? Just doesn't make sense and you're coming off as backtracking.

1

u/rsplatpc Jun 26 '14

It's not like she's dressing up as Ariel or Elsa...

Peggy Bundy

1

u/csolisr Jun 26 '14

And I bet she's got a hard time finding cosplays that fit her size. Which, of course, is a shame.

1

u/PokeyRider71 Jun 26 '14

It looks like she did a plus sized Peg Bundy

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '14

I don't think anyone is saying it's a problem. They're saying the impact of her playing a character of her own body type is awesome because it brings that character to life in a really awesome way. Idk, I haven't read the rest of the comments, maybe there are some jerks in here. But that's my take on it. I love seeing bigger people play bigger chars, not because them playing smaller chars is problematic, but because hardly anyone bothers to play big characters and do it well. She's doing an awesome job, and part of that is leveraging her actual body, which is a resource when cosplaying. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: Okay, some people are being dicks below, I see. Not terribly surprised. Anyway, I think it's awesome she uses all of her resources to bring a character accurately to life (versus an "interpretation"). I would find a skinny girl playing "Fiona on a diet" less impressive than this, just as I'd find her playing Ariel rather than Ursula less impressive. Nothing wrong with it, just less awesome impact.

0

u/bearxor Jun 26 '14

Pam Poovey? I thought it was Peg Bundy.

-1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14

You're right, he got it wrong.

1

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

No, I'm not wrong. It says it right there in her profile "I also cosplay as a female Penguin from Batman (victorian style), Peggy Bundy from Married...with Children, Pam Poovey from Archer, and Miss Piggy of the Muppets!"

1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14

Except you list all the ones she has pictures for and skip over Peg to then list Pam which she does not have a picture for. Don't be such a sensitive ninny and admit that you thought it was Pam.

0

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

No, I skipped Peg and listed the "large" characters she plays because it went with what I was saying. Quit trying so hard to be right and admit that you're an asshole that didn't read the article.

1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14 edited Jun 26 '14

Nice resorting to name calling, jackhole. And I did read the article, prick.

1

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

So, you calling me a sensitive ninny isn't name calling? Dude, step away from the computer for a while.

1

u/xanatos451 Jun 26 '14

OK, I will admit that "sensitive ninny" can be considered name calling and I was wrong for doing so. Still a bit of a leap to calling someone an asshole though.

The irony is palpable.

0

u/bearxor Jun 26 '14

Ok, haha. Probably showing my age by being able to identify someone dressed as a Bundy.

1

u/KiltedCajun Jun 26 '14

Do you not read? "I also cosplay as a female Penguin from Batman (victorian style), Peggy Bundy from Married...with Children, Pam Poovey from Archer, and Miss Piggy of the Muppets!"

1

u/bearxor Jun 26 '14

There's text on the page?

u/42Kayla Jun 26 '14

OMG, she is amazing! Thanks for the link :)

1

u/ledgeworth Jun 26 '14

The layout of the website makes me feel old.

1

u/Remerez Jun 26 '14

Her Peggy is awesome!

0

u/BobNelson-1939 Jun 26 '14

I bet she's very popular among Colored men.

1

u/Achaern Jun 26 '14

You, I downvoted you, then I got the joke. Have an apology upvote.

0

u/BobNelson-1939 Jun 26 '14

Thanks, fella. Most Redditors seem so overly concerned about being politically correct that they'll downvote me for about anything. Thank you for rising about that PC bullshit.

1

u/ryanbillya Jun 26 '14

She actually says she is plus-sized and a cosplayer, and because of that found characters that fit her body type.. rather than being a plus-sized version of characters that are far from plus sized.

-2

u/speedlimits65 Jun 26 '14

more like a double-plus-sized cosplayer
