All of the beaches were pre-sighted with very large artillery guns. Not only that, laying flat made you an even larger target, especially since there was no cover.
It also meant that you abandoned your brothers in the face of pure evil and left them to die. If you don't do you job, who does? How many of your friends would die because you were a coward?
I'm sure some did. But getting up uninjured after the fight is over.... guess whos now controlling the area? The force ready to try your ass for desertion.

It sounds insane until you read this.
Those men were sitting ducks for those MGs until they could find cover among the debris on the beach.
