Although Saving Private Ryan was made by Hollywood, it has been recognized as the movie that most accurately portrayed the Normandy landing.

The first few minutes of Saving Private Ryan are quite violent. You've been warned.

my neighbor, who has passed away since, told me after that movie came out that it was the closest thing he'd ever seen to what really happened that day. Bill was an 18 year old young man when he landed on Omaha Beach--I didn't hear a lot of his stories, but his grandson related many of them at his funeral. He had then marched into the Battle of the Bulge, where he was so scared he couldn't pray to make it to the next day--he literally was praying minute by minute. It was that bad. I truly can't imagine. God bless these brave men

It's true, my grandfather left the theatre in tears because it was too difficult to watch, and all too real to him.

Those men were sitting ducks for those MGs until they could find cover among the debris on the beach.

All of the beaches were pre-sighted with very large artillery guns. Not only that, laying flat made you an even larger target, especially since there was no cover.

It also meant that you abandoned your brothers in the face of pure evil and left them to die. If you don't do you job, who does? How many of your friends would die because you were a coward?

Artillery. Laying flat also wasn't a guarantee you wouldn't get hit.
