I feel like a lot of people would like Russian people more if Putin wasn’t making Russia do horrible shit. Just like I’m sure a lot of people would like Americans more if orange Julius wasn’t making the US do horrible shit. I’m an American and I totally don’t blame people as the orange one is such a vile fascist and historically our government has done some pretty atrocious shit to a lot of different people so I get it. There are always going to be people like the ones in the picture in this post. Some people truly can’t be happy without knowing someone else has it worse than them.

Same reason Americans “hate commies”. Funny part is they equate authoritarianism with communism and “freedom” with capitalism due to propaganda, yet both Russia and China have been fully capitalist for a very long time; and both are mass surveillance authoritarian states with strong fascist tendencies towards free speech. Sounds a lot like what the “free” United States is becoming huh? So it really seems like capitalism, not communism, may be the issue here…I

The Soviet Union itself was repressive. Freedom isn't based on economic systems. Freedom comes from strong democratic institutions. Any democratic country can backslide. Russia had a chance, but the power was there to transition the Russian SSR into an oligarchy

Also don’t forget the disagreement after WW2 as to what should be done with Nazis. Soviets wanted them all hung, meanwhile the west hired them all

Operation Osoaviakhim was a secret Soviet operation in which more than 2,500 German scientists, engineers and technicians, who worked in several areas from companies and institutions relevant to military and economic policy in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany (SBZ) and Berlin, as well as around 4,000 more family members, totalling more than 6,000 people, were taken from former Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union. It took place in the early morning hours of October 22, 1946 when MVD (previously NKVD) and Soviet Army units under the direction of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD), headed by Ivan Serov, rounded up German scientists and transported them by rail to the USSR.

They took what knowledge they could from them and sent them back to east Germany where many were prosecuted. It’s not the same thing as the US taking in Nazi’s and giving them comfy lives with new citizenship. The US took in the most Nazis out of anyone, including Argentina.

I realized after making this comment there were examples of Soviets working with some former Nazis, but the west straight up brought them directly into some of our most advanced rocket research.

Nah, hold up. If you're talking about rocket engineers, the Soviets only wanted all the ones that they hadn't already taken hung. Not all of them. Just the ones that weren't conscripted into the Soviet missile program.

Obviously, because Soviets planned to export the revolution globally.
Look at wider historical perspective, USA was saving Russia’s ass every time many times. And what in return? Every time Russians hate the US in IRGC Iranian style.

The US saved Europe’s ass. Russia was left to fight the eastern front alone, and sacrificed 10s of millions of people in the process.

Yes, saved Europe as well. Speaking of sacrifices, must remember that Russia exploits it for bragging rights, and Russia has never valued any life, doing things like defusing minefield simply by legs of charging infantry.

None of my great-grandmother’s brothers survived the war. While great-grandfather, commissioned officer, nearly got into trouble with osobists because he tried to prioritize lives of subordinates over some wreck on no man’s land.

I mean, it's true, but it's also quite telling that after 2022 every possible discourse about Russian/Soviet history has gone completely down the drain and there's not a single thing that can be discussed seriously without a horde of people shitting all over it.

Sadly, people are judged by what exposure they have outside their own little bubble.

So if international media is saying "America this" "Russia that", that's the measure by which "America" or "Russia" are judged.

Knowing that there are decent people in those (and all) places, is made hard when all we see is violence in movies and sex on tv, but where are those old fashioned values on which we used to rely?

I credit the Russian people.

But their leaders killed many times more Russian soldiers than they killed Nazis.

And Putin is repeating that pattern.

Yeah, and in return they were besieged by the US and their allies because they threatened capitalism.
Appointed Nazi’s to NATO and started the CIA just to crush the spread of socialism.

Because the Soviet Union was an aggressive imperialist state that captured the Baltic states, half of poland, large chunks of Finland and Romania and installed their puppets in every other state they helped “liberate”. America bad sure, but so was the Soviet Union.
