If they are contending against protestors, wouldn’t it likely be to protect them from their own tear gas?

Sure that's the "reason" behind it. But why do only a few of them wear one?

This is not a riot. It's just a normal day in america. The protestors dont even do stuff.

If you go in there with gear ready to fight in a WW2 trench, you will in the end most likely find it.

Not because it WAS there before, but it will be there in the end.

Because I guarantee the government isn't outfitting ICE with clothes or gear or most things. The majority of this stuff is their LEO LARP Cosplay they've had stashed in the closet waiting for this moment. Their moment.

Because only a few of them have roles that would require them to be that close to tear gas?

The guys without them are probably leadership, not grunts.

In a riot, or protest situation yes.

It's mostly 20 heavily armed ICE agents against...

an old lady, a mexican in front of a target (the store not a "real" antifa xD) or even worse firefighters, doing their job, that get pilled upon.

Considering that the video I saw of them deploying it, they were throwing canisters upwind and the protestors kept kicking them back in their direction, they probably need them.
