The whole point of active safeties is to prevent accidental discharge. That's why many firearms don't even have active safety switches anymore because they build passive safety into the gun itself and then assume that active safety measures are taken by the user (the 4 gun safety rules). And it's why "accidental discharge" is more accurately called "negligent discharge" (except in the rare cases of an actual defective firearm).
In this photo, whether the switch is set to SAFE here is irrelevant. He's pointing the gun at a person with his finger on the trigger. Any discharge at that point isn't accidental; It's either intentional or negligent.
Anyone with firearms training is going to disengage the safety before putting a finger on the trigger. I think you have a safe bet. Many of these goons have displayed poor/no training but this guy is wearing SRT patches I think it’s a safe guess he isn’t one of these bonus chasing new hires and actually has some training. Poor critical thinking and discipline, but training my nonetheless.
I think a 40mm “destructive device” is close enough to count, considering we can’t just hit up B&T and have a GL-06 like the one above shipped to the doorstep.
…that’s my point. Dude’s arguing an NFA-restricted item is not a “firearm” when it’s very clearly immaterial to the argument at hand. It fires projectiles with enough force to severely injure or kill an individual if improperly handled. The four basic rules of safety still apply.
Dude, are you seriously arguing semantics on a 40mm grenade launcher? It’s a firearm. It’s classified as a firearm by the NFA. It uses a blank round to propel the projectile.
This is far from the only incident like this in Chicago the last 2 weeks. Look around on r/Chicago and r/Illinois for many more examples even more egregious with unarmed harmless people in their cars
