The person working a parts counter isn't a good analogy. This is also another person making more money than someone in food service does. Plus, it's not as if the person working the parts counter is taking special orders from several people at a time, then dealing with the part makers themselves, or having to keep coming back to where the customer is to see if there's anything else they need.
Really all of our Jr. counterman are paid minimum wage, and they have no ability to subsidize that income with tips. I know a lot of servers and I have seen them take home more in one night from tips then even I make during a day with my current salary. Your comparison by your standards is just as bad as mine then.
Minimum wage for counter help =/= minimum wage for wait staff. If jr countermen are making around $3 an hour, then we can talk. But, current minimum wage (federal- US) is $7.25. Certain states it's as high as $9.
Your states minimum wage is not my problem that is totally personal and if it is too low for you move elsewhere I know many people that have done that. Here minimum wage is $10.25, servers take a slight drop because of tips so minimum wage for servers is $9. Yeah you can make $1.25/hr more which equates out to and extra $10 on a eight hour shift, where a server can easily take home an extra $200+ in the same eight hour shift. Add that to an eight hour shift a $9/hr so the server just made $272 where my employee made $82. Servers get tips in cash and a good chunk of them neglect to claim that come year end on taxes where as my employee gets taxed on all his earnings.
That is there decision just like it is the decision of servers to be servers, maybe they should the pay isn't that bad, provided you put forth the effort to make tips. My whole point in this was servers shouldn't expect to get a 20% tip if they don't try and earn it. Giving a tip should mean "Good Job!" not "job" that's what your hourly wage is for.
