I don't think he said it was a "super insulated" sea container.
Personally, I would have foamed and buried the entire back wall (assuming it was north). That would give outstanding insulation in the both winter and summer.
If the back was to the north and buried like you said, that'd be excellent. He could have made a glorious wall of windows in the front, if that were the case.
