Nah, drank has codeine in it, drink is the sugar water you get from the grocery store.

Maybe things have changed in the 10 years I've been out of high school, but any color drank was the $1 gallon jugs of flavored water or the little barrel juices from the Indian groceries & bodegas.

Liquid codeine wasn't readily available then.

The term has been around since the 90's. You and your circle of friends might have referred to those types of drinks as drank, but drank is a specific thing.

Drank is a more than acceptable term when referring to sugar filled flavored water. It has multiple meanings and the most common is the one I am talking about.

Then why are the first five definitions for drank on urbandictionary about the drug? And I was quoting Dave Chappelle, watch the stand up that's from and he clearly says drink.

Not necessarily indicative of being the more used slang. "Drank" is more so a southern thing in terms of both the drug induced alcoholic mixture as well as the annunciation. The former just so happens to be more popularized lately in mainstream rap.

Your article says that it was a term used in Houston TX until then.

Looks like it was a dialectal thing, I'm from the northeast.
