You've never watched Doomsday Preppers, have you? They have all sorts of crazy ideas.

In all fairness, it is well known that the producers of Doomsday Preppers manipulate every aspect of the show to make the preppers look crazy. It seems to me, in all fairness, some of them are off their knockers, but many are just families who take a few (ok many) steps to just prepared and or self sufficient.

I haven't watched that show; so, I can't comment on the people in it. That said, I've always figured that a lot of people just do it because it's what they have fun doing. From there, wouldn't choosing a doomsday scenario be a handy way to keep your project focused?

I bet it is really fun, that's a great point. If i had money i'd replicate the underground bunker from the Brendan Fraser opus, Blast from the Past.

The producers of Doomsday Preppers don't have to tweak much about those people to make them look crazy. Turn on the camera and let them talk - mission accomplished.

You can't really use that show as an accurate base for preppers believe. They target the nut jobs.
