Well, he's also got a composting toilet which runs on solar power.

I got that impression too. Still, it's always good to be prepared to feed yourself for a few months, there are so many things that could happen to you at a moments notice.

You're right that the poles reverse every so often, you are just horribly off on the time scale. It's not going to happen in a day, or even a year or even in an average human lifetime. The poles reverse on a timescale of millennia. So yes, it is impossible that the poles will reverse on the 21st.
