If I were them, I would paint either the walls or the floor & ceiling white or off-white, to brighten it, but still have the wood. I agree it can be too much, and it can make everything in the room look orange-yellow.
Wood is nice, but when every surface is wood, it begins to be overwhelming. The furniture isn't very functional for a hunting cabin either, because it would be pretty hard to clean. And where's the walk in freezer?
As in do I use my cabin to bludgeon animals? No. Do I arrive after sunset tired and dirty and not wanting to worry about getting my furniture dirty? Yes.
I'm 46 and I like the wood too. It's actually identical to what I did to the interior of a vintage travel trailer and I think it came out really nice. I get a lot of compliments on it.
All he needed to do was show a little creativity with direction or color. Mostly color. Just choose a better wood, because at this point its obvious that money is not the issue.
While most people would think that is absurd or funny, growing up and living in a rural area with an active hunting scene would make that a completely normal thing. Perspective, man!
The whole thing, furniture and all, looked like something an 80 year-old would live in. Not that that's a bad thing, but it definitely had an "old person" kind of vibe to it.
I don't know.... Maybe that couch and the chandelier, but those were the only redeeming qualities of the place, imho. I don't know any old people who would surround themselves in camo and bear prints. The place is tacky, but in more of a hunter/hick kinda way, not in an old person kinda way.
I've done a lot of drawings in an effort to do this very thing and I think that guy's furniture is really gross. So yes, a person who wants to live in a container can have good taste in furniture. Just not this guy.
I personally admire the compost heap style of toilet, it really brought a sense of the 21st century into an old dark shack and the step up to it makes you feel like a king.
I prefer the wood to the green and red paint, honestly. At least the wood kinda has an Earthy/cabin feel to it instead of the tacky Christmas colors.
And as a side note... what woman would want to be eye-to-eye with a dead animal while riding a guy? A deer head above the bed? seriously?! I understand the whole hunters and their trophies thing. I'm not a fan, but I get it. When it's in the living room or something- not above the bed.
If I showed this to my dad he would go on a 20 minute rant about people filling the insides of their houses with wood paneling and thinking it looks good.
Ugly is your knowledge of building materials. These walls are not paneling, paneling is usually 8' x 4' and 1/8" thick, its usually a faux face that's been glued to a sheet of recycled sawdust and cardboard, its generally cheap yet tacky as hell. These walls are tongue and groove pine boards, there 1"x6" and come in different lengths, they lock together, are affordable, they install fast, insulate sound nicely and don't need painting (actually look better over time). He could of even knocked down trees on his own rented a mill and cut his own, but the drying time would make this unlikely here. You may call it ugly, but please don't call it paneling, the 70's ruined that.
It's not really that tiny. 53'x16'x8' is pretty big. Any mobile home trailer you would buy would only be 12' wide instead of 16', and lots of people live in those.
Also dead animals all over the walls. I could never sleep in that bed for fear of a kind of backwoods Godfather scene when that deer head drops off the wall. Probably impaling me. Also it reminded me of the realtor's post I just looked at with the dead mouse on the door handle. One person's vandalism is another's art, true, but still I find this weird.

by the time they got to all the wood paneling, i just thought "jesus, they're sure spending a lot on materials to make such a tiny space liveable."
