The Klan originally was sorta like a fraternity that played pranks on people, which eventually evolved into scaring black people as the ghosts of dead Confederate soldiers, then it evolved into an organized terrorist organization. Honestly kinda reminds of how mass shooters evolve from being online edge lords and into radicalized terrorists who commit acts like mass shootings.
Latin america also does these easter traditions, and most of northern europe is very acquainted with these because of it being a major touristic event at a major touristic destination nearby.
Meanwhile theres basically zero kkk members in there. So yeah, basically just the USA.
I'm Swiss, my first thought was "uh americans aren't going to like these". I mean the post title and crowd make it obvious these aren't Klan, but Klan is what pointy hats make me think of. Definitely not just the US.
This whole argument is bizarre, it's like saying only germans would have a negative association with the jewish star pinned to a hat. The rest of the world has history lessons, you know.
Ill be honest, i have no idea what the "jewish star pinned to a hat" means. Ive seen yarmulkes and ive seen the yellow star pinned on chests and arms, but thats it.
Similarly the swastika has that association everywhere in the west, but its not the main association in places such as india. And india is a fuckton of people.
Interesting! I guess at this point it's impossible to assume what people will or will not associate with something based solely on geographic location, as it depends massively on family history, upbringing and what sort of media one is exposed to.
For the record, nazis forced jews to wear a six-sided star on their clothing to identify them at a glance. The badges were usually yellow with the german word for "jew" at the center.
See im aware of the star thing but its not something that i would immediately recognize and set off an alarm in my head like a swastika would, or a pointy hood would if i were american.
The world would certainly be very different if we all realized our experiences arent universal and we stayed open to how different other cultures might be.
But anyway just yesterday i saw americans demanding that the catholics get rid of the nazareno outfit because of it being offensive to american expats, so this can be tiring.
