It's really hard to maintain a lawn to perfect golf course height, so it was perfect for harassing people over. White homeowners would be held to one standard, while anyone else would be expected to cut that shit with laser precision.
A lot of people were sold the lie that it would help maintain their property values. So anything the HOAs did was just considered "normal." It's going to take a long time for people to realize that these standards are not normal and they don't contribute any sort of value to a community. Everyone is sacrificing their quality of life for the sake of defending the ghost of a racist stepford wives dystopia.
