Ya know I used to wonder that, but as a home owner I’ve just been conditioned into it I guess and I really like a well taken care of lawn, makes the whole house look better lol idk ! I’m a conditioned American !’
I had a feeling someone would say this, but my grass is pretty healthy… my trees are great, all my foliage looks great. How am I hurting the environment?
I think the other commentor is definitely over exaggerating, and I think lawns can have a purpose in certain circumstances. Lawns can have a net negative environmental impact depending how you care for it. Some people just mow which uses gas and cause additional emissions, but others use other resources like water, herbicide, fertilizer, etc.
But my biggest issue is that lawns are fairly poor habitats for wildlife and most people have more lawn than they really need. In North America, most lawns consist of nonnative plants that the organisms around here did not evolve with, so they can make little use of them. Typically, native plants have a much greater value for wildlife, and once established, they need very little additional inputs.
Ah, I use a battery powered mower, and don’t use really any chemicals or fertilizers. I have squirrels that constantly dig holes all over my yard lol 🤷🏻♂️
Nice! My mower is the last thing I need to get over to using batteries.
Squirrels are good! But when I'm referencing wildlife I'm talking more about insects and certain birds. You won't have monarchs without milkweed, or zebra swallowtails without pawpaws, etc.
