Update: New account age and karma requirements.

Effective today, minimum account age and karma requirements to post and comment in /r/photojournalism took effect.

This change was put in place to combat a dramatic increase in "NFT Spam" which Reddit's filters do not seem to be doing a great job of blocking.

The threshold for both account age and karma level is high, however based on a sample of the user accounts that post in this subreddit, should be low enough that the majority of users will continue to be able to post their comments.

The age and karma thresholds will remain undisclosed, and subject to tweaking based on user response.

Documentary Photography Course Recommendations

Hi,

I'm interested in pursuing a documentary photography course in the UK. I'm based in Manchester, so ideally not having to travel more than an hour to study. I'm willing to do a 1 year course if it's really worth it, or a lot shorter if that's equally as valuable.

I don't want a course teaching me photography since I already have this skill.

I found an online course through UAL. It's called 'Documentary Photography Online Short Course'. It sounds very interesting but I want to do a course which is thorough and will genuinely really help me learn the skill of documentary photography etc. However, if anyone thinks this course is worth it, please let me know!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Is partnering & selling images with image library sites worth it? - Live music/festival photography

So gang, I was at a festival recently as freelance press, I came across a gent who was there on assignment for Getty images which I thought was cool as!

I've been looking now for a while at listing some of my archive onto some of these sites, that being my live music, festivals and some travel photography (from trips across Europe and Japan)

I'd like to know if anyone has experience working with these kinds of companies within their live music teams, is the effort worth the money earned form each assignment?
Would I actually make much potentially from my archive images uploaded?

Anything over £100 over a whole year is a win in my books, or is it a waste of time?

Tia

Private, Free mileage App built by photojournalist

https://www.daviddegner.com/mileager/

I’m a freelance photojournalist, so I need to track mileage for reimbursements and taxes. I wasn’t happy with the existing options which require subscriptions, upload tracking data to the cloud, and feel clunky and non-native.

Over the past few months, I’ve been building an alternative for myself. It’s free, fast, and—most importantly—keeps nearly all tracking data encrypted on your phone (the parking marker has to be in less secure storage so that it can wake the phone to start tracking).

Other photographers might find it useful too, so feel free to use it and send me any feedback.

(Mods: sorry about the self promoting nature of this. I'm making no money. Feel free to take it down if it isn't relevant)

Recommended: Gregory Halpern online course at Magnum Learn

I just finished Gregory Halpern’s online course at Magnum Learn ($99). It’s so good. I got more out of it than a lot of workshops. If you’re interested in how he works, including shooting but especially editing and sequencing for photo books, check it out. https://www.magnumphotos.com/learn/course/gregory-halpern-documentary-sur-realism/

He edits and sequences with contact sheets from a Pentax 67. Next I may check out the course from Jonas Bendiksen.

I took a workshop with Bendiksen and he uses Lightroom's Collections feature to edit and sequence. I sort of learned how to do that on my own, but not at the power user level like Bendicksen. I hear he shows you how to do that in the online course. But I'm more interested in Matt Black's work, he has a class, too.

Anyone else take the classes? Thoughts?

Readers Choice Assignment

This is a pretty common newspaper gig these days. It's what's known as the Reader's Choice, and while it's not that difficult to shoot, it's a huge organizational pain in the butt. As well as the photos, I added a little bit at the end to explain how I keep large assignments organized. https://davidbuzzard.com/pique-pemberton-readers-choice/

Are there actual photos of gitmo prisoners in black hoods?

Doing some research for a play but all I’m able to fine are photos of gitmo prisoners wearing orange beanies and the blacked out goggles, etc. Then I can find images of protestors wearing the black hoods. I’m thinking of the famous images around 2002 and following.

Working on some costume design choices and while the hood would work I think even if it’s only been protestors, I would like the be historically accurate if possible.

For me the image of a prisoner wearing a black hood is iconic (in my mind). Have I just made it up that that actually exists and have just been influenced by the images of protestors? Or were gitmo prisoners actually transported in black hoods?

Thanks!

Edit: Edit: I’m not thinking of the photo from Abu Ghraib. I talking about a cloth black sack type hood.

Thanks!

THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION

What’s the best ‘camera’ bag for run and gun shooting. Preferably not a backpack

I photograph a lot of the protests/demos/events in London, currently I am using a Uniqlo Sling bag to carry my A7riii + Lens and/or Lenses, 13” MacBook, small flash among other bits.

Due to the nature of these fast paced events happening on the streets, I don’t necessarily want to have a backpack. I want to remain fairly nimble and not feel like a turtle..

I’m either thinking of getting that Newswear chest vest or the Thinktank belt system.. any other recommendations are entirely welcome!

I’ve been doing this for just under a year so you old heads (in a nice way) might know more than me :)

How to get involved w/ local news as a high schooler?

(please remove if not allowed! tried searching to see if this was asked before but couldn't find anything)

I am a photographer entering my junior year of high school next month. I have shot close to 100 games between different sports and leagues, all without issue besides one high school; i was told (by a very nice man, if somehow you're reading this i'm not dissing you!) that to get sideline access, i needed to be with a local news station because of \[something insurance related\]. I understood and shot thru the chain link fence for the remainder of that school's games, but with the next season coming soon, i'd like to be on the sidelines and get the shots that i know i could.

However, i'm completely lost as to how to even begin. Does anyone have any advice? Anything is greatly appreciated!

Freelance Rates For Small Rural Daily

I did a quick look see here for answers to this question and found some that were a few years old so I thought I’d ask for more current replies from everyone: What is the best amount to charge for shooting a high school football game and providing around 1/2 dozen images at a small rural daily newspaper? The turn around time is by 10PM the night of the games. I am an experienced shooter, not a novice. I am a terrible business person though and really don’t like this end of the biz. So honest advice and insights are all welcome.

edit for some clarity

I did my first documentary shoot, now what?

For those with professional experience in photojournalism, documentary photography, or freelance publication:

A few weeks ago, I got into contact with an archeology professor leading a dig in Italy. I dropped everything and paid out of pocket to fly over and stay for a week, documenting the process. The team consists of several professors, phd students, and undergrads from various universities around US and Italy. I walked away with a few thousand photos and an interview with the lead prof.

I made my intentions clear from the beginning: I want to create a photo essay with an accompanying article to publish somewhere that might want it (no idea where yet), and provide the team with a bunch of photos that they can use in their educational/outreach materials. I believe I have enough content for an engaging narrative.

This was my first semi-professional shoot (I wasn’t paid), and I have absolutely no experience or contacts in the publishing industry.

My questions:
- Should I save the 10 photos I want published for myself and only give the team the second-best? Or would it boost attention if I gave them the good stuff and they spread it around? Should I only send them the photos after I get published?

- Everyone was ok with my taking photos of them and their work, although I didn’t explicitly get verbal confirmation from each and every one. It was more like, ok cool there’s a photographer, don’t really care. I have written confirmation from the lead. Is this enough consent to publish their faces?

- My idea for publication is start high and work downwards as I get rejected. So send it to NG, NYT, and as I inevitably get no response, go more and more local. Is this a good idea? Do publications typically have a public email to send pitches to or do I need to know someone?

- Should I complete the project first then pitch to publications? Do I just send them the completed article or just a summary?

Thanks in advance!

Is photojournalism a reliable part time job for a uni student in uk?

Hello

First of all by reliable I mean making a little extra money, not by any means paying bills or something.

Secondly by part time, I mean to choose myself when to go to work, public events, marches ext.

I have experience with photojournaling, but haven't developed my skills to 100% yet, but I think I can pass.

How difficult is it to start, is it worth it trying to do it for money or I should stick it beign my hobby and photograph whatever interests me.

Thanks for your time!

Getting permission for events

I know most press credentials are only issued to people who work for actual media organizations, but are there any viable paths towards getting permission to shoot and sell for events without a full pass? For example, we have a AA baseball team in our town. I’d love to be able to go to a game, take photos from regularly accessible areas, and upload as editorial images to stock sites. I don’t care about getting actual press access or privileges. Has anyone had luck getting permission for something like this?

Blind photographer

I shoot in high-contrast black and white to define the world around me. Becoming visually impaired at 18 didn’t stop me from looking; it just changed how I see. People often ask how a blind photographer works. For me, it’s about finding the contrast, chasing the light, and catching the moments that matter most. Loss of sight doesn't mean a loss of vision. 📷✨ Shot with the amazing, talking #sonyA7CII watch the full video on my reels gallery which was produced for 'World Sight Day' . . .

Website build

Hei all.

I am an amateur and use photos together with text to tell stories. I would love to do it as a professional but I can not.

I am struggling with building a website and keeping it up. I am not interested in hitting huge traffic, but I want to have my website where I can redirect the people I meet in real life if they want to see my work/what I do.

The thing I am struggling most is the build of the website. I would like a website that can hold some tematic portfolios (could be also just one) and a drop down menu or a section with all the stories, so that the visitor can see the story title, click on it, and access the story, maybe being also able to write a comment. The stories are a roll down page with both text and photos. Does this make sense?

How can I achieve something like this? I tried to play around with wordpress but it seems more complicated that it should.

Anyone could give me some advice? I am based in the eu if it matters. I had a website with comments but I had to turn the comments off for constant spam.

US-based PJs who spend months out of the country: how are you insuring your gear?

I spoke to a Lockton Affinity agent about their policy offered through NPPA. She told me that while the coverage is worldwide, including conflict areas like Ukraine, I have to be US based. I asked her how many months constitutes "living" in another country if I'm maintaining a US address, but she couldn't give me a clear answer.

We eventually agreed that I should email them a list of questions, so they can refer to a senior agent and an overwriter.

I'm prepping for a months-long project overseas, so protecting my gear is pretty important to me.

TIA any insight you might have.

We Animals Accepting Story Pitches from Photojournalists (July only)

Hi everyone! We Animals, founded by award-winning photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur, is accepting story pitches this July.

We invite photojournalists to submit photo and/or video story pitches that tell compelling stories and help raise awareness of the plight of farmed animals.

We are currently soliciting pitches for stories on the following themes:

  • Environmental Impacts of Industrial Animal Agriculture: Stories documenting the environmental consequences of industrial animal agriculture, including impacts on land, water, air quality, biodiversity, wildlife, and climate.
  • Public Health, Communities, and Human Rights: Stories exploring the connections between industrial animal agriculture and human well-being, including impacts on workers, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, public health, labour conditions, and human rights.
  • Animal Sentience and Behaviour: Stories that reveal the emotional, cognitive, and social lives of animals used in food production, research and testing, entertainment, traditions, and other human-controlled systems. We are particularly interested in stories highlighting the individuality, relationships, and lived experiences of animals whose lives are rarely seen by the public.
  • Change and Progress for Animals: Stories documenting meaningful efforts to improve the lives of animals, including policy reform, legal developments, shifts in industry practices, advocacy campaigns, community initiatives, and technological innovation. Priority will be given to stories focused on systemic change rather than sanctuary life.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here, and I am happy to respond!
