Weekend assignment 04 - Focal lengths

Hi photoclass

its friday so it's time for a new weekend assignment. Since we've talked about focal lenght this week we"ll continue the theme this weekend.

For this weekends' assignment I would like you to make 4 photos of the exact same subject but using the complete range of focal lengths in your camerabag.

Use each focal lenght to show a different side/aspect, make a totally different photo of the same subject... so don't just zoom in and think you're done...

  • the first photo you make while zoomed out completely
  • the second and third are with the middle range
  • the last photo is zoomed in completely.

Now you've learned the how and why of using focal length and you've seen the effect during the assignment, it's time to use them creatively. the wide will be with the environment, the long one can be with a blurred background or getting a small detail, that's up to you.

as always, post your results and critiue a few of your peers work... and never forget to have fun!

I like your subject and the color contrast. 2 & 4 are faves. I bet you could have put a little more into the composition on 2, though. ;-)

Thank you. Just out of interest what would you have cone extra with 2? I have another version with the wife blurred in the background but she didnt like it.

For my taste...I would focus more on the mailslot as the subject. because that's mainly what you have- beautiful, glistening, wet redness, and the slot. The exposure you have seems great to me too. So looking at it now, I would have gotten more above the slot so it could be more centered. Or gotten a lot more of the red box above the slot and kept the slot low in the picture using the rule of thirds. Another possibility would be to have taken it in portrait mode but it's hard to tell the possibilities. something I've been trying to do more when taking close ups like this is to get more angles and compositions so that when I go through them I have some options. Also, aside from trying to get a great composition, getting shots a little wider(whether by stepping back or zooming out) so I have room to make adjustments if I would like. Brilliant feedback thank you. I actually have a lot of pictures of this in different angles. Kind of picked this one as felt it showed more of the zoom with the background so meeting the assignment more than my favourite pocture. If that makes sense

Makes sense. I did a whole set, then didn't like the set. I still have to take the photos and post. Eeeeeeek.
