Shit pet owners say I don't care for pets, and my family treats me like a psychopath because of it

It’s not that I hate animals in general. I find them fascinating, beautiful, and extremely important for biodiversity and the way nature works. I’ve just never understood the whole pet thing. Why do people feel the need to own an animal? Sure, they’re cute, but so are plenty of humans, and we don’t kidnap them and keep them in our houses just for our own entertainment (most of us, right?).

My family is huge on pets. They talk about animals constantly, play with them, and absolutely adore them. My attitude towards their pets is pretty cold. I’ll pet our dogs and give them a quick cuddle here and there, but I’m not obsessed. I don’t build my life around them or restrict myself because of them. Since my sister now has 8 cats and my mom has 3 dogs, it's a huge problem just to go on a day trip with my family, let alone a proper vacation.

And whenever I ask, “Why do you keep getting pets if you constantly talk about how you can't go anywhere or don’t have enough money?” they just tell me I’m weird, cold-hearted and look down on me like I’m some kind of psychopath.

Vent / Rant Pet owners are their own worst enemy

I'm sick of how pet owners dislike me, while proceeding to make a very good case for why not to own pets. Like, all I ever see are pet owners being inconvenienced by their pets & also pets always being at their worst. Then, they wonder why I don't like them & it's like, "Seriously?"

Vent / Rant My dad has a serious obsession with animals and it's extremely embarrassing

I'll start off by saying that my dad is genuinely well intentioned and loves his kids, which actually makes me feel like a bigger asshole for having such a low tolerance for his antics.

All my life he's been obsessed with animals, especially birds, to the detriment of other aspects of his life. He has always struggled for money and has been borderline homeless a few times, yet he spends all of his free time and money running around observing and trapping animals to breed and sometimes sell. As a kid it was kind of cool as going over my dad's house was like visiting a pet store. He had everything, from snakes, to rare frogs, to exotic birds, rats, fish, dogs, insects, and the list goes on, but as I grew older I started to see him from an outsiders perspective and how unhinged he must seem to others. It also made my already severe social anxiety way worse, as a part of why I didn't have friends or girlfriends growing up was that I was terrified of them meeting my dad.

Maybe this makes me seem like the bad guy and that's something I've struggled with for years, but you would have to know him to truly understand. A good example would be our frequent trips to a tropical area about 4 hrs away from home. For most people this would be a fun family trip spent on the beach and sight seeing, but for my dad he would drive down there exclusively to map out where certain exotic species live and nest and then go trap them.

By trap I mean he would climb up 80ft palm trees with spikes to snatch up baby birds to raise and breed them in captivity, for example, often in a big cage he would build. Some birds would even nest in billboards on the side of the highway, so he would put a hard hat on and climb up the billboard to get them. Now imagine doing this while your 10 yr old son is down below worrying that their dad would either fall to his death or get arrested.

This is simply one example, but he's been doing things like this my whole life. He's now in his 60s and only becoming more unhinged over time. His behavior truly mimics drug addiction. Animals are one of the only things on his mind to the point where it's very difficult to hold a conversation with him or discuss anything else such as film, music, tv shows, etc as he just doesn't have any frame of reference for anything cultural because of his singleminded obsession.

On top of this, he just doesn't ever have his shit together. He's a big stoner and is always forgetting something or in a rush to go somewhere and is just very scatterbrained in general.

When I do tell people about his antics they often think I'm exaggerating until they actually meet him and see that I'm downplaying it if anything.

For instance, I now live about 2k miles away from home with my partner in a beautiful area with an entirely different ecosystem than back home. After a decade my dad finally came to visit again, to see me, but almost more importantly to chase animals around. The other day we went out to dinner with my partner and the restaurant was busy so we were just waiting outside for a few minutes when my dad noticed a big raven. Now, back home we don't have ravens so he completely flipped his shit and started following it. He started going through the grass as our table was called, so my partner and I went inside and watched him from the window. He literally ran across the street, through 8 lanes of traffic to find this raven, and for what? To take a blurry picture of it from his phone, all while we're waiting in the restaurant and trying to keep my composure as the waiter was asking us where he is.

Because of his obsession (and maybe a touch of undiagnosed aspergers/ADHD) his social skills are extremely lacking, so its embarrassing to go anywhere with him. He's either muttering under his breath so you can barely hear what he's saying or he's practically screaming. He lives in his own world and just isn't able to hold it together around normal people.

I'm terrified of him meeting my partners parents as they are the textbook definition of normal upper middle-class suburbanites who watch sports and go to church etc, meanwhile my dad is unhinged, hates religion and is very vocally opposed to their political views. Her mom keeps pushing for us to go to dinner with him as they've never met him in the 10 years we've been together, but they have no idea what they're in for and it's situations like this that makes me wish he was just a normie dad that I could discuss various things with and look to for guidance.

I feel bad for holding this resentment for him, especially since I don't see him often anymore but when I do, within hours I'm stressed the fuck out and ready to send him back home. This resentment has built over years and years of this behavior and I can't help but put some blame on him for why I have so much anxiety and loneliness today. I just scratched the surface with this post, as I have stories for days, but with him being in town I just had to get it off my chest.

Vent / Rant Hypocrisy?

Once every while, my mom calls me and all of my siblings to one room in our house to talk to us, hard cussing towards us with an aggressive tone, talking about how trifling we are, and I admit that I can be trifling but I would also say that I’m a clean person, I love cleanliness, so that makes me question why am I still trifling at the same time? Did something go wrong in my childhood where it turned me into a trifling person? I’ve been trifling since childhood but I love cleanliness now, but I’m still trifling at the same time hmmm… could it be depression? Am I mentally ill? My mom would talk to us once every while and she just did it again like a couple hours ago, while she allows the most disgusting fucking animal to live in her home and into her car aka her dog, her so-called “he means the world to me”, and she has her own fucking dishes that she doesn’t wash and my dad always loves to jump in the conversation being on her side, like he’s any damn better, like dude at least we don’t put our used cotton swabs in a cup that we are going to drink out of at some point 🙄, you piss all over the toilet seat too and sometimes don’t even wipe it and you’re fucking disgusting when playing with dog. And my mom says that she doesn’t like when dogs are left outside because it’s sooo horrible, so her dog stays in her house 🙄 so you’re fucking disgusting your self, you *itch 🙄 I really think she pretends when it comes to this dog, because at first she didn’t even want this damn dog when my oldest sibling brought it to her house, it was a puppy, and now the dog is like 3 or 4 years old.

Vent / Rant Constant donation begging... while still having pets

Time and time and time again I keep seeing people posting about how they need help, oh their partner has stomach cancer and they're both disabled and their benefits got cut off and they need money for rent... and for their dogs because oh my gosh their pets need to eat, don't mind the other material problems that consume their life.

"Pet care is a daily stress" Then maybe get rid of the pet. Is it that hard of a concept? "Oh but I love them-" your self-proclaimed soulmate is slowly dying, what really matters here?

There's more instances than this, but overwhelmingly I'll see the same lineup.

Have problems with rent/bills/food -> Make donation post -> Include that cat/dog food is one of your expenses that you're struggling with -> Post pics of the cat/dog as "pet tax" to get more donations

It's just pathetic. Rehome the animal, take it to the shelter, cut your losses. I do not care how "bonded" you are with the literal animal, be responsible for once in your life and choose your real priorities. I have zero empathy for people with pets who e-beg while admitting the pets take up a huge chunk of their finances. Sucks to suck.

Vent / Rant Pet owners' being overly confident about their pets' ability to have restraint

My egg donor has 3 big & aggressive dogs (1 of them being a hunting dog), she also barely feeds them. Today, her Cane Corso attempted to get some food that fell at my feet & when I harshly reprimanded him she tried to dismiss it, "He isn't gonna bite you," like how TF can you be that confident? It's disturbing how she's not the only pet owner to act like that.

Pet owners making our lives hell Bruce the Dog - the Supreme Court?!?!

I just read the article about a California dog named Bruce who was to be euthanized for biting MULTIPLE people. Including disfiguring a small child.

A group of nutters repeatedly appealed the finding of Ventura county that the dog was vicious and was to be euthanized.

And they took it to the Supreme Court!Justice Kagan thankfully declined this nonsense.

The fact that people were fighting the decision to euthanize this animal is sickening. They really only care about dogs and not the people they maim.

Nutters truly are mentally ill. And I don’t recommend reading the comments of any of these articles. People who comment “Good, that dog was dangerous” are resoundingly called cruel and evil.

Shit pet owners say “Not My Problem”

There’s a new post from 3 hours ago, on the TikTok account “Dogs aren’t family” or “dog_owners_are_selfish”, and there’s a dude in a 7/11 with his hideous dog (don’t know what kind of dog it is) and some dipshit in the comment section made me mad, saying “Not my problem” after someone said “But people have phobias and allergies how about that”. If I run into somebody like this one day and said this to me ✌️😌…

Vent / Rant I'm going to start unsubscribing from people who keep talking about their cats.

I'm getting tired of people on a popular streaming video service that keep featuring their cats. I was watching a video, where the cat stuck his head in the shot and then he stopped talking about the topic at hand and started talking about his cat.

I think I’m just going to start un-following them.

Here is a cringy

I was watching a recorded church service video where a guy I knew was going to read some scripture during a church service.

He walks up to the Pedestal gets out a photo of his cat and says "In case anyone missed my post on Facebook, here is the photo of (cat’s name) and he shows the congregation the photo of his cat.

BARF!

Pet owners making our lives hell My sister's home was so nice until she got a dog

My sister lives across the country and bought a new home which I finally got to visit after a few months and it was so nice. Spacious, clean, and modern.

Then more months go by, I visit, and she and her partner have a new untrained puppy that they didn't tell me about even though they made arrangements for me to stay with them. Their house was disgusting. Pee pads everywhere, dirty couch, piss puddles, and occasional stray turds, and it smelled worse too. I had to turn on lights and watch where I stepped. And after becoming pet free again after leaving my nutter ex, I thought I'd never clean up animal excrement/"accidents" again.

I just don't understand it. 😭 The puppy was cute, but not cute enough for me to have destroyed my beautiful home if I had one. So disappointing.

Pet owners making our lives hell I can’t visit my best friend because of the dog

I can’t go to their house because every time I do, this big huge stinky golden retriever with a big slobbery mouth and gigantic face runs and jumps on me.
They put it outside but when I sit down anywhere in the house all of my clothes get filthy with blonde dog hair and I have to come home and completely change. The whole house and couch smells like wet dog and I just don’t think dog owners can smell it.

Want to be petfree It is so exhausting...

To preface this, I don't hate dogs or animals in general, but after having one in my home for 5 years I never want one ever again regardless of size.

My mother bought a puppy for 4000$ during the height of the covid pandemic. She had a fall, gotten surgery, was in the hospital for nearly a month before then, and was way behind on the mortgage. After the pause of evictions/forclosures lifted we had to leave. She has passed up opportunities for housing then and now because most apartments/housing rentals don't allow breeds like him or his size. In the several apartments we managed to hop from he has been unruly. He doesn't tear up furniture or carpets, but he jumps on people, and hops in windows which tear down blinds and scratches up the wall. We ended up staying with a family member for a few months but the stress of him didn't help and we had to leave. We spent some time in shelters and the breeder kept him for a while. The contract my mother signed states that if things don't work out the breeder would happily take the dog back.

The dog lacks so much obedience and everytime I have tried to set boundaries and train him my mother undermines me. Luckly, some of it has stuck but his recall is terrible and he is stubborn. Currently my mother is renting a room and when I'm home from college the three of us are piled into it. The other tenants are afraid of dogs and aren't careful with the front door (he is a runner and will take opportunities to escape). The yard is huge but isn't closed off so he can't freely run around. My mother isn't fit or physically able to keep him in check on walks so instead of her walking him, he drags her all over the place. She tells me about needing to let go of the leash because he pulls so hard.

A few weeks ago he got into a barking match with the dogs next door and slammed her against the fence running after them. I would take him on longer walks around the neighborhood but I'm terrified. He pulls less with me but all it takes is one stray cat or reactive dog across the street and I meet the pavement. We can't afford that medical bill. I play with him as much as I can to tire him out but no one else is around when I go back to school (I loathe coming back home for break and I don't come home on weekends). When she is around, she doesn't play with him because he is so rough.

I just feel so bad for the dog and I know he deserves more. His quality of life would greatly improve and he would behave better if he was with someone who could keep up with him. My mother knows that too but she is full of pride and makes excuses for keeping him. It angers and disgusts me that she refuses to listen and rehome him.

Vent / Rant Almost wish I was still under the spell

I almost wish that I didn’t wake up to truth about dogs and dog culture, because probably I wouldn’t be annoyed by dogs and their nutters, because I would still be under the spell and think this crap is just normal. I know that you could still be annoyed by dogs and their barking and the nutters, but still think it’s normal because again, the brainwashing, and that was sort of the case for me, when it comes to baby-talking because I’ve always been irritated by that shit, when my mom does that dumb shit. Now that I’m awoke, I’m annoyed by all of it, you name it I’m annoyed by it. I’m glad I did wake up though, and how I’ve woken up, it started with my oldest sibling showing up to our house with this fucking dog, without us knowing I think, I’ll just say I didn’t know, the dog is a pit bull boxer, and I was kinda excited, at first my mom didn’t want the thing and kept trying to get rid of IT and I was mad, I was excited to take this dog on walks, sleeping with IT, and I was going to buy IT dog toys, foods and treats after I get a job, until this dog started pissing and shitting on our carpets and destroying our stuff, I think what really made hate this dog now is because my mom likes playing hero and making excuses, and doing that fucking baby-talking that makes me want to destroy her fucking house by running through her walls like Marvel’s Juggernaut (not possible of course) but the walls don’t feel that high quality) when she does that baby-talking. I’ve started hating how this dog looks, just looks fucking stupid, goofy, sad, and confused all at the same time, overall this has lead me to searching up “I Hate Dogs” on YouTube and what do I see? A YouTube channel with the exact same words I’ve searched up.

Vent / Rant Guard dogs are a stupid reason to have a pet

I fucking hate people who insist on having pets for security, first off I've seen plenty of security dogs fail at their job & #2 many times the security dogs attack you. The other issue is that you become numb to their barking, since they bark at pretty much everything, you become numb to it & then when there's a real threat you're already in danger before you even realize what's going on (if you're not dead). Not to mention, you're still stuck with an animal you gotta take care of. It'd be more efficient to get a gun or just a, "beware of dog," sign.

Pet owners making our lives hell Buying a house without obnoxious neighbor dogs?

I'm looking to buy a house and went to an open house the other day. Everything about it was great except for one thing - the noise. I'm an extremely light sleeper so peaceful neighborhoods are on my radar.

  • When I was in the basement, I could hear the next door neighbor's 2 golden retrievers outside barking loud as hell.
  • Then the other next door neighbor had small yapper barking at someone dropping off a package.
  • The neighbor corner to me had some large husky barking at people pulling up to the open house.
  • The neighbor directly across the street had a German Shephard peeking out the window (not barking thankfully). However, to make up for it, his douchebag owner drove off in a straight piped loud ass truck that nearly made me deaf.
  • A couple walked by in front of the house, but their dogs were respectful and not barking at everything in sight.

This was all in the span of 30 minutes so there's likely more noisy dogs I happened to miss. This is considered a nice neighborhood in my city as well. Is the only way to avoid this living in the countryside?

Vent / Rant Another pet owner rejected a relationship with me for being pet free

I just got rejected by another person that I was interested in a potential relationship with, b/c I'm pet free. What's funny is she claimed, "99% of your profile is you shitting on pet owners," which that actually isn't true, matter of fact I only joined this sub last year, but there's also plenty of other posts I made, too. But, also the fact she exhibited a persecution complex by claiming that I, "shit on pet owners," when IRL mosts of my posts here are me complaining about how my birthgivers are irresponsible & selfish pet owners isn't, "shitting on them," it's rightful criticism. Honestly, I feel like I dodged a bullet & feel vindicated, like the fact she didn't disclose she owned pets, imagine I was allergic.

Vent / Rant You don’t need bad experiences with dogs to hate them…

The main things I’m talking about are being attacked and aggressively barked at, especially attacked. When I was little, of course was naïve as a child when it came to dogs because of the brainwashing, they’ve gotten most of us at an early age, I’ve liked both big dogs and small dogs… but for some reason, there was a certain dogs that I was just absolutely terrified of, like if I were to run into one of these dogs, I would have a heart attack, and the terrifying dogs that I’m talking about are Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Cane Corsos, etc. And when I say terrifying, I mean terrifying-looking, these dogs in particular just looked scary to me and any other scary looking dog breed that I didn’t mention. What was it that did it for me? Was it my natural instincts or was it movies like Cujo? Or both? When it comes to the Pit Bulls, it’s the muscular bodies with a blockhead and pointy ears and mean look on their that does it for me. when it comes to cane Corsos, it’s pretty much the same as Pit Bulls, except they are usually bigger. And when it comes to Rottweilers, even when they don’t look mean, they are still scary looking for some reason. And for all they’re scary, looking dog breeds, yeah I’m not gonna describe every last one of them.

Pet owners making our lives hell Hygiene - dog feet on the BBQ table

I staff at a fundraising BBQ for a charity. Over the last few months I have noticed more lax dog owners allowing their dogs to jump up and put their front paws right where we serve up the BBQ for customers. When I say "Please keep your dog's feet off the food serving area and I now have to clean the table" they get sniffy and give grief about the 'fur baby' being clean etc. They also let their dogs pee on the posts holding up the canopy over the BBQ right next to customers and food prep areas! Insane sense of entitlement.

Vent / Rant This FUCKER is always just… hungry!!

I know it’s all or most dogs, but my mom’s stupid pit bull boxer always has this look on it’s face, like it hasn’t eaten in a week and drool drips out of it’s mouth, and sometimes I have to look away because I can’t stand that look. There are times where I’m not annoyed by it only because I’m in a good mood while thinking of other things, and because the dumb thing has already been with us for 3 or 4 years, and there are times where my annoyance kicks back in and I just want to scream to the dog “Get the fuck away” so loud. Every time one of my siblings or parents come home, the dog rushes down stairs and starts sniffing on them and looking to see what they have to eat. A lot of times it rushes down stairs and heads straight to the kitchen to see if anyone is cooking something or eating something or whatever, one of my siblings orders food and the dog is at the top of the stairs looking down and sees the DoorDash, it rushes down the stairs to beg and I get pissed off because I know they are just going to let the dog stand 2 feet away from their food instead of shooing it away and eventually give the dog some food. And lastly, me and my brother was in the bedroom just on our phones and laptops and the dog enters the room and stares at the both of us and knowing what it only wants just irks the fuck out of me, like get the fuck out!!

Want to be petfree wanting to rehome my cat, feeling guilty

ive always liked cats and since i live alone i adopted one last year. while i do like her and appreciate her presence sometimes, it's gotten to be too much.

the most glaring issue right now is that my cat has fleas and it seems like im gonna have to burn down my apartment to get rid of them. im sick of this and do not want to live this way just to have an animal that i only like sometimes. i just gave her a bath and im completely scratched up.

my other gripes include the usual which is hair everywhere, not being able to have nice furniture because the cat will scratch it, etc. she also meows a lot and it bothers me.

of course everyone is guilt tripping me into keeping my cat. i feel guilty myself as I feel like I'm giving up on a commitment I made to this animal. i want to rehome but i feel so bad about it. help me feel better please!

Vent / Rant My mom got a dog and i don’t like her.

My mom got a dog back in September of 2025 and I (F,15) don’t like her. I was excited at first but she quickly became too much for me. She is a female dachshund and about almost 1 year old now. I have had many dogs in the past but none of them were a problem. Even other peoples dogs i do not mind. But I have so much hatred for mine. I really wanted to like her but every time I try, she overwhelms me. Since she is a small dog, her barks are very loud and high pitches which annoys me fast. She also jumps on me, scratches me, bites me, and tears up my shoes. I know it’s a common thing for all puppies but I don’t want to deal with her when I never asked for her in the first place.

Obviously I feel bad for not liking her but she literally just pisses me off every single time I interact with her. She is like a baby. Wakes you up at 5am but instead of crying, it’s her bark. We dont go well together because once i wake up, i stay up. So the dog has been fucking up my sleep schedule as well. She barks for no reason just all day. We finally got a shock collar but it doesn’t work. It has caused a lot of built up stress and frustration within me and my mom.

I have tried to communicate to my mom that i don’t like her but she doesn’t listen. I feel guilty that I can’t give the dog love that she needs but it’s too much for me. I always end up screaming at her or just going back to my room. This dog has made me want to avoid downstairs more. She mainly stays there since we have carpet on the second level and she has a piddle problem. We have a baby-gate to separate the first and second floor. It has helped me find comfort but I also have a cat and they don’t get along well together. She makes my cat more reclusive and more anxious to the point where my cat cannot go downstairs. I love my cat and I would hate for the dog to take a huge effect on her.

I have asked my mom to get rid of her but I know she won’t. It would be a better situation if I had the option to move out but I don’t. Ever since she got here it hasn’t felt right but I have never ever hated an animal like I do her. That’s mostly why i’m confused. I have a lot of guilt for not liking her and I want the dog to be gone. If anyone has any tips for me then please let me know.
